2017 BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition Plug-In-Hybrid Review

- The BMW i8 is a surprisingly normal car to drive. You know you are getting into an exotic car as you walk towards it and open those scissor doors. But once you are inside, everything about this car is relatively simple, easy and quite intuitive to use. With a little bit of agility, this could easily be used as a daily driver, especially because of its all-wheel-drive capability. If you don’t want to fuss with the car at all, just put it in drive and off you go. The car takes care of determining if you are in electric, gas plus electric, or gas only mode if you have run out of battery charge. If you feel like participating in the driving experience, you can move the shifter to the left, engage sport mode and start paddling your way up and down through the 6-speed transmission. And with this car’s surprisingly boisterous sounding gasoline engine, the exhaust note is very rewarding as you generate very sporty sounding upshifts and downshifts.

Correction 9 second to 0-100 km/h in all electric mode. 3.8s in sport mode. Fantastic car. Mileage of a Prius performance of a new corvette stingray.

the i8 doesn't have the combo/dc charging option. i'd like to see the i8 with an exposed inline 6 and a maximum power electric motor. remove the bucket seats and cutdown on the carbon fiber as you exit/enter the vehicle.

I love the BMW i8. I want one, but I don't have anyplace to charge it. Can I drive it on gas only without ever charging it?
Chuck Frye yeah but sport mode wouldn't be as fast. I've done this before and the speed/performance was whack. comfort mode won't be available.

It is a bit of a workout but it was worth it! It was a really fun car to drive.

Could it be possible to use this hybrid car with only 3 cylinder engine? i mean the engine independently itself without using the battery or the battery has 5% charged/low battery - 0% charged??

that robust sound is just the speaker system... its a feature..... externally and internally **edit** not JUST... but its definitely a huge part of what you are in fact hearing...

138,000 is the base price of the regular r8 v10. the v10 plus starts at 194,000. Also the Lambhorghini Huracan starts at 199,800. You got your other car facts wrong. Just trying to clarify not hate.

The EV range just plain sucks.. not even worth the cost of this car. Go with a Tesla over this. Why even bother making a plugin option for it. I personally went with the Volt with ACC.

Jeff Kovacs sadly yes. I bought this car for my bday and had some regrets... many said that's the worst car you can buy for $150k but there's something about the i8 that's special.
Ciel Rosario how about parking in complexes, side by side with other cars are you able to get out of the car?... Sorry if this qn sound stupid, just wondering....
its pretty easy to get out in close spaces the doors don't take that much space
hyong 1991 it's easy to get out. ppl exaggerate getting out because of how the doors are angled. When the doors go up, there a much larger distance from cars next than you, than regular car doors.
Still 1 on my street, nothing like it in the world.
Waste of $$$$$!
