    Thank you for your videos. You are a great teacher. As a tradesman myself, I can't imagine having to narrate my work as I'm doing a job. There tends to be so many things we do unconsciously over the years, I wouldn't know how to explain to people. But thank's for your secrets.

    Omg ty for taking two seconds to show a few different ways to cut things. It helps so much to learn how things are done and that we can start with what is available vs needing to buy each new tool in a new project. Several cutting methods helped me so much I had to find my phone to comment. Watch your videos all of the time.

      As a professional there's so much wrong with this video. You should never lay along the same grain as the original floor & if you do a ply sub-floor should be installed in the opposite direction of the original floor boards.
      Where's the vapour barrier?
      Why didn't you remove the skirting boards prior to starting?
      Why use a silly saw around architrave when you can use a multi-tool? @23:00 you can see you damaged the board next to where you were sawing. This would never of happened with a plunge blade on a multi-tool.
      Cowboy job!

      pull the baseboards off and skip the quarter round it looks a lot better and the quarter round looks terrible after it gets hit by brooms and other stuff in a few years. Also put a thin line of sealant on top of the base boards when you install them it keeps dust from getting in the crack and a quick wipe they look good.

    Hi Jeff. I’m a woman who grew up without a dad which meant as a kid, when stuff broke, I had to figure out how to fix things. Part of it may have just been the way my mind works. I’ve always liked to put things together, take stuff apart to see how it works, etc. Now I have my own house and do a lot of DIY. Your videos have helped me a few times but my favorite one I saw was one that included your son. You joked with him in the most loving way. I love everything about this video. One small thing to make it easier at 38:50:
    Cut your skinny wall boards and last full-width boards to length just like you did. Lock in your skinny wall boards in the full-width spot, lay your full-width boards against the wall, make a mark all the way down the wall boards that are locked in the full-width spot, pull them out and replace them with the actual full width boards. Prevents cutting too wide if the wall is bowed at all because your straight edge will always hit the wall at its widest point. Love your channel, you’re better than bob vila!

    20:44 do not use a standard compressor and blower tool to clean out your computer. They push moisture along with air so unless you have a refrigeration system or some other moisture removal system on your compressed air just use the stuff in the cans which only has some propellant moisture that rapidly evaporates.

      Around the 13:00 mark. Would it be beneficial to apply a small amount of glue between the small piece and long piece just at the joint? If a kick can shift a plank, my concern is that small piece could shift back under the quarter round and pulling that piece back might be difficult without damaging the installed trim.

    As always, your videos are informative and entertaining! I have been flipping houses for years and you are still the first one I go to for advice. Just last year, I watched your video on painting and it changed my painting world. Thanks to you and your crew for your outstanding presentations! FWIW, I started using my $60.00 HF wet tile saw, along, with a 4.5" carbide tipped wood blade, also available from HF, for all my laminate work. It's like a light and portable little table saw....I can keep it on the floor and drag it around the room with me. About 80% of the mess goes into the water tub. I would imagine if you put the blade hood on it would contain even more of the mess. I can do long cuts, crosscuts and even intricate cuts featherboard fashion or just scraping cuts along the side of the blade. Anyway...thought someone might find that useful. Thanks again!

    I was surpised to see the use of those small cuts at the walls. I've done most of the rooms in my home in laminate, and always planned out my layout to avoid using any boards less than 4 inches wide or 8 inches long. Most manufacturers suggest this. Also, having a pull bar and oscillating tool is a must in my opinion when doing laminate.

    Jeff, I've done this in my house. Great video!
    Personally, I've never liked the look of quarter-round. If the room is getting a make-over and a new floor... wouldn't you prefer to pull the old dented floor moulding and run the new floor under new trim? It doesn't add much to the cost of the project and with a fresh coat of paint on the walls, the entire room looks new. When I did my house, I painted the new trim outside on a sawhorse after it was cut to length with two coats of high-gloss white. For a modern-looking room, it's stunning the difference it makes! Cheers, my friend.

      I prefer to redo the whole room but not every situation requires that and a lot of people where wondering how to close the gap. In this old house the floors are quite sloped so new base would need a trim piece anyway!

In your "which brand of vinyl flooring is best" video you mentioned you still need an underpad even if the vinyl plank comes with it. In this video you seem to be conflicting with that information. Can you please clarify it? Thank you!

      I've done a lot of laminate over the years as a DIYer and it is a rally easy and satisfying project. It really transforms a room and doesn't require a lot of tools. If you do it yourself its really affordable and looks a lot nicer than old carpet or rolled vinyl.

    What sort of saw blade, other than the Diablo “Pergo blade,”would you recommend to use to cut laminate flooring on my 12” miter saw?

    • @aaronpage1822
      @aaronpage1822 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One that you dont plan on ever using for wood again. These types of floors destroy saw blades. I have been installing floors for years and have one blade for laminate. Can use a blade that doesn’t work so good on wood anymore, it will work great for laminate. I use my old table saw blades for these floors. Also I only use a table saw and jig saw

    • @Battle_Beard
      @Battle_Beard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aaronpage1822 Haha, wisdom. I ended up getting a Diablo 96 tooth “non-ferrous and laminate” blade for $60. Beats the 16 tooth Pergo blade for $100 that can literally only be used for laminate. I only have 450sqft of laminate to install so I figure I might have a prayer that the blade is of any use afterwards.

    GREAT video, thank-you, I relied on it heavily to do my first laminate project! One important thing though is never discussed, nor could I find anything on it anywhere else on TH-cam. If you trim your laminate to fit under the door jambs like he shows but still leave an expansion gap everywhere, and do the 30 degree end of the quarter round at the door jamb as he says, you will have a visible hole in the laminate right there at the end of the quarter round. You can actually see this hole in the video at 28:45. Looking down from above, especially with a lighter coloured laminate makes this hole all the more evident. What I finally came up with which seemed to work great is first, when you are cutting under the door jambs, allow yourself to cut at an angle into the end of your baseboard by the door jamb, like he describes at 22:28. Then after you've under cut the jamb, go with a narrow chisel (no wider than the thickness of your laminate) and carve out the bottom of the baseboard at the end at the same angle that you cut into the baseboard. That allows a space for your laminate to go under the end the baseboard, and when you install the quarter round, there is no hole showing in the laminate. You do have to do some careful jig saw work to make this fit just right, leaving a gap, but it can be done.

    28:02 Is there room for expansion under the door jamb? Is the board a little long? I think I've been leaving too much space under my door jambs and cutting the board to follow the angle of the molding. I'm going to have to rip them out so I'd like to know if this is too tight or if it's OK. Could this be a problem later? I know he said that in heated and cooled homes there isn't that much expansion and contraction, and I am installing during the summer. I do like the tighter look if it's safe to do. can anyone enlighten me?

    I am preparing for installation of vinyl plank flooring in the foyer and bathrooms where I attend church; after measuring, the flooring will be 1/16" higher than the threshold on a double door installation. I removed the threshold to find it was installed on 3/4" treated lumber material that appears to be ripped from 2x4s spanning two separately poured concrete slabs where the building was constructed and a porch poured on the front of the building. About 3/4 of the threshold is over the original slab. Looking forward to you suggestion

    Hello! I LOVE your videos, they’re so helpful! I’m getting ready to install vinyl flooring in my home, and wasn’t expecting all of the extra things to deal with (putting vinyl up against fireplaces and baseboard heaters, quarter round, etc). I’m wonderinggg- I know it’s probably not best- but would it be terrible if I just undercut my baseboard and left the 1/4 inch expansion gap under there? That way I wouldn’t have to put quarter round on? I’d just slide the vinyl right under the baseboard gap. (While leaving the 1/4 inch expansion gap) so essentially, couldn’t I just do the same thing I’d do for the door jam, but do it to all of the baseboards? It seems easier lol
