What I personally love about this scene is the fact that later on when Hans Landa asks them all to say their names, Omar is the only one who pronounces it properly despite him being 3rd best.

It’s actually funny because despite Aldo having the worst accent he technically does have the best understanding by of Italian. When lands starts speaking very fluently and ostentatious Italian Aldo actually responds correctly every time even if it’s only brief short statement. “Si, err correcto” “ gorlami” it’s atrocious pronunciation and accent but not a wrong response to what was said showing he wasn’t being delusional and arrogant apart from his accent being bad.

That a very showy and truly unnecessary scene. Fine acting by both actors but ludicrous...Landa knew all-too well there were "illegals" in the house and no doubt hiding under the floor. No need for that ridiculous interrogation.
Landa was far more menacing and excellent questioning the silly actress who foolishly left behind a huge clue as to her responsibility and the way he snidely questions where she'd been mountain climbing so close to Paris...

  • @tristandbarker

Genuinely evaluating every element of this scene in the vet clinic, the bar scene before it, and the theater after, there's a lot you can address to the layers of complexity Tarantinto wrote into this sequence.
Looking at it from the character's own standpoint
-von Hammersmark definitely likes her odds with Wicki, Stigliz, and Hicox since they speak German fluently until they're hosed by Wilhelm who doesn't make Hicox's accent
-Hellstrom calling Stigliz and Wicki correctly on their accents and von Hammersmark's anxiety during the entire sequence knowing she's probably screwed
-the lack of any hesitation for von Hammersmark to mag dump Wilhelm when the Americans agree to let him walk so she can try to cover her tracks only to leave evidence behind that would incriminate her (the napkin and the broken shoe)
-in the presence of the Americans she's far less comfortable and thinks they have no chance to succeed but "f it, send it" with the improvised Italian cameramen (genius play by QT to let Omar speak Italian the most convincingly after being told to STFU 10 minutes earlier lol)
I feel like it's also worth mentioning, on the subject of the controversial choking scene (which Krueger later defended), Tarantino did not want her in the movie. She flew herself to New York City to meet with him and convince him she was right for the part. Take away from that what you want.
And one final dollop of icing on all of this. For as batshit as all of Eli Roth's scenes are, Adam Sandler was meant to play Donnie. Figure for how comedically unhinged this movie might be had Sandler not been tied up in a production conflict at the time Inglourious Basterds was filmed.

i think it's far broader than that: European v. British/American. all my european friends (albeit limited to French, Italian, Danish) count "one" with their thumb pointing up, and add fingers as they go (and at least the europeans I know tend to keep their palm toward themselves in the process), while we Americans and Brits count "one" with the index finger and add fingers as they go, holding back the remaining fingers with the thumb until adding this last upon reaching "five" (with palm facing away from themselves, as the unfortunate "captain" did). indeed, this distinction is so readily noticed by an American touring Europe, that a spy supposedly trained to impersonate a German soldier could never seriously have failed to be taught this. This is either a terrible flaw in the script (banking on a typical American audience being sufficiently unaware of this cultural difference as to find it easy to accept it as a trivial detail only the wily Major noticed, or we are to assume that the "Captain" had drank enough to become careless but realized his mistake as well and just hoped no one else noticed. Hard to say for sure, but Hollywood big wigs tend to view their own American audiences as "rubes", so the former is more likely the case. that's why they had to insert the later scene where they explained it to the audience explicitly -- to show how the screenwriter was smarter than the rubes.

His accent was weird, but his excuse wasn’t the worst actually. Especially in the 40s, each little nook and valley in southern Germany would have their own weird accents and quirks. Not only that, but Piz Palü, where he says he’s from, is in Switzerland, and Swiss German (and their accents) are even more odd. To my ears, his accent did actually sound a bit Swiss German. Without the ‘3’ mishap, he actually might have gotten away with it.
