The Dreamcast/PS2 generation was the beginning of the end for the arcade. The gulf between 16bit consoles and the model 2 hardware in the arcades was immense. Going to the arcade was a spectacle. Even during the PS1 years, the arcade was still miles ahead. When we got virtually arcade perfect model 3 games on the Dreamcast, the arcade just didn't seem that exciting any more, and it hasn't since.

Have you seen SFV on an arcade? Tekken 6? Now you pretty much gotta go to Japan to actually touch one but man... Huge difference versus consoles...

Arcade still had one huge advantage, tho: Luxury cabinets, special input methods and devices, hydraulics, huge 8 player setups and so on. Couldnt do that at home.

@@MH-yp6wg yes, good point. I do think these units fell out of favour though, as it became harder and harder for arcades to justify the enormous costs of those sorts of cabinet.

@@edonslow1456 Yeah well... sort of. All of this played a role in the decline of the arcades. But it also depends on the location, in Japan they still are somewhat popular, because the social "crowd"-factor also plays a role (showing off your skillz in front of a crowd!). So many music-games were released as 1:1 home version, but nevertheless hugely popular in the arcade for this reason.
But I was very sad when Sega closed their famous Arcade buildings. :(

That's cool that you put the Code to Increase Framerate at the top of the screen. So to run at a higher frame rate you sacrifice cosmetic stage features. Missing from the right side is the rally stage start. No spectators lining the sides of the track. The navigator yelling Oh No! was funny and great.

I'll take a locked framerate over a variable framerate any day. Well said, VCD. Great video. Love the channel.

  • @Shyning77

I have played both original (JAP) and "fixed" (PAL) versions. I have seen many (including magazines) saying that the "fixed" version is inferior because the frame rate is worse, but like you, I disagree. Yes, the original version is smoother at times, but that also means the frame rate drops are more frequent and much more noticeable, resulting in uncomfortable gameplay. The generally lower frame rate in the western versions also fixed some of the slowdowns the original version had (the first straight in the Desert course, for example). While not ideal, the western versions are a better compromise because there are less slowdowns and the frame rate, if lower in average, is more stable.
With that being said, later racing games proved that we could have had a much better port than what we got, but like Daytona USA for the Saturn (another rushed port early in the console's life span), SEGA Rally 2 on the Dreamcast is still a fun and great game that has a lot of extra content (tracks and cars) and that shouldn't be overlooked just because of its technical issues.

Press Up, A, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, B, Up at the Press Start Button screen to lock framerate to 30fps (a tone confirms correct entry).
That's different to the 60fps code that reduces visuals and still can't maintain 60fps much more than the vanilla default setting. This makes gameplay 100% stable and perfectly playable with no issues so you can enjoy the substantial additional content over the arcade version.
Where the arcade has 4 tracks, the home version offers the first three as track themes with 3 courses each, plus two all new themes on top with the same amount of courses for each, plus weather and time of day variations of all of these through the 10 year championship campaign.
So, while it's a technically challenged port, its gameplay & new content (against Sega's usual barebones efforts) make it more than worthwhile.
Of course it's also much higher resolution, Model 3 pushed just 62% the pixels (or Dreamcast pushes 161,29% the pixels), so something had to give for such an early port from such completely different architecture and programming methods, given they also added some effects/lighting. That's also part of why imo Daytona USA (2001) is nothing to scoff at next to Daytona USA 2 as that too is higher resolution with flawless performance and draw distance, it just aped the original game more than the sequel in style, theme and even gameplay and did so very successfully, it's ace!

Sega Rally 2 default is running something like 20/25 frames per second. and with the cheat code disabling details it runs around 35/45 frames per second. it looks better and make it more playable. but it's a technical fail. Sega Rally 2 was running better on Windows 98 PC computers with a less powerfull VideoLogic PowerVR2 Neon 250 graphic card ?! what did they wrong ?

Arcade has better textures, better models, better draw distance, constant 60fps and IMO far better artistic choice for colors and lighting.
DC has slightly better resolution and more content.

Didn't know the hack framerate version...the problem with this game is WindowsCE, which doesn't use full DC hw (probably even partly): even with half original framerate, the game still got a draw distance distincltly lower tha the original Model3 counterpart, of course DC properly programed could (and can) deliver a perfect conversion at rock solid 60 fps.
