For Americans, horses are companions, beloved pets, and even a favorite sport. I don't believe Americans have any intention of processing a horse into food.

Yes, in the United States, horses are primarily valued for their companionship, athleticism, and cultural significance, rather than as a source of food.

But it’s accepted to put unwanted horses on trucks to Canada and Mexico, much further than when there were horse packing plants here?
Especially to Mexico where in inhumane is a gift compared to how they’re handled until finally slaughtered..
The worst thing ever for horses here was when horse slaughter was banned here, use some common sense in your emotional outcries .

That's true! For many Americans, horses hold a special place in their hearts as companions and pets. They play a big role in sports and recreational activities, and it's generally not common to think of them as a food source here

Don't fool yourself. There are Americans who eat horses.
Before the Inspectors were pulled, making it impossible to inspect and pass the meat for human consumption, people could buy intersected Grade A cuts at the horse meat shops; now they have to rely on the black market, which puts everyone's horses in peril.

I see two sides to horse meat. Horses are considered as livestock, therefore, it can be utilized for meat purposes. Was told by my grandfather, as a farmer, draft horse trainer, and WWII soldier, that horse meat was delicious when prepared well. Sweet meat because of they being fed grass/hay for most of its diet. I would not shame anyone who enjoyed horse meat or part of their culture to eat OR to feed their dogs and cats/zoo animals with horse meat. Several issues I am concerned about, are the medications being put in our horses. Are they safe for human and pet consumption? The humane way of transporting horses to processing facilities and dispatching in a very quick way would be much preferred. There is no easy way of doing this, when there isn't enough adoptees or buyers for wild/feral horses/unwanted/untrainable horses. Our economy has shifted, people are scaling back on horses due to the high cost of hay and grain, along with facilities (own barn or boarding stables). There will always be a market for horses, wild or domestic, and when we have too many horses, there has to be an "outlet", therefore horse slaughter facilities would be needed. And to answer your question, would I eat horse meat? Yes, I would, as long it wasn't medicated or vaccinated. Too many of the equine veterinarian medications are not used for human consumption unless they are using a general broad spectrum medications used for meat animals for human consumption.

"Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization, we find the hoofprint of the horse beside it." John Moore (1858-1929)
There are animals that humans domesticated for sustenance, clothing and durable goods like cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, etc.; and there are those that were domesticated as entertaining and beloved companions and work helpers such as dogs, cats, canaries, parakeets etc. & horses, that should be classified as animal companions and NEVER as livestock which permits them to be sold for slaughter for their meat, as horses are now classified.
The breeding of horses (and dogs & cats) needs to be more tightly controlled so there aren't such excesses in their numbers that they can't be individually cared for and are therefore vulnerable to death in shelters (dogs & cats) or in meat markets (horses).
The ancestors of these horses literally helped to establish, tame and build nations, including ours. We could not have done it without them! We owe them better as a species than to be mistreated and/or eaten!

In the 70s, I remember they were serving horse meat in restaurants climbing it was beef after the government forced cattle rancher to destroy tens of thousands of cattle and pushing them into trenches. I remember my grandfather telling me that horsemeat is a different texture, but it’s not bad to eat. I’m not recommending or suggesting people raise horses for meat, but why waste something that could be used if the animal is old or injured and has to be put down. Why not use them for dog meat in the wild bears, wolves, coyotes and mountain lions eat horses that come up lame this is part of nature

    • @tony98discovery

You need to correct this intro in print and clarify to your viewers, millions of horses are NOT raised for the sole purpose of meat processing in the United States..
It’s totally cost prohibitive to raise horses for meat, you’d go broke in a hurry..
We haven’t slaughtered horses for meat consumption here in the United States for many years and that was for export.
You’re above intro line really villainizes American Ranchers with a statement that is 2000% false..
