    Very good questions. If I had to guess why they we don't have synchromesh transmissions here is mainly because most drivers don't want to have to use the clutch to shift.
    It is harder to power shift a car simply because of the synchros. The synchros are trying to slow the gear down to match the road speed, which when shifting a big truck transmission you would accomplish by either double clutching, or waiting between shifts when floating. This is also why it's harder on a synchro transmission.

  • @midnightpassion43
    @midnightpassion43 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    @ Blake, double clutching now is for those that have not taken their CDL test. Off course it's fine to float gears once you have passed your road test. But in some states, I think it is mandatory to double clutch when taking the road test.

      In Minnesota, If you cost at all you will fail on the spot. they teach you that you should always keep in in gear in case you get into an accident so the transmission will help slow you down.

  • @ChaplainC

    I am not sure if you are joking or not, but in case you are serious...
    Big rigs have significantly different transmissions and clutches in them. They do not have syncros in them, ergo the gears do not line up on their own. SO to line them up you have to double clutch. The other choice is to shift slowly and with good timing. You pull it out of gear, wait for the desired gear to line up,& slide it in. It is easy once you learn. Can do it in a car too, if you wanted. Syncros = easier to shift:)

    Flick the splitter (switch on knob) up then put back into "1st" to get into 6th. It's essentially two 5spd transmissions. Don't use splitter in neutral. Splitter up while in 5th before you enter neutral to shift to 6th.

    It's a straight truck with no trailer towing capabilities (ie. no 5th wheel). My guess is it was made from factory to be a garbage truck, a local dump truck or maybe an in city delivery truck. I drove one but it was a 6 speed International.

  • @needmorediesel
    @needmorediesel 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    People use the clutch in cars because they are synchronized transmissions in cars. In American big trucks the transmissions are not synchronized, and they also have straight cut gears. (Cars have helical cut gears) Much easier and faster to shift without the clutch. Big truck clutches are also solid disc clutches. They're not meant to be slipped much at all. Again, another reason to shift without the clutch. That and double clutching will wear out your leg in no time.

    To understand the reason truck mfg's don't use synchro's you need 2 understand exactly what syncr's do. They work like a brake does, in a downshift they work opposite. They use brass rings that can and do wear out over time. with the amount of mass and torque that go thru a semi trans they would wear out real fast. To shift a trans without syncro's you have to have clutch out (or engaged) in neutral so as engine speed changes so does the input shaft of the trans.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.
    @HelloKittyFanMan. 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another thing that's interesting is this whole thing about helical vs. straight-on gears. Well, the reason that consumer vehicles have helical gears is to reduce noise, right? Okay, well why don't they do that in these big trucks too? But even then, what does the tooth cut have to do with how easy they are to shift, when you aren't actually meshing the teeth during shifting anyway--but just meshing dog-tooth rings?

  • @john587ful
    @john587ful 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually man i am a truck driver, most drivers don't use the clutch for the simple fact that the Eaton Fuller transmission isn't supposed to be clutched, the only reason for most drivers using the clutch is starting, stopping, and the free travel in the clutch to shut the jake brake on and off instead of flipping the switch. It isn't recommended that u use the clutch because that is actual wear on the clutch bearing and springs and the clutch itself, and it can wear your tranny out in a hurry.

  • @needmorediesel
    @needmorediesel 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the force on the driveline is not broken by the clutch being disengaged, the synchros encounter an extreme amount of wear and once synchros wear out, it makes it very difficult to shift, and could make it pop out of gear, etc.

    • @Leprechaun_of_Maryland
      @Leprechaun_of_Maryland ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude😂 there's no synchros in that transmission. That's why dumptrucks and semis have a clutch brake. The only ones that have synchronizers in it are what we call a "straight six," which is a 6-speed transmission like you'd find in a car. I didn't even know those existed until I came to work for the state. Other than that, no other transmission with a higher gear count has synchronizers in it

  • @blackXSpr
    @blackXSpr 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Newer trucks are fine to clutchless shift. The truckers I know are all driving older trucks they are renting out, and they need to use the clutch because syncros back then are not what syncros are today. Since most truckers on the road are driving older style trucks, its fair to say most use the clutch. Im not saying everyone does, but its largely a myth that ALL truckers do clutchless shifting. Thats really what I was trying to say.

    And why wouldn't big truck clutches be made to slip much, even though that's the point of a clutch, and especially when most of your slipping is done during start-off anyway (since during shifting, the clutch is engaged more quickly than during take-off)?
    How is it supposedly "much easier and faster" to shift without using the clutch in one of these big trucks than with double-clutching, if it looks like double-clutching enables you not to have to figure out your rev matching?

    And why *aren't* big truck transmissions made to be synchronized?
    And why is it supposedly *harder* to power-shift a consumer vehicle (though still possible, and not always terribly difficult) just because it has the synchronizers than I hear that it is in a big truck (which seems counter-intuitive; on first thought, ya'd think the synchros would make that easier)?
    And why do they say that not only is it harder to do in a consumer vehicle, but harder *on* the consumer vehicle (to power-shift)?

    It looks like this driver is using the clutch each time he shifts. I have four questions. 1) Does the driver have to push the clutch in order to start the truck? 2)Isn't it bad to use the clutch each time the driver shifts gears? 3) Isn't it best to shift according to RPM? Will the weight of the trailer cause a truck with an automatic transmission to snap out of gear? This is what I have always heard. And 4) Are big rigs with automatic transmissions reliable and durable? Thanks....

    • @caasiwms
      @caasiwms 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrPhil0267 1) yes, unless the clutch safety switch has been removed. 2) no, not bad, just not the most convenient for the driver. No ill effect on the truck. 3) with an unsychronized transmission, you have no choice but to "shift according to RPM". It doesn't matter if you are floating gears or double clutching, it will not go into gear unless you rev match rpms. 4) i think most drivers would argue that standards transmissions are preferred for their control/usability. You have much greater control over the drivetrain with a standard. But automatics are much simpler to operate (boring in my opinion lol). As far as durability/reliability, I would say most truckers also argue standards are more durable/reliable, but automatics aren't necessarily "weak". Most well maintained autos will last almost as long as a standard.
      Hope this helps

    well I do both, I won't use the clutch on high side. once I flip down to low I have trouble getting my timing right so I clutch. I drive an 18 speed mack and a 13 speed mack. both trucks run great with good tranny. I just need to work on it I guess, only been driving 4 months. any ideas on better floating on low side?

    Im currently going through tractor trailer school and my worst part is downshifting when getting off the freeway at exit ramps. And at times downshifting to 4th gear when approaching a red light. How long does it normally take to get used to shifting a 10 speed?

    So you can return the splitter to "Lo" while in neutral while coasting without any damage? Also, when is double clutching recommended/preferred over just floating the gears with no clutch?

    • @KingofComputing
      @KingofComputing 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're just pre-selecting the gear when you're in neutral, it's not until you press the clutch and go into gear that you actually go into the low half

    • @gonenomad5266
      @gonenomad5266 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evan Berwick You really only have to use the clutch when starting and stopping, now if you want to have your ankle/foot in pain all the time then yes you can clutch anytime you want to. There is really no limit on when and where you can use clutch to shift.

  • @eroc1970

    most drivers dont use the clutch if you have a reasonably old one youll never be able to get it in gear if you touch the clutch

      In your bloody dreams, a driver knows when to shift by the tone of the engine the slope how well the vehicle is moving and that requires experience , NOT some Dopey phone App

    • @apptech2327
      @apptech2327 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mozzmann The app is for new truck drivers, not for the experienced ones.

    • @mozzmann
      @mozzmann 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apptech 23 Again I reiterate that NO app is going to help where an experienced trainer is far superior at imparting knowledge. IMHO some app is going to simply make more problems for operator's when we really need a global data base of experienced retired operator's who want to pass on their knowledge and experience. THAT is how your going to save Lives and Fuel and make the transport industry more efficient and safe.

    Well, by "use the clutch in cars," I guess you really mean "use the clutch to shift in consumer vehicles," right?
    Well, that's interesting, because it looked like double-clutching this truck makes it just about as automatic a "let-in" as single-clutching a consumer vehicle is. Does it (other than making ya tired sooner)?

      It's not an "emergency air supply" it's for the spring brakes, when you pull it, it actually releases air and applies the spring brakes, its designed for parking, not an emergency brake. And yes this is a straight truck.

    • @userfriendly1981
      @userfriendly1981 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Non-synchro transmission have to be driven double clutching...You can work with only one clutch (out the stick on fuel realease and in with clutch) ou without clutch... In fact on a non-synchro transmission the clutch is only for starting and secure de transmission...You do the synchronisation... Not like the synchro transmission on a car... But down shifting is a little more challenging cause you must know the rpm when you leaving and the rpm when you put it in...Everything that mak normal car annoying to drive

    • @1983dashit
      @1983dashit 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's better to double clutch for the sake of the engine, and trucks are different just in the fact that everything is up against a mack, one of the weirdest ones to shift due to the rpms.

    • @theutherknight017
      @theutherknight017 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you don't have to double clutch, although the manufacture recommends that you do. You can float them if your road speed and engine rpms match. If it goes into gear without you feeling and hearing any grinding you are doing it correctly.
