- A former police detective allegedly strangled a pregnant woman to prevent her from blowing the cover on their alleged relationship. Matthew Farwell is accused of grooming Sandra Birchmore when she was underage while she participated in his department’s Explorers program. Birchmore was found dead in her Canton apartment in February 2021. Her death was originally ruled as self-inflicted until investigators discovered evidence allegedly linking Farwell to the killing. More important that we teach children the signs to look for when they are potentially being groomed and why consent laws for minors is there to protect them as they are psychologically immature compared to adults. They want to be able to make safe, informed participation in the things that matter to them otherwise they will regret it! Predators prey on the weak and vulnerable like a lion does. It's harder for the lion to capture a strong one.

Having been an Explorer Cadet, for 5-1/2 years, and ending that 5-1/2 years as Acting 'Chief', back in the '70s, we would have never even considered allowing a male officer to take these liberties with our post members. If we found out that our female members were being groomed, then the Chief of Police would have been immediately informed, and those officers would have been prosecuted and terminated immediately.
I worked at Yaamava Casino in highland some of the “officers” there also sought young young girls. Girls walking through the doors that had just turned 21 got them all excited. Keep in mind these men are in their late 30s and 40s. One in specific asked a girl if she could meet him after work. If she was 18 or slightly younger I’m sure it would have been the same approach. To make matters worse he’s a miserable bipolar cop now for LA county.

Looking at the indictment, the timeline is just so terrible. Matthew Farwell is only an officer for about a year before he starts grooming Birchmore. Let that sink in that the officers in this program did nothing to stop the grooming and eventual grape of a girl.

We need better psych evals for police. Because as it stands now: 47% of these men self reported to be violent towards their partner. There's something wrong with the people they hire.
