I wholeheartedly resonate with your statement about consuming so much TH-cam that it feels appropriate to be a contributor to the conversations you are already engaging with as a consumer.
I just published my 4th video 2 days ago. A whopping 182 views! But I'm just going to keep making things to see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration Luc!
What I appreciate about this video is that you're saying out loud the you don't want to be a full-time TH-camr. I too have lots of opinions and get a bit bored with seeing the same things regurgitated by the same circle of creators. I would much rather see what working filmmakers and industry folks are doing behind the scenes and learn from them. I was just at a Festival and got so much more out of conversations with working pros.
Alright you got me! I've been "trying" this youtube thing for more than a year and out of nowhere some videos started to blow up a little bit, but I started to second guess my videos and I haven't post anything for months... So this is my signal to get back! Thank you!!
A lot of us were confident that your channel is going to grow because of the wisdom and lessons that you share to us - things that can only come from years of experience doing actual film work. You are a filmmaker first, and a TH-camr second. Thank you for also sharing your reflections about your failures as a filmmaker and how you learned from them. All the best forward!
Wow I got a ton of value out of this vid man, dont pay the hater any attention, seriously not worth your time. Heck block those people, your true fans will not mind a bit! I loved the vid and it definitely motivated me bro. All the best.
Thanks Matt, appreciate the support! Didn't take it as hate though, it was a valid point and all feedback well argued is welcome. Glad you got value out of it though for sure, that's always the aim!
It's great to have more traditionally experienced filmmakers coming on to youtube. TH-cam-forward film channels are great for beginners but there's a big audience out there waiting for meatier content like your channel
Thanks for this! I'm been trying to build my channel since late last year and just got up to 118 subscribers. Definitely not expecting much but I feel like I was at the same point as you. I'm always on youtube watching filmmaking videos so I'm slowly trying to add to the conversation myself. I appreciate all of your advice in this video!
Luc, perhaps the biggest thing I'm interested in knowing is how you made peace with the idea of being on camera instead of being behind it. I don't mean the act of being filmed, per se....I'm used to that. I mean the feeling of vulnerability or discomfort that comes from now being a growing 'influencer' with the public eye now on you regularly, even in a modest way? I'm making assumptions, but you don't strike me as someone who has always wanted to be under the spotlight. Any advice, for someone who understands the potential and logic of making a TH-cam channel...but who is struggling to make peace with putting myself out there, on camera, and therefore at the mercy of the internet? "F*ck the hatez" / YOLO is all well and good, but frustratingly doesn't quite do enough to make me take the plunge.
Oh definitely not, I hated being on camera and still find it weird. I just locked myself into a weekly publishing schedule and made sure to upload no matter what, and eventually found a way to be somewhat at peace with it. Scripting helps a lot as I'm useless as just rambling to camera, doesn't work for me at all. It was actually easier in the beginning when no one was watching, but then I was really bad at it. Now that I have a small audience and people are actually paying attention, there's more stress, but I'm a little better so it all evens out. The key is remembering that no one really cares what you're doing, they're too busy worrying about their own lives, and any real haters out there are bridge trolls. Honestly in nearly 100 videos I haven't gotten a single real hater. People have disagreed with me, and that's totally cool, but I can't really think of a single person who's been actually mean/hateful. If you can find a single truly hurtful comment on my channel (I've never deleted anything), I'd be surprised. It only works with consistency, so forcing yourself to just keep going is the only way to get better, which will bring more people. By the time any significant number of people is watching, you'll have improved and the cycle will repeat. Talk to me again if I ever get a truly large audience on here, but at the moment I've found TH-cam a largely supportive community and I've come to actually like the process. Not the recording necessarily, but the act of writing, making and publishing has been great for me. Commit to 50 videos and I promise you'll get used to it.
My path has been similar to yours, but in a non-film industry. The real payoff is in promotion for your "other" business. With a similar subscriber base to you, I get more work offers than I can handle so I get to work on the ones that are interesting, and interesting jobs generate more ideas for interesting content. It works for my clients because their projects get some exposure and they contribute to educating the next generation of geologists. I don't do sponsorship deals and the ad revenue is trivial, but my linked paid channel with extended videos generates enough to pay for my mid level camera gear.
Yes man! really glad to hear that, I've had a very similar experience. It's not at all what I thought it would be, but it's had so many unexpected benefits that I only wish I'd started sooner. Thanks for sharing!
Big thanks for this video Luc. I have been contemplating and planning and thinking about starting proper TH-cam channel for years now. First ideas and motivations were scattered and random and I felt I need to prepare, grow, get better before I could start, so I kept postponing it for years. Now I feel like I have to stop feeding the resistance with excuses and face my own fear of failure and just do it. This video was very inspirational and helpful to help me realize that I have to stop wasting time by waiting around thinking Im not ready yet and start creating in the content I have carried inside me for years now and put it out there. Cheers from Thailand . Keep on inspiring bro, honest advice and example is always needed and appreciated.
Great video as always Luc! Your videos inspired me to start creating videos for my TH-cam channel again. I probably watch more TH-cam than traditional media and want to start to give back to the community that I've learned so much from. Getting back into creating content has definitely helped with my craft (you can never have too many hours behind the camera), but getting into a consistent rhythm has definitely been a bit of a challenge for me. I really like the system that you've developed to create your videos for your channel. I've tried to batch record my videos in the past, but my piece to cameras always take so much more time as I fumble my way through my script, so I only ever really get through one piece to camera in any one session haha. Like navigating through the industry as a freelance dop many years ago, I'm looking forward to seeing where creating for TH-cam takes me. Thanks for creating videos like this as it's never too late to start creating.
Loved this video, Luc. Even a non-monetized, non-pro, retired hobbyist shooter like me, can enjoy executing TH-cam video projects on subjects that are sometimes useful to others from a how-to standpoint, and, in my case, provide a little entertainment and education for the grandkids, which is the audience I care about the most. This was helpful to me. Thanks.
Echoing comments about how inspiring this video is! Great stuff, Luc. Just stumbled on your channel about a week ago and it’s already one of my favorites. Like your style, substance and integrity. We have used our YT channel to try to learn and master our craft. It’s a tough slog (500 subscribers) but all the growth has been organic. This is a second “career” for me - just retired. Will take a look at the kickstarter - sounds like exactly what we need. Good luck with this endeavor and thanks for your efforts in generating quality content.
Thank you for sharing this. I’m on this same journey. Friends have been telling me that my mentoring content has to live on TH-cam. So I’m looking for all sources of inspiration
Really interested in the kickstarter. I started a channel 10 months ago and have seen a lot of these benefits you mention: network expansion, new clientele/opportunities and even offering consultation calls. So a micro version of your channel 😄 Also, a 2k subscriber audience that actually seem interested in my next upload. I’m wondering how a channel at my stage would fit in the program? Thanks Luc.
Love your stuff Luc, glad to see this channel growing. I'm in that space where I've definitely known I need to make time and space to invest in TH-cam for years, aaaaand I'm definitely in the club of people who has trouble making that time and space in a way that balances with professional work. Probably not in a good place to be a good applicant for your class right now but sounds like a great opportunity, maybe if you bring it around again I'll be in a good spot to apply.
I told myself this year I’m going to post more often and take TH-cam more seriously. It’s only been a few months and I’ve already seen some of the benefits you’ve spoken about! Not only that but the best part is, it forces you take create something where as before I would sit around and wait for people to hit me up. Great video Luc, it was great to hear someone that shares the same perspective!
I appreciate not having ads every video, but I really feel one per video is more than warranted. All your fans are in the same boat in some ways, so any haters should really understand the hustle. Your library is large and is going to keep generating small amounts of money, even if you quit Tomorrow.
I have been watching your videos for a while and find your work really inspiring. My other channel is my official youtube, but I've been finding it challenging to unify my professional client work with my personal projects and passions in one place. Looking forward to checking out your Kickstarter Program.
Glad it's working out for you! I had a Patreon channel that paid my rent for a while, but I decided to stop because the necessity to post a video every week was negatively affecting my work quality and lowering my self respect as an artist. I'm fortunate to have dual careers in music and filmmaking, and I've learned a lot from your channel that I truly appreciate it!
110 percent appreciate your effort to script....failure to deliver a straight story is unbearable to me, happy to switch off after 15 seconds when I notice it...
Scripting has made a massive difference to my ability to do better videos. Now I need to really follow your example of batching. As you, I have a very busy shooting schedule for my paid jobs, so getting time to do TH-cam is very limited.
Super inspiring stuff Luc. Especially with your upload consistency. I've probably been too much of a perfectionist and not focusing on building the systems to stay on a regular release schedule, hence the slow growth I've experienced over the last 2 years of putting out content. You've inspired me to give batching a a proper try for my next releases 🙌
It's a game changer, to use an overused word. I'd never be able to keep this going and keep my job without batching, definitely give it a try. Consistency is king on here, and getting out one a week regardless of the inevitable flops and fails is the only way through. I had 3 videos in a row flop recently but by the time I could see the analytics I'd already recorded the next batch so it didn't matter anymore!
It was good to run into your content a month or so ago. It is great to hear from another analytical thinker that is process driven and honest about their influence compared with their process skills. Great work!
Great video! Something I’ve been looking to build on and now that I finally finished a few life changes (moving, family care) I am excited to dive in and talk about my filmmaking journey on my channel as well. Thank you for the insight and encouragement!
This is such a great video Luc. I struggle because all the big loud talking head bros are shouting but it seems like there's less room for women and quiet content. I want to get going but it's very demoralizing when the Think type guys are bellowing about tutorials and flash editing.
Thank you, very happy you liked it! Some good news is that these days there are more and more women in key creative roles within the mainstream industry than ever before and that's growing all the time - so at least things are trending in the right direction, even if it's slow. Keep it up!
The funny part is that I actually would love the other way around topic: how to use documentary youtube vlog channel to bridge into documentary filmmaking on streaming or tv?
Good advice, and you may have inspired me to start taking my own TH-cam channel seriously, so thank you for that 🙂 I particularly like your idea of batch filming, that makes so much sense. Cheers Luc!
Good luck with this! I’m not sure you can teach what you’ve got. I’ve watched a ton of people who do videos like you do but you are one of the very few that I watch repeatedly. Nonetheless, you are a great teacher so you might turn out some really good content providers at
L U C, Awesome content. I am not a filmmaker. But find your channel inspiring as i attempt to take video recordings to create content for family and friends. Super inspiring. Keep it up. Cheers
very very good stuff. Sounds doable and makes sense. Will have a rethink if this could be for me. Still unsure if I want to be in front of the camera. And what on earth to talk about, that hasn’t been done a zillion times…
Damn, solid idea shooting multiple video in each session is genius because one of my "demotivators" is having to set up and send down every few days. And like you said, jumping between the scripting, shooting and editing can get frustrating.
Yeah, the set up is the worst part and will eat so much time! Batching is the only way I make it work - my record is 13 videos in the bank and then I went off on a 3 month shoot and the channel just kept going!
Recently found your channel and love the content you're putting out, it's def inspiring as I try to pursue filmmaking while also going back to making youtube videos
I am interested and geeked to connect with you. I am a 68 guy who has been doing marketing and video work for the past 40 years who is presently writing and shaping the next chapter of my life as a doc filmmaker. I am getting ready to jump into AOD (based on a video you did recommending it) on Sept 8th where I am going to be signing up for the full boat of all the modules. I have thought a lot about about doing a TH-cam channel, Luc, and getting your guidance would be fantastic. Looking forward to meeting you.
This is awesome. I'm currently in the early starting phase of my TH-cam journey. The most difficult thing for me is trying to not let the analytics stop me from creating. The reason I stopped before is because I didn't see growth but how are you suppose to see growth in a few weeks, right? Definietly gonna take these tips and put them to use.
super nice video, I kind of in the same situation here of, of trying to get my work out there but struggling with the idea of putting my face out there. btw I am also a cinematography/ photographer/documentary film maker
Hey Luc, first of all, great video and breakdown of your TH-cam workflow. Very insightful and interesting to see how you do things. That being said, I personally fundamentally disagree with the core message of this. As a filmmaker you absolutely do not "NEED" a channel. I get that you were going for a motivational video to push those filmmakers who WANT to start a channel but NEED isn't the same as WANT. Regardless of your positive experience and the benefits you've been able to get from having a channel, it is a very slippery slope telling people they also need to put in the time and effort into the same thing. This video kind of really ignores the fact that not EVERY filmmaker will have the same goals or interests with their work as yours. Furthermore, in a world where being a creator is becoming more and more popular as a career choice, the last thing a lot of people need is someone telling them they need to be doing something that they're not yet and adding yet another thing to worry about missing out on. I myself am a filmmaker who has a channel and agree that it's something that was right for me, but I would only ever recommend it to others if I know they're on the fence about it. I also understand that you're playing the TH-cam game with the titles but you should really consider that now, with a bit of a larger audience, your content can have just as much of a negative impact on someone who's already struggling to get their filmmaking career going by giving them one more thing they think they have to get started with and dedicate their time to. Don't mean to be rude or anything, I just think there's a better way to convey your message while taking into account multiple points of view different than your own.
I guess I didn't get the same takeaway on the emphasis on the NEED part of the equation. I read it more as a call to action for those aspiring filmmakers. I tend to agree that any aspiring filmmaker should start a channel for the pure reason of practice. The more you're filming, the more experience you get and the more chance you get to tell a story. Taking the time to do the many things you would do on maybe a larger scale for a bigger production, but doing it on a budget will help you in the long run, i.e. setting up your shoots, committing to deadlines, learning small tricks to make your time more efficient, etc. If you aren't able to do it on a smaller scale, there are some hard truths that we have to ask ourselves at times. We have the same struggles in putting our work out there for all to see with maybe a more niche demographic, but how do you translate that to a self-sustaining system that can pay for the cost of running the channel without losing the integrity of the intention behind the project. We hope to learn more as we go, but I think it's great to learn these lessons on the smaller scale now before a bunch of subscribers or bigger project we might come into so we can look back and lean back on these lessons.
I think that is a good point, and it can be a bit overwhelming starting out as a solo filmmaker with all of the technical and creative aspects to master, without having FOMO for not having a TH-cam channel. I think that Luc probably has good intentions though and has created a useful video so I will certainly continue to watch his content.
@@scottsfreelunch That isn't the point though. There are a lot of other ways to practice and learn the skills you listed out that don't need to be related to the stress of running a channel. Because while I agree it gives you a platform to practice on, take it from someone who's recently experienced decent growth on their channel, that it is far from being something everyone is going to find works for them. Much like everything else in life, this isn't a one size fits all thing. Some filmmakers will absolutely find TH-cam is a great place to grow relative to their mindset and personal approach to things. At the same time, others will find that having a channel takes away from the time they could potentially be spending on growing in a different way that fits them better.
@seasprayvideo Oh absolutely, by all means. I really enjoy his content as well and I definitely won't stop watching because I disagree with something 😂 I just felt like this was something worth mentioning because I've been exactly in the position of someone trying to get stuff going career wise and at the same time having this worry in the back of my head that I'm missing out on so much by not starting my channel yet.
@@georgekamenov_ I agree that there are many paths, and in the end, it might take away from what you inevitably want to achieve due to time or money, but I think the people who are likely going to come to this video would potentially need that little push of motivation to do something more instead of waiting on things to come to them. If in the end TH-cam is not the right avenue for you, you still learned along the way and got some experience that you can take to your next project. I think in the end, you want to go create things and put it out there for those to critique and make you better. TH-cam offers a big pool of potential audience members and is one of the best ways to connect to people if you don't have an established community. Either way, I think we all just want people go create awesome things and keep pushing others to be better project after project!
I hate talking to the camera, the most I can do is post the work I do, but for that is better vimeo, TH-cam is more for talking, teaching and reviews. So what’s good for me here?
I agree with this 100% Luc...just don't tell Redditors ;) Love your channel though dude. Your videos have been a huge help in planning our first BIG documentary. Thanks!
Imo, your secret is not about your weekly schedule or ability to find sponsors; you simply make great interesting videos. I mean as an actor and as a content creator. You have something to share and know (or feel) how to do it in the interesting and right way :)
i try it but fall , i was filming editing and manegin a sort of tv show with interview , but the channel had barly 100sub avrage view per video was 100-300 , and my personal channel darkphotographer studio , wher i upload small band video that i shoot from multi cam live to video clip i make had only 40 sub and not many view don't really know what subject to do .and also i look bad on camera and don t speek well :P
You didn't fail! It takes time, lots of time. I made 1 video per week for 6 months without passing 400 subs, and my first 10 videos had less than 100 views each, many less than 50. There's a system to doing it, finding topics, and getting better on camera, but the key is consistent uploading for a long period of time. Go look at MKBHD's channel and go back to the beginning. He's one of the most popular on earth and he made like 100 videos before he got 75 subs!
@@LucForsyth well thing is mkbhd and ltt start in time when ther was not much on computer review , try search today for review and you will get the 10 big channels and 1000 other small channel that nobudy will care since you got you info from one of the 10 big ones , search photography ,video or play guitar you will get the same ,
Thanks for this video it was super inspiring and informative! Question about getting your first sponsors, were you reaching out to potential sponsors and pitching yourself or were they coming to you?
No offense to all the successful filmmakers who want to charge money to mentor their fans, but I think regular courses are the way to go. No one wants to pay thousands to be up under you and be under your full control. For all that I suggest film school
Having a TH-cam channel is such a great way of practicing pre-production, shooting, storytelling, editing, and delivery.
This! Everytime I go to make a video I realize just how little planning I put into it and have to rethink my process.
I wholeheartedly resonate with your statement about consuming so much TH-cam that it feels appropriate to be a contributor to the conversations you are already engaging with as a consumer.
So much TH-cam. hahah
I just published my 4th video 2 days ago. A whopping 182 views! But I'm just going to keep making things to see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration Luc!
That is a lot better than my 4th video, by at least 4x!
I have a different approach to my channel, but I definitely agree with this. I wish I had taken it seriously years earlier.
Thx for the Video Luc - Big fan - as a middle TV / Film teacher your video gives me hope that one day my channel will grow! Thx for the inspiration!
You got it Oliver!

Thanks man, appreciate it! And yeah - it's really tough to find that balance, but sharing it all publicly is going to pay off big time in my opinion
Absolutely agreed! 👍 TH-cam is a must for creators.
Great video Luc and congrats, well deserved. The topic of scripting is of interest, if you want to expand on that it would be awesome. Ta!
@@LucForsyth This is super helpful Luc. Thanks :) Just changed my upload schedule to 1 per week to give myself that kick in the bum 🦵
It was good to run into your content a month or so ago. It is great to hear from another analytical thinker that is process driven and honest about their influence compared with their process skills. Great work!
Thank you so much for the encouragement Luc. I started watching your content when you had around 1200 subs so it's actually amazing to see you grow :)
Great video! Something I’ve been looking to build on and now that I finally finished a few life changes (moving, family care) I am excited to dive in and talk about my filmmaking journey on my channel as well.
Thank you for the insight and encouragement!
Luc you are a real one. thank you for constant inspiration.. or once a week lol
Nonetheless, you are a great teacher so you might turn out some really good content providers at
At last a decent TH-cam filmmaker! Great content, subscribed buddy 👍🏻📽️🎞️🎥🇬🇧
L U C, Awesome content. I am not a filmmaker. But find your channel inspiring as i attempt to take video recordings to create content for family and friends. Super inspiring. Keep it up. Cheers
Thanks Bryant, appreciate that man!
Thank you, this is a real motivation video 👍🏽
very very good stuff. Sounds doable and makes sense. Will have a rethink if this could be for me. Still unsure if I want to be in front of the camera. And what on earth to talk about, that hasn’t been done a zillion times…
Dude... exactly what I needed now
great video! you're a big influence on why i decided to start my own channel!
That's amazing man, really glad to hear it. It takes ages, but after about a year or so of consistency it's amazing what can happen...
Thanks Luc I appreciate you 😄🙏🎶
Love the story, thank you for sharing! Definitely inspiring
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Wow, 13 in one go, that's crazy. But now I at least know it is possible! haha. Thanks for the great content !👌
Recently found your channel and love the content you're putting out, it's def inspiring as I try to pursue filmmaking while also going back to making youtube videos
Thanks man, much appreciated!
“Made it, now going to sell classes and LUTs and make passive $$” video. Glad you hit it
haha, still no LUTs here!
This is a great video! I just recently decided to get consistent and although not growing too fast, hopefully over the next year I'll see growth.
Nice one! Yeah it takes ages at the start and feels like there's no one there. Then one day it will go, just keep faith!
Great information!
great content man, thanks for the gold nuggets you gave us
This is awesome.
Great video. I'm loving this channel!
super nice video, I kind of in the same situation here of, of trying to get my work out there but struggling with the idea of putting my face out there. btw I am also a cinematography/ photographer/documentary film maker
This was great value.
Great advice!
I really needed this! Very inspiring and positive words. Happy I found your channel. Subscribed. Thank you.
Nice one! Glad to have you James!
This is great info. I think you have convinced me.
Go for it!
Yes youtube is a great source of information if you can create a channel to give back it is worth it...
"Today we're going to talk about everyone's favourite topic: Failure,"
Thanks for that, I actually laughed out loud at my desk.
I agree with this 100% Luc...just don't tell Redditors ;) Love your channel though dude. Your videos have been a huge help in planning our first BIG documentary. Thanks!
haha, I fear the day I ever appear on there...
And that's amazing, congrats! Love hearing that 👊🏻
Superb work dear
Very kool thanks
Wow this makes of sense
Imo, your secret is not about your weekly schedule or ability to find sponsors; you simply make great interesting videos. I mean as an actor and as a content creator. You have something to share and know (or feel) how to do it in the interesting and right way :)
Well I appreciate that! Thanks!
The proof that this is all good advice, is that 10 months after this video, You've gained 60,000 followers. Insanely impressive.
Thanks Luc
You're welcome Joost!
i try it but fall , i was filming editing and manegin a sort of tv show with interview , but the channel had barly 100sub avrage view per video was 100-300 , and my personal channel darkphotographer studio , wher i upload small band video that i shoot from multi cam live to video clip i make had only 40 sub and not many view don't really know what subject to do .and also i look bad on camera and don t speek well :P
$800 just from Adsense and amazon😮. That’s my mortgage. You may have convinced me!
Super inspiring
Thanks!
Love this as always! Not sure if you use a prompter - if so, which model do you use?
I do! It's from Glide Gear
One film at a time!
exactly!
Key Chrone K4, if you know then you know
The sound is life giving!
No offense to all the successful filmmakers who want to charge money to mentor their fans, but I think regular courses are the way to go. No one wants to pay thousands to be up under you and be under your full control. For all that I suggest film school
Do you have kids and still have time for a TH-cam channel?
Fx30 rules!
Shhh 🤫 Don’t reveal the secret.
Nah...
