      Yes, Jacob got punished for his deception. He was punished by being given a father in law, who repeatedly deceived Jacob. Jacob fell victim to the same sin that that he committed. Jacob's cowardice & lack of faith were also required to be confronted by him, when he returned to face his brother Esau. Jacob had to have faith that God would provide him with the future his inheritance would have been given to him for, & believe that God would not allow his brother to spoil God's plan, by killing Jacob.

      Joseph being sold into slavery was definitely not ambiguous. It created strife in Abraham's family. Abraham suspected his son's of murdering Joseph, which had been their first plan. Abraham lived fearing that his son's might also kill his son Benjamin, because they saw how he loved him as well. The possibility of trust being part of their household, had been destroyed. Their betrayal was clearly shown as wrong & evil. Joshua's rising through the ranks was in spite of their betrayal, not because of it. Without God gifting Joshua with deciphering dreams, he would have spent his life in prison.

      I used to be a religious Jew, so I can provide a bit of context.
      One of the things that I like about Judaism is its emphasis on personal interpretation. Whereas Christianity focuses a lot on finding the "true" meaning of the texts, the idea of the Torah is that it can be read and understood in different ways by different people. While a rabbi may view it from a more scholarly perspective, there are plenty of times in Jewish texts where respected rabbis learn from humble farmers who were able to read something differently, and most modern synagogues put emphasis on discussion among everyone, no matter the level of formal Jewish education. The exceptions are extremely clear sentences such as "don't eat pigs." There's not a lot of interpretation there.
      A Jewish person will never question another's faith or say that they're interpreting something incorrectly, since that's not really a thing. While that can be great (and is why religious Jews tend to be more progressive than religious Christians), it also means that people like Abby often feel safer hiding behind Judaism as they spew their bigotry, because no one can say that they're wrong.

      @@coda821, stop talking about the Bible as if it's perfect, because here's Jesus' prophecy in Isaiah chapter 7 verses 14-25.
      'Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
      Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
      For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
      The Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
      And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
      And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.
      In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
      And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;
      And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
      And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
      With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.
      And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.'
      Sure does sound like him... I'm honestly losing my patience with you people, because you've got no clue what your own book says, plus, it's been used to support a whole list of shit that you might even disagree with, such as slavery, unequal rights for women, etc. I've seen my own nan talk about how boys were able to do what they wanted, but women were not, she hasn't got a clue that her own religion played a part in it...
      What's sad is that she agrees that women should be stay-at-home mums and that that's all she wanted to be and that she's got no clue why women would wanna go against what God had made for them by being focused on career, etc, she also thinks that being gay or trans isn't natural and that it's the chemicals in the food and water that's got their brains messed up and that being gay or trans shouldn't be legal, because it goes against the Bible.
      Sure, the Bible was also used to support equal rights for women and slaves, but a holy book that can be used to support both positions is not a holy book, it's just a book, that's all there is to be said about it.

    “She puts Christian before Jew in her language”. I can speak on this too! Part of this has to do with the overlap of Christianity and conservative politics in the US. The second part is that a lot of US Jewish people have unintentionally absorbed Christian values and Christian ideas of God and Heaven through cultural osmosis. We’re a religious minority and some assimilation has already happened. Also, we’re used to deferring to Christian Americans to make them feel comfortable about the difference in beliefs.

    Many many moons ago I married the eldest son of a polygamist. Two of his wives were sisters but by the time I entered the family both of them had left their husband (after 30 years of marriage). I once asked them what it was like being sisters and wives and they both just kinda shrugged and said it was easier to deal with each other than the other wives as they had already grown up together and knew how to communicate. The church they used to attend would try to push the men to marry sisters because it was easy to convince them and they were less likely to fight.

    1:30 I don't go much for Genesis. I much prefer The Hobbit, even over LoTR. However for anyone considering reading Genesis, I _do_ recommend the version by R. Crumb, fully illustrated in his usual style. He doesn't change a word of it. He just adds the much needed illustrations.
    6:30 Yes, some of the family relationships in Genesis were quite interesting. Let's not forget Lot and his daughters. Genesis 19 : 30-38 That was an interesting episode.
    16:30 Emma, it's interesting to hear you talk about the position of slaves and women at the same time. The daughters, women given to the men as "wives", effectively have no more freedom than the handmaidens, the slaves. The only difference is that the wives can have slaves as well as be slaves, whereas the slaves have virtually no possessions.
    21:50 She sounds like she's struggling in her own life. It sounds like she's talking about herself. It will be interesting to see if she's able to maintain this "traditional role" and if not, how the threads come unraveled.

    I think what’s extra sad about Leah’s story is that it wasn’t just that she was made to marry Jacob, but back then the fact that she’s the one who slept with him on the wedding night (which is kind of a double SA situation on the father’s part if you think about it - Leah’s consent isn’t taken at all into account and Jacob did not consent to have sex with Leah) meant that she would be considered unmarriagable from then on if Jacob rejected her because she wasn’t a virgin anymore. So whether or not she wanted to be there at all, this was the only security she was going to be allowed.

    Oooh! This reminds me of one of my favorite books: *The Red Tent* by Anita Diamant!!
    Such a good book, I *HIGHLY* recommend it. Diamant created a beautiful life story about Dinah, the daughter of Leah, the only daughter in the whole Jacob-Leah-Rachel-Billah-Zilpha family.
    Dinah is such a small character in the Bible, she has no voice of her own, her little blip of a story isn’t even from her POV. And I love what Diamant did with this biblical character, what she did *for* Dinah’s story. Actually made her the main character and narrator of her own life.
    Diamant herself is Jewish, but there’s nothing religious about this book (meaning no religious agenda, teachings, etc.) I say this so that no one is deterred from reading it, worried that religious beliefs might be forced on the reader. The beliefs and gods of Dinah’s parents are talked about, who they are, and sacred rituals practiced, but that’s it.
    So, with that said, go read it if you haven’t yet, and if you have, leave a comment about it! I’m hoping there are lots of people who love this story as much as I do (but I’m certainly open to listening to any literary criticisms, lol!) ❤❤❤

And how the 'others' told yahweh to get his toys out of the garden,(ok, I paraphrased that, lol) they said, 'lest they also eat of the tree of life and become immortal, like us!'. So, the 'fall' did not bring death! Great responses to her, I love your way!👍💖💙🥰✌

    This whole "strife is just something you need to deal with" thing can actually be quite harmful, especially when combined with typical religious opposition to divorce, because that means someone can be convinced that they should stay in a bad relationship.
    Of course things won't be perfect, and you should fix some problems, and accept others, but sometimes you also just need to get out of there.

    I really don't think she knows how utterly damaging and traumatizing it is to tell people that god not only knows your family strife but made it happen. My mom and I were victims of DV last month, my dad beat the shit out of us for the first time in my 29 years of life. I'm not religious because I already got that catholic trauma, got the t-shirt, left. But in that post-catholic traumatized state, hearing someone hint that the trouble in my family is god's design? I feel like that ripped my emotional stability for the day to shreds. If god is real and it was his idea for my dad to punch me in the teeth, he's going to answer to me someday.

    I think of her, and those like her, as basically "Americhristian" Jews(or my father and I have also used the term "Born Again" Jewish). Basically because of their societal environment growing up, they're really extreme/evangelical/American born again(whatever term you wanna go with) Christians, except being from Jewish backgrounds they identify as Jewish, and basically just ignore any directly Jesus stuff.
    In other words, they're technically Jewish by faith, but they're culturally evangelical Christians.

  • @jetplanejax

    I grew up as a religious Jew in a similar community to Abby. First of all there are very few women in general teaching Torah studies at this level of religiosity. I have had a few but this is mostly a man’s job in the community so this isn’t really a 1 to 1 comparison to a typical Torah learning context. But in terms of the themes of what she is saying, it’s not uncommon for things to be taken as symbolic lessons and to ignore morally questionable actions as something that is just different now since times have changed- symbolism and thematic understanding are huuuuge in Judaism like basically taken to be the whole point of the text. I think why she comes across so vague here is that this is very clearly a discussion for a general conservative/traditional type of woman (likely Christian) rather than Jewish women who already know these stories and their interpretations in more detail. A typical Jewish discussion about Torah studies would be much more in depth, analyzing anything from the structure of the text to the context to the specific wording in Hebrew- this is where meaning is typically extrapolated and discussed but that would be too complicated and requires a lot of background in Jewish knowledge that her audience doesn’t have. What she has said here is more akin to the first 5 minutes of a shiur (bible study session) on the weekly portion, after which phrasing and hidden meaning would be looked into along with the opinions of different important scholars

    • @daisy_rh
      @daisy_rh ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes this makes sense. I'm an ultra Orthodox Jew, and I assumed the same. I also found myself automatically interpreting the things she was saying in the way we would've learned it. With more layers than the basic way she was trying to explain it. Like when she was saying about strife being part of God's plan or whatever, my mind was just like oh she means because God created us with free will (a huge focus in Judaism), which is what makes us human; therefore, we sometimes make bad decisions and have disagreements or "strife" and it's a part of life that we need to work through to become better human beings. And that going through these human experiences doesn't make us worse or anything. It came across as her excusing bad behavior as "God's plan", but I think it's because she was addressing a wider audience and she didn't want to go too in depth.

    Abby, for all her appeals to religious orthodoxy, actually subscribes to the 'Best of all possible worlds' worldview which is surprisingly not an old viewpoint at all. The latter worldview argues that God, having considered all possible choices, made the world with the best ones possible. So basically if there are bad things in the world, they exist for a reason obvious to the creator.
    This was originally posited by the philosopher Gottfried Liebniz in the 17th Century. As expected it became popular among the religious and Conservative rulers of society. Voltaire, with his caricature of Leibniz as Pangloss in his brilliant satire 'Candide', effectively demonstrated the absurdity of the 'All possible worlds' viewpoint and the wrongheaded notions in terms of worldly social and political issues that would arise pursuing it.

Are the differences significant, or is it simply that the western godless and eastern godless simply laugh at different doctrines? Is it that a godless eastern person laughs at the idea that an eastern god gets seriously upset that when eastern women are in a public place with bare arms or shoulders, and that she has really offended Allah and has sinned terribly, whereas a godless western person laughs at the idea that an eastern god feels that if western people eat shrimp, or wears poly-cotton socks that Yahweh is deeply offended that they have done these terrible things, and have sinned terribly?
      I don’t have to imagine being godless and soulless, as technically, I’m both godless and soulless. It has not been demonstrated that either exist. I don’t believe that any supernatural beings exist, do you believe that fairies, pixies, and goblins exist? I certainly don’t.

      I don’t understand what you are trying to convey when you state *"imagine to… deny God and run anytime you see the word "Atheist" in TH-cam”* Personally, I view 'atheist' as simply a descriptor for who I am, I had no choice in being described in this way. _My_ take on being an atheist is, it's not _MY_ idea. I’m an atheist because of someone ELSE'S belief, not mine, it has nothing to do with me. I don't even want to be atheist.
      With regard to you saying "May God bless you anyway.” I would rather I didn’t get blessed by a racist, bigoted, misogynistic god with a penchant for genocide, and who advocates for slavery. If getting blessed by a supernatural being, I would prefer it being someone with better morals. Santa Clause would be better, he loves kids from all races and backgrounds, and additionally doesn’t subjugate those who don’t believe that he exists, to an eternity of torment in the hell.
      I hope you get blessed by your particular god, however immoral it may be.

    Hey Emma, at 21:14 you ask whether god created something not perfect. Christians would have to say no I guess, but for Jews this might not have to be the case. In his book "A new kind of Christianity" Christian pastor Brian McLaren pointed out, that Jewish and Christian views on perfection actually differ a lot. He argues that the Christian point of view was strongly influenced by Greek philosophy, thus the definition would be: Perfection means, that any change would be a degration (or aggravation or deterioration, sorry, English is too hard). But the Jewish god created a garden and regarded it good - No Greek god would agree on that being perfect. So maybe Abby is somehow referring to that tradition of non-perfection, which would actually be quite interesting and different from (especially Evangelical) Christianity. Greetings, Ben

    Yes, small mistakes people in the bible made. Like the guy who heard a voice in his head tell him to kill (sacrifice) his son and almost did it until the voice in his head said oh, never mind.

    You mentioned a disparity in Abby's ethos being rather mixed between Judaism and Christianity, there has been in the last decade or so a growing movement in the States of "Messianic Judaism". This was a path my family/cult took in my teens. (I'm happily escaped and recovered)
    This movement is sort of a hybrid between the belief systems, and a lot of her language and stating names in "English" as well as Hebrew is fairly common in those groups, as one of the generally held beliefs is that people should learn Hebrew to better understand the word of god as it was intended. I'm guessing this is the reason for the apparent disjointedness in her messaging.

      @maxbrown8044 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think she still claims to be a practicing Jew, not a Christian as Messianic Jews are more or less. She is probably just interspersing Christian ideology in order to appeal to her predominately Christian fanbase. I think religions are also starting to become more united in the US as they become less popular, as there's a strong emerging dichotomy between religious and non-religious which eclipses religious distinctions

    Regarding her raising Christianity above Judaism, both her and Ben know where their bread is buttered. They're target audience is evangelical Christians so they downplay their own faith to appeal to them.

    Life is hard and relationships are no exception. I’d think an attitude of “we can work it out” is healthier and more helpful than “whoops strife is god’s plan”. Also that outfit looks nice imo.
    Kinda like a cool modern twist with some 90’s Jean vibes. It works.
