Lots of lovely ideas, this is so useful. I know lots of people who are the home food providers that say thinking what to make for meals is often the hardest part.

I love your post - so inspirational for me. I am really proud of me and my family - we did not over bought, over cooked or throw anything away. Leftovers can be so yummy as it is or totally re- invented. ❤

Hello Jane, this was so thorough and really helpful, thank you! I have 3 kids and my husband, I am cooking a new meal almost every day and we eat leftovers as sides- but it's exhausting! I love your tip about cooking double or extra on Sunday and not having to cook on Monday! That went down in my notebook. Happy New Year to you and Mike!

I like the idea of having enough on hand for meals for days ahead. It's reassuring to know that you're not just about to run out of something you may need. I try to shop the sales on things that I use a lot and stock up on them when there's a sale. Then I watch for the next sale on other items I use a lot. This way, I'm not often down to my last of anything and I saved money by shopping the sales. 😺

This was my missing link in how to meal plan, and now that I’ve seen it I’m asking myself how I could’ve not known. Inventory, list, prioritize and then plan the menus. Super! Thanks, and have a happy New Year!

No waste is good. I put together a quick meal for myself. Had some marinated beets. Added some leftover Brussels Sprouts to my pasta/leftover lamb stew (mainly carrots & broth). That cleaned my fridge of leftovers.

I was interested in your comment about red wine being kept in the fridge Jane, because it was a French wine expert who told me that there is so much nonsense spoken about red wine and room temperature. And that's because when people first decided wine tasted better at room temperature, the average temperature of a largish stone built home (and moreso a chateau), was barely above freezing in winter, unless you were practically sitting on top of an open fire. And of course it will keep better in a fridge and brought up to temperature before drinking, so nothing whatever wrong with that. For the food plan, excellent variety of dishes, and snap, I have both cherry compote and crumpets to use up, so excellent suggestions for those. Many thanks!

Super helpful to describe the goal, then show the process of compartmentalizing the frig then freezer lists to show which perishes first. Showing the written meal plan was helpful as I'm not flexible in my thinking. It helped me to see that your plans worked because you eat two meals (me too) per day which helped me overcome the feeling that my meal planning never looks like other people's and is therefore deficient. It reminded me that everyone is truly different and that's OK. Thank you.

I went through the fridge & freezer a few days ago and put together a 'Christmas Dinner soup' - there were the bitty bits of the turkey, bacon, some leftover stuffing, sausage meat, a couple of roasties & some maple basted parsnips, along with some ham stock from a previous ham hock meal, seasoning & the rest of the sourdough from boxing day - it was one of the nicest soups I've made this year - happy New Year to you both and the pooches

Great ideas. I try to eat somewhat seasonally - winter foods vs summer foods. I just finished inventory of freezer meats and made a list of what needs to be used in Jan and Feb. Keep basics alwzys but will need to buy dairy and some fresh fruits to supplement. As I age this is much simpler. I can pretty much shop local store once a month and Costco in city every quarter. Blessings in 2024.

I have always been frugal and waste conscious buying 'yellow label goods and freezing immediately..'.live alone now as 5 kids have flown but can't get into habit of cooking for 1 so still cook for 6 but portion and freeze for later to the extent had to get extra freezer!!! Always make a batch of ragu from Tom's and peppers even mushroom stalks and freeze in mini pots will continue to watch ; thankyou

Drizzle your potatoes with oil, then bake for a few minutes. Cover then flash-freeze your chips on a baking tray, flat and not touching, for a few hours. When frozen solid they're ready to be tipped into a freezer bag and kept until you need them. Blanching the potatoes would make your chips soggy.
