Nice video. But wouldn't in time this damage and burn the motor?
My home ac blower was starting to smell like burning while blowing air in the house, after troubleshooting i found some motor windings burned & black ( luckily i stopped it before cooking), further on i found the main feed relay for the motor was actually the problem, after so many contacts cycles the contact points were burn and didn't let pass much voltage and it was overheating the blower motor, because this happened at night i had no replacement at hand so i filed and clean down the contacts and was working good again, i am still using it and have a brand new spare for later.
    Thanks.

If the motor is cooled by an integrated fan it could definitely cause damage. As the speed decreases the amount of cooling air would also decrease. At low speeds it probably depends on the fan design if it would still be able to provide enough cooling. If it was allowed to stall there would be no cooling. I would not recommend this for unattended appliances...
This thing works but it is not really a good solution, you're better off just buying things with speed control built in.
If you really had your heart set on controlling a motor for long periods with this method, I would suggest additional cooling and thermal protection circuits.

legit question but it won't harm the tool in any way. though it does spin slower and the fan puts out less air, don't forget that there is also lower current passing through the tool. also have you seen a corded tool with speed controller embeded? It is exactly the same control board. The difference is that in one case it's inside the tool cell and in the other is external. I always favoured the external solution, cause you can get cheaper corded tools ( cheaper cause they lack the speed controller) and you can combine them with the external solution. Also the external unit can be connected to any corded tool and in essence you can make all of your corded tools have speed control. Max cost to build an external box would be around 8 euros.

@@ΣΤΑΥΡΟΣΓΚΕΡΛΕΣHow would you make that box that cheap?? I would like to make one to make orbital sander, grinder and Dremel go slower because the ones I have are to fast even at the lowest speed.
If you can tell my what should I buy that be awesome. Obviously if you think that it will work with said tools.

@GnarledSage OK, 3.5 euros for a 2000 watt controller, 1,5 eur for a cheap current plug, and 5 eur for a plastc box. Use wires of your own preference, I suspect that you have many laying around and voila, under 10 eur you have a decent speed controller.

Cool idea. Looking at getting a large belt sander but need it to run slower, might do the trick.

I also thought of this. Thanks for sharing! Did you use it on a big angle grinder?

Will this work on a high heat soldering gun to reduce heat? Thank you?

    • @ChuckBrosnan
      @ChuckBrosnan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It should. Some heating circuits will use a thermal switch to turn the heating element off above the target temp. If this is the case, it should still work, but it might do something weird. If it does not contain any sort of similar mechanical logic, then yes it would work. My soldering iron is digitally controlled or I would test this for you.

How can I know if a drill is brushless or not? I'm trying to make a rotisserie with a cheap drill like harbor freaght , think it would be brushed?

I would check the owners manual and search for the word brush. Usually they link the manual on the website.

Only modern expensive stuff tends to be brushless works a treat on my grinder which has become a variable speed polisher:-)

If you are seeing little sparks from the motor side when you use your tool at full speed, it is brushed, while brushless don't have sparks

You can only change the speed of AC by changing the speed, ie frequency.
Nice to show folks on your part though.
