There is a sword similar to this in fiction that I have seen, it is not necessarily gravity but it multiplies the momentum of the sword when you are swinging so that the blow has more force behind it than it should
I think one thing to note about the blades dissolving and reforming is that it isnt truly instant. Close, yes, but it isnt frame one (to steal a term from video games). On the scale of combat speeds, its demonstrated to be usable mid combat but i dont know if its fast enough to be used mid swing.

These are the kinds of videos, I wish could give a super like. The cutting mechanics and absorbing their weapons into their body is pretty cool. I made a character with the same morphing weapon and armor mechanic, but he was the material avatar of a deity, so it was a one of a kind weapon. He couldn't store it inside himself, but he carried it around disguised as a screwdriver and hid his armor as a necklace. I usually wrote him as an incognito presence, set in a modern time period; like Pixar's "Onward," hence the screwdriver and not something like a dagger. I used that setting way before Pixar did, so I assume they have spies everywhere, and stole it. There are important plot reasons he needs to limit the use of his power as much as possible, which helps raise the stakes when he runs into less than godly threats. He's gotta go balls to the wall in the best stories though. I was like 12 when I wrote my first story with him, and he was pitted against Jason Voorhees. This video coming on the heels of the one Skallagrim put up the other day, I'm feeling some creative sparks, so maybe I'll rewrite that one with an original Jason-esque villain.
Good to know that I've been consistently seeing your videos in my feed for like a week now. Even if I don't have time to watch the whole video, I'll just mute it and let it run its full course to keep up engagement.
When I play any RPG , I cant help myself, I always use the sword even if other wpns with better stats are available. Even exclusively use them in mount and blade.
Let's not forget that King David was one of the OGs of giant swords, as he used Goliaths sword for many years. Sadly, considering the bronze age era, it was probably just a short wide longsword, like an XVIIIc but imagine running into bronze age combat with the Balaur arms XVIIIc! Must have seemed magical at the time.
And people laughed and called it just lewd when Raiden Shogun pulled the sword out of her chest. Me I was like I’m dead it’s game over. 😂 Makes perfect sense for a magical blade to be stored in the body. Other players: “simp.”
Hearing that you consulted on one of my favourite fight scenes in all of fiction is not the crossover I was expecting in my life. The Adolin greatsword fight is truly awesome.
@userJohnSmith I believe we had it confirmed in Oathbringer, I know that we had it confirmed, may have been in an ask, but the properties is Aluminum in the cosmere are such that it always blocks investiture, and stuff, I remember a character talking about how if you pound aluminum into a sheet or something that shardblades will cut through it like any other sword, but that shardblades were no better at cutting aluminum than any conventional tool. But I may be mistaken
@userJohnSmith on Roshar, you can obtain it in one of 2 ways, extract it from mentors, or soulcastinf it, it itself can’t be affected by soul casting, but it is a known metal that can be produced by soulcastinf the Singers called it Ralkalest, also at one point Shallan had a necklace made of the stuff, it was the necklace she received from her father, the necklace she killed him with. Expensive but relatively easy to obtain in the days of radiants
@userJohnSmith it can’t be soulcasted but it can be produced by soulcasting, or you can get it from meteors Shallan was given a necklace made of Aluminum from her father, and it was said to be soulcasted, so expensive but relatively easy to obtain in the days of Radients.
Dalinar pulling off the 'Last Clap' against Szeth was one of the most badass things ever. And then it's followed up with Zahel both applauding him for it, and explaining very logically why that particular move is extremely impractical to train.
Getting Sanderson on your channel would be awesome! Discussing with him limitations of abilities or other lore topics, making weapons depicted in his book and testing it with him seems like it would be a great episode (or two)!
I loved the moments in Stormlight 4 that definitely had your input. Among other things, it was awesome to see a greatsword pitted against a mob of ruffians
If it doesn't flex on overstrike then the danger then becomes that of snapping! Glad you mentioned this issue though Shad. That end momentum is a real game changer in practical sword use - from single handed chops where it leads the momentum into the penetration, or rapiers and tip work were too much tip wait makes movement clumsy and a basic cut is plenty to stop a light or unarmed opponent. Where Two handed weapons it can help drive through the block German style, or lend depth to a false edge cut and the extra hand can carry the weight to make the blades stronger against moment of fracture. To maces and axes, where it is pure wastage. Long swords it's wasted energy that may break the weapon like whacking sticks vertical on the top of a fence. Or in katana where there's an important sweet spot and angle, that drive the edge deep and then the movement of the body is used to drive that momentum along the cut to reduce the breaking moment and to slide the edge through the target. And to scimitar and pulwar much are curved in such a way that the blade center doesn't go past point of contact thus won't break, and the momentum is along the blade with a center that is behind the blade proper so it will bite but then the emphasis on the curve to get that effect greatly changes the fighting chracteristics (the "basic box" of western style is less useful)
If I remember right there are sheilds being worked on that can block shardblades and there is also the bows which can peirce shardplate. I can see the sword form being better used especially for the windrunners while in the air so the size doesnt affect them as much
I love the Stormlight Archives, I was through book 1 and 2 before realizing the vastness of Sanderson's cosmere jumping right into Mistborn in the wait for what would have been Oathbringer at the time. Then the spiral in to Robert Jordan happened, and somewhere in there I read Shadow of the Conqueror. Eventually in the wait for Wind And Truth that arrived to me yesterday, reading the Tolkiens Silmarillion hobbit and LOTR. Finally, after what feels an eternity book 5 is here!

Plus as far as single book content warbreaker is going to prepare a reader more than just mistborn (the next 2 books are required for any real understanding of investiture, shards, and realms beyond the physical, and be referenced more in my experience. If OP is willing to commit to a whole trilogy mistborn is a great place to start though.
@ I guess my thought is that if they’re not willing to commit to a trilogy, how well it develops their understanding of the wider cosmere is pretty much moot. But if someone is looking to dive headfirst into the cosmere I definitely get your point
10:48 fighting a T-Rex With Gut's Dragonslayer :D
A deep Dive into fantasy weaponry, perfect video to enjoy my evening with
Hey Shad, please look into DC20 from the Dungeon Coach. I think you'll like the system from its stats to how armor works.
I'm commenting so that the algorithm will recommend your videos to me faster. It took 13 days to see this!
They are at least more elegant that axes. However when do not use swords I prefer polearms with something looking like a sword at the business end.
Very nice video! Fantasy meets medieval with many facts... the best combo! 👍
This really gets me thinking on exactly what practical qualities of an enchantment sword could be. Really widens room for imagination.
Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.
Shadblades...
And people laughed and called it just lewd when Raiden Shogun pulled the sword out of her chest.
Me I was like I’m dead it’s game over. 😂
Makes perfect sense for a magical blade to be stored in the body.
Other players: “simp.”
Hearing that you consulted on one of my favourite fight scenes in all of fiction is not the crossover I was expecting in my life. The Adolin greatsword fight is truly awesome.
Great series. I just mentioned shard blades vs light sabers in your last video. Then you release this!
Here's the usual full support for channel growth.
Considering that you had a hand in making some of the logic, I would rate this higher than normal fantasy series for that much extra detail.
Stormlight Archives is so fun ahhhh i cry lots and i felt your line omfg
Posting with the hype of wind and truth , my man❤
6:20 iirc shard blades are the same weight as a regular sized steel sword, so much lighter than a steal sword that size
I LOVE THESE TYPES OF VIDEOS!!
Man, I've been procrastinating book 4. Now I have an incentive to go back to Roshar
I click on Shad’s videos pretty fast. But never have I clicked on a video THIS FAST.
22:20 two options, Shard Plate, or aluminum Shield
@userJohnSmith I mean aluminum stops shard blades, and it is a light metal, sure there is the problem of not being able to lash it
@userJohnSmith I believe we had it confirmed in Oathbringer, I know that we had it confirmed, may have been in an ask, but the properties is Aluminum in the cosmere are such that it always blocks investiture, and stuff, I remember a character talking about how if you pound aluminum into a sheet or something that shardblades will cut through it like any other sword, but that shardblades were no better at cutting aluminum than any conventional tool. But I may be mistaken
@userJohnSmith oh and some advantages of aluminum are that it is cheaper than half shards, and it is likely to last longer against a shard blade
Very awesome theorising about fantasy swords!!!
Another reason the Shard Blades are so big is that this is their "theatrical" version. In reality they were mostly used in more practical forms
TH-cam Algorithm, recommend Shad stuff more often!
Shad, this video was in my notifications instantly. Thought you should know.
I loved the moments in Stormlight 4 that definitely had your input. Among other things, it was awesome to see a greatsword pitted against a mob of ruffians
I don’t know what to comment about so here it is. Cool video!!
Cool video, and well timed. Can't wait to read Stormlight 5.
Thanks for the video, Shad! SUPER close to finishing Rhythm of War, then off to Wind and Truth! :D
The stormlight archives are sick
In fact there are several acounts where character disapieres and reapieres shardblade in combat to avoid block
I can see the sword form being better used especially for the windrunners while in the air so the size doesnt affect them as much
Well this video made me wanna check out his books, been wanting to get back to reading after i finished Shad's novel Shadow of the Conqueror.
It's not about the length of the blade but how you use it
Oooh, this is a banger!
The fact that Shad helped with Storm Light 4 is kinda awesome. Go Shad!
I really need to finish Oathbringer...
You can just feel the Shad dripping off the greatsword scene in Shadesmare :p
I love Stormlight Archives. I'm waiting for the next one, like Starks for winter!
Wait, you came up with the great sword scene in RoW, I love that scene.
You must have gotten through to someone at TH-cam with your complaints, because that's twice in one day you've appeared in my feed, when before that it hadn't happened in months.
Congratulations! I hope this is the start of a comeback.
The blade isn't warped; it is simply optimized for stabbing people around corners! 05:02
I’m listening to the 3rd Mistborn book right now, listening to Stormlight Archives next
