  • For the first in the series, I thought I'd stick in Harper and Sharpe's introduction.
For those of you familiar with the Sharpe series, I thought it was high time Sergeant. (Later RSM) Patrick Harper deserved his own set of clips...
For those unfamiliar with said series, Sergeant Harper (played brilliantly by Daragh O'Malley in the films) is the epitome of the right-hand man - to Richard Sharpe, from his beginnings as a Lieutenant to his career Lieutenant-Colonel and beyond... Harper also gets the best one-liners.
To access the biggest Sharpe group on Facebook, "Sharpe's Rifles", use this link: www.facebook.co...

When Sharpe and co. return in the scene which started at 3:00 and Harper is sat there with his gun in his lap, the hat on his head and a grin on his face .... ah, it made me grin.

Given the accuracy (more properly, lack of accuracy) of a musket, the first trooper was not risking a lot. Unfortunately, Harper had a Baker Rifle.

    • @koreancowboy42
      @koreancowboy42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Muskets are still good at close range. It's why sometimes, some armies back then risked alot by having their front lines push forward as close as they can so when the enemy is firing while they marched and still reloading. The soldiers within a certain range they can return fire.
The patriot movie done a good job at it. When the colonial forces shot when the British were still marching forward and then returned fire which caused more death on the colonial side.

Those are Baker Rifles. They could put a musketball stout glass diameter hole out to 200 yards. So in reality, both would have been in serious danger unless Harper couldn’t reload fast enough.

@@willdenoble1898 Harper could have taken the Man in Black too if he hadn't lost his ramrod taking out the second guy and had to tap-load his rifle.

The humour in the book is what makes it so awesome :) I do love the bit where Harper saves him even though Sharpe's yelling 'NO'...
'No? 'The Bastard was going to fillit you!'
'It's all right, I just didn't want a hole in his overalls''

Soldiers have a unique sense of humour, whatever the period in which they're fighting, but Sharpe and Harper are an even more unique double act. Read any of the Sharpe novels or watch any of the films and there are other scenes with that earthy sense of humour. Priceless :)

4:20 was tne part where I realized this show can't be taken seriously. It made no sense that a man willing to start a fistfight with his commanding officer and who is on his way to executed for it would show so much loyalty to the crown, nor does it make sense he could reload a musket so fast no matter how many short cuts he took in the process. I doesn't even show him pouring powder into the breech, which is a necessary step.

If you read the novel Sharpe's Rifles there's an exchange between Sharpe and Harper aboot England and Ireland and why they were put side by side and I swear you'll be laughin' till the tears are running down your ankles. I finished it last night and when I came to that two-hander I was laughin for aboot half an hour before I could get back to reading it.Would have been great in the film.

A soldier and a Marine were walking through the woods one day when they came upon a bear. The soldier immediately sat down, pulled a pair of running shoes out of his rucksack, and began to put them on. The Marine said "Are you crazy? You know you can't outrun a bear".
The soldier said "The way I see it I only have to outrun you".

I thought I might add to this, 8 years after the last post? Every hero needs a side-kick that is even harder than the protagonist? Not trying to 'big myself up' but me and John, holy fuck, better avoided than look to fight us. It was just a fact.
No word of a lie, we were at a party and I was doing very well for myself but John seemed to be getting belligerent, like a true friend, I got us both out of there before it all 'kicked off', if anybody even touched John it'I would have been war, especially as John could bring a war all by himself. Abs no bs, when we we were leaving the party, just to see if I could still kick above my head. I kicked a sign, not for any bad reasons, just to see if I could? Well, John caught the sign and crushed it between his mighty paws. There are movies where people mess with Batman, but you definitely don't mess with John! This is the same guy who literally ko'd two 'serious players' in the time it took him to throw two punches, left and right, bang bang end of discussion. If anybody could 'channel' Harper, it would be John.
    Pax vobis.

I never get the logic to the 2 cavalry v Harper. "One of you will die", well then I'm buggering well not going to be the first to charge him!
Why would you make yourself the first person to charge him, you're pretty much guaranteeing he'll shoot you!
Ok, so Harper is so epic it didn't matter who went first, but... ;)
