Believe it or not: I have had good results bugling with a bugle made of poly-resin. YES, a plastic bugle. It lacks the crispness of brass, but for colder weather it did well.
I bought one. It arrived in a plastic bag, from China, to London. Remarkably, hardly dented. I will say, they appear to be very consistent instruments, because the intonation on mine is EXACTLY the same. Bach can't say the same.
I didn't get cheated. I got an Olds Ambassador trigger trombone in Bb/F for $125. It arrived with a case (which was not in the ad) and the only real issue is a little bit of corrosion on the slide.
Greetings Trent! After reading your DIRE WARNING about the highly nonexistent quality of this instrument, I just knew I had to order one for myself! I can confirm that this bugle not only astounds but in fact exceeds all expectations of shoddy. The price, of course, has gone up slightly over the last six years, but I can vouchsafe that the quality of this instrument has not risen one iota! In fact, if anything I would say that the makers have made great strides in ensuring that materials and craftsmanship are reduced whilst quality control remains nonexistent. In fact, unlike your example, mine includes several quite festive bits of sharp metal around the mouthpiece receiver, a distinct lack of solder, AND several rather fun and decorative areas where the craftsman had apparently practiced his cheese grating technique on the various segments of tubing, giving the instrument the appearance of a julienned carrot. Like yours, the pitted metal of the bell has been enhanced with dents and cracks. I was somewhat disappointed that the surface of the metal was not rough, but was ecstatic to note that the instrument does not feature a tuning slide. I think this avant garde feature should be incorporated into more musical instrument designs. After all, we've had a good five centuries or so of in tune classical music. I think it's time we broke the mold and let everyone choose their own tuning. All in all, I am so glad you brought this fine quality pseudo-bugle to the public's attention!

Chris Black You have the right notes. The other poster was noting that the music for the trumpet will be transposed. The open note root harmonic will be a Bb but the trumpet player's sheet music will show this as a C. Then, relative to that root, the harmonics should be a 5th, an octave, an octave plus a 3rd, an octave plus a 5th, and a double octave. So you're both right, depending on perspective.
