Hi Mark, Thanks for the video, can’t wait to see more of your videos when we’re all up and running again, keep you and your family safe, thanks again, pete👍
Hi Sean. Hope your keeping well. Getting back on those sidelines can’t come quick enough! There’s a SR name check in one of these videos, have you spotted it yet😉👍🏻
Thanks for your videos. I really like the fact that you are still using older camera. Many of the TH-cam video-/photography channels keep on hyping new cameras. You are prime example that great photos can be taken with older camera, even tough that camera is really a premium one and obviously your lenses are premium ones too.
Thanks Jonas. Yes, the mk1 DX’s are fine for me still. Ok, if I had plenty of money I may be shooting with newer kit but it wouldn’t give much better results when shooting in jpg! The 400 was 2nd hand too and does a brilliant on still! Thanks for watching Jonas👍🏻
Another great video Mark. You really have got a camera-friendly way of doing this. If you did photography workshops I'd be the first to book - I know there's so much to learn. I'm an experienced photographer, but if I were to attend a seminar/workshop about the techie bits of wiring out etc I'd go to you first. That aside, I bet you're like the rest of us, just dying to get back out there!
Ah thanks, very kind words there! I too am getting lots out of making these vlogs. They create lots off discussion which helps us all improve. Yes, 1 week on from my last trip outside, my hard drives are melting I've plugged them in so many times, looking through old sets! Keeps safe and thanks again for your support.
May I suggest putting a chapter list for the long videos like this one? I was really interested in what kind of remote trigger you use but I had to watch through the whole video. Not that it wasn't interesting but I was really interested in that one thing at the moment. Thanks.

Hi Mark, Yes it nikcan and keep safe but we don’t know if the lockdown will extend beyond Easter Sunday here in Ireland. Interesting to see what evolves over the next days and weeks. Football for men is due to restart on June the 19th and women’s football on 28th June in Ireland to tie in European football qualifiers but I honestly don’t see how any sports will take place in 2020. You might get good deals at Christmas time for new camera and lenses for the camera manufacturers wish to increase their financial performance results.

Hello Mark Thanks for the reply. I originally wanted to purchase the same lens you’ve got but due to budgeting I settled for a 300mm f2.8 IS Lens back in 2005. I’ve found that this is a great lens. A little awakened as I have a love/ hate with the focal length but I’ve used it with a 1.4 converter. A pro advised me in 2003 that a converter can slow the auto focus a bit, but I never found that to be true. I haven’t shot any sport since 2007 so I’m now a beginner & the videos you do are great help more than anything. I am taking the path as you did by shooting as many sports as possible & building a portfolio. I’m thinking of the Canon 200-400 f4 IS with a built in converter.
Great videos Mark ! If you could buy just one teleconverter, which one would you buy 1.4 or x2. Im shooting football, rugby and hopefully a little bit of cricket. Keep you and your's safe.
Ooh real tough Q that is Craig. I think I’d just edge to the x2, specially for cricket at the big grounds. I always use the x2 for dugout shots of managers too. Hope that helps👍🏻
Thanks Mark for the video, it was fun and informative. Nikon shooter and have my eye on a D5, just waiting for everything to return to normality. Keep safe as I hear the Old Dart has been hit quite hard and keep punching out these videos.

Mark, the Pocket Wizard remotes, which model do you suggest for doing the behind goal setup? Im planning on introducing the third camera to my kit, its an old 70D which i would link to my primary body being a 1DX3 while i have a 5D with shorter lens for closeups. Swapping it at half time to always be behind our opponents goal and to avoid damage from the kids that invade to pitch at half time for a kick.
Hi mark! Great video. Found you through the recommended section after watching sports photography videos. Gutting the footy is off. Hope you are well and things stay that way!
Another great video Mark.... I’m still in shock over the FA decision that season 2019-20 will end with immediate effect and all results expunged. The team I photograph in the Northern League Division 2 Redcar Athletic are sitting second, three points off the top. this decision is cruel and unfair on all those clubs involved... I bet the FA won’t expunge the top flight results and render their leagues null and void. Some people would say football doesn’t matter in the current climate we are experiencing but for some it’s a way of life and these people put everything into their football clubs and stand to lose out big style. What’s your thoughts on this.... Postpone football yes, focus on saving lives until it is safe to return to our normal way of life. Record books will say a season was void. Why shouldn’t we delay next season as it hasn’t started yet? Finish this one! Fair on all. Stay safe and take care.
Hi Trevor. Thanks for the support. Yes, I was really shocked that ALL Non League had been made void! Surely it has to be consistent across all levels of the game! I can still see The FA pulling the rest! Can’t see many teams agreeing to BCD games! Time will tell I guess!
I photograph team in Isthmian Premier league... second ... unbeaten in 2020 and top of form table... forward is top of the goals table... all equals nothing! frustrating for all involved. But lives matter before football. Agree they need to do one rule for whole pyramid from prem league to bottom
I was also shocked but not unexpected! I photograph for Atherton Collieries in the Northern Premier League. I suppose I should be relieved as we were sitting 2nd from bottom but had a few games in hand and had been picking up vital points before the lockdown.
Hi David. I’d expect they’ll be a decision coming soon on the rest of the football season. Surely it can’t be one rule for non-league and another for the rest! After all, it all starts in non-league surely! It will be interesting to see the outcome! Keep safe David👍🏻
Hello. I have just found your page. I’ve just bought a 1DX and looking to find out as much as I can. Your videos are fantastic. So informative and helpful. I wanted to know what lense to buy for zooming in. What would you recommend? I had a £90 lumix bridge and maxed it out with everything you can do on it. Went straight in the deep end and bought a 1DX and thought I will just learn from the top. Never owned a cannon before. So learning from the beginning. But I’m excited to start with an amazing camera. I need a macro lens and zoom lens. Thank you x
Hi Harlequin, thanks for watching and getting in touch. Great news on the 1Dx purchase. Are you going to use it for sport or general photography? I love my 70-200 so would highly recommend that lens. Also, the 100-400 Mkii is a great lens too, one which I am looking to purchase soon. Macro wise, my 100 f2.8 is great for product photography, so I’d recommend that too. Let me know how you get on👍🏻

May I ask(as I'm being a bit blonde :-) ) I have Nikon cameras(D4s & D5) and looking to get either the Pocket Wizard PW-PlusX-CE Plus or PW-Plus3E Plus IIIE.. Do I need to purchase anything else to use these with my cameras, like a receiver, or are the built in? Thank you Sir..
Thanks for watching Neil. All you’ll need is a cable to connect the wizard mounted on the remote body, that’s all. They’re both transceivers and receivers👍🏻
Hi Mark, just found your channel recently and am already a big fan. Your vids are super informative, your work is really appreciated! Random question related to shooting football, if you for some reason wanted to use flash photography during a game, would that be allowed??
Hi Dan, thanks for getting in touch and watching the videos. It is much appreciated. The only time I would put the flash on would be before or after the game if you needed a bit of extra light. Players arriving or capturing the manager in the dugout. And again, capturing the players getting back on the coach or leaving the football ground. It would be very frowned upon to use the flash during the game. That’s when F 2 .8 is a big bonus. Hope that helps Dan👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Hi Mark, thanks for the quick and informative reply! Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration for aspiring sports photographers such as myself!
Oh yes, no chance of flying in built up areas! I just enjoy capturing landscapes and seeing different angles ground level. Sunsets from a high are great to capture. Stay safe NikCan
Just watching again and I then wondering would the SSD portable drives be better suited. Just in case you get a stray ball hitting one of the portable drives and it falls to the ground and you can’t remove its contents?
Mark Kerton I was talking about the external hard drives not the card reader. Better going with ssd aka solid state hard drives as they have no moving parts and if they fall to the ground or hit by an object like a ball they will cause no damage as there are no moving parts. The ssd drives are similar to the SSD drives in your laptop while the older or basic laptops have the cheaper moving drives Information in the normal external hard drives the heads are a spinning disc and then won't be able to get the information off the disks.
Mark Kerton ssd drives a bit more expensive but the security of knowing your contents are more robust is pricelss. You could Buy an internal ssd nvme m.2 drive of the largest size you require and an external waterproof nvme m.2 case with type C/ usb 3 connections sometimes is a lot cheaper than the shop ready models.
Hi Mark , When you purchase your 1DX's do you buy new or do you buy second hand and what do you look for in terms of the frame count . Also when you had a new case put on the water damaged 1DX , can I ask the cost .
Hi. I buy new bodies as a rule. My bodies are 3 years old now and have approx 250,000 actuations. I'd say a 2nd hand body with 50-100,000 actuations would be fine if it looks in good condition still. The new rubber covers all together were around £200. Hope that helps.
Hi Steffan. Overall a great body. Just struggles a bit in low light conditions or obviously dark games, producing noisy images above say iso3200! The crop is handy on it for cricket though👍🏻
Hi Dipu. I wish it was that simple. Right now I have to be realistic with budget! I don’t NEED a mkiii just yet plus I think a mkii will be a good upgrade from the mki as and when things get moving again👍🏻

Mark Kerton shooting football 90% of the time. But will definitively looking to other sports as I also watched your video on building portfolio, also very useful too 😁
Good to get as many different sports in your portfolio as possible Pedro👍🏻 Keep in touch and let us know how you get on
great video
Thanks Richard. 2021’s kit list this week I think👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Great I’ll be looking forward to it. Picking up a stool haven’t seen them used in the US. Several other items put on my wish list on Amazon so I don’t forget like the mini tripod which I might buy for travel not sure since I already have 4.
Nice review Mark!
Thanks Chris👍🏻
Great stuff Mark.
Thanks Mr T. Hope your keeping safe👍🏻
Mark Kerton yes thanks mate
Can please you do a review on the Canon 400mm 2.8 lens? There are very few of them online. Especially of the Mark I version.
I’ll look into it Jesse👍🏻
Cheers Mark
Your welcome! Thanks for your support.
Quality video Mark! Shame about those griff gear shades - been trying to find one for about a year with no such luck haha
Thanks James. I'm pleased I included the shades as it was brought to my attention that there is a new company producing them now. Try WooShades www.wooshades.com.au/
Hi Andrew. Mine were PW3’s👍🏻
Hi mark! Great video. Found you through the recommended section after watching sports photography videos. Gutting the footy is off. Hope you are well and things stay that way!
Hi Daniel. Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, it's a strange time right now isn't it! Do you shoot Sport?
@@MarkKerton Yes i do. Ive been shooting for a non league football team near Portsmouth for a while. Really miss it. Hope things clear up quickly!
Ah great Daniel. I’m just down the road near Lymington, small world!
@@MarkKerton I know where that is! Went there on a school trip a few years ago- lovely little place! Great bakery in the town center too
It’s a lovely town Daniel yes. Nice tea rooms and coffee shops. Some nice photography to be had in the harbour area on a nice lit day.
Tommy something will happen fairly soon I’m sure! They’ll be a lot of pressure in the FA now after this decision!
Let me know how you get on👍🏻
@@MarkKerton thank you so much for your help. I only bought it yesterday. So looking to change career direction. So not sure what Direction to go into yet. I am going to start taking as many different subjects and see where I can grow and enjoy. I have A1 size printer and a Mac so possibilities are endless. But I know it’s the best decision I have made. I love your channel. You’re information is really great. Thank you so much :)
Exciting times ahead then Harlequin, brill. I spotted you joined our fb group too so it would be great to see some of your shots once you’ve had the 1Dx out. Thanks again for your support and catch up soon👍🏻
Mark, great watching your videos and looking forward more..
May I ask(as I'm being a bit blonde :-) )
I have Nikon cameras(D4s & D5) and looking to get either the Pocket Wizard PW-PlusX-CE Plus or PW-Plus3E Plus IIIE..
@@MarkKerton Thank you very much for taking the time to reply Mark.. Best Wishes & Stay Safe..
Anytime Neil👍🏻
@@danoconnor1536 Anytime Dan👍🏻
Its very restricted here in Ireland with drones at stadia so I don't bother owning a drone.
Oh yes, no chance of flying in built up areas! I just enjoy capturing landscapes and seeing different angles ground level. Sunsets from a high are great to capture. Stay safe NikCan
Canon ef 400 2.8 without is? Thanks👍🏻
Thanks for watching👍🏻
Just watching again and I then wondering would the SSD portable drives be better suited. Just in case you get a stray ball hitting one of the portable drives and it falls to the ground and you can’t remove its contents?
You mean the card readers NikCan?
Mark Kerton I was talking about the external hard drives not the card reader. Better going with ssd aka solid state hard drives as they have no moving parts and if they fall to the ground or hit by an object like a ball they will cause no damage as there are no moving parts. The ssd drives are similar to the SSD drives in your laptop while the older or basic laptops have the cheaper moving drives Information in the normal external hard drives the heads are a spinning disc and then won't be able to get the information off the disks.
Got ya NIkCan. They all stay at home as a rule but your right, I ought to grab some SSD’s👍🏻
Thanks Mark , I am enjoying the EosR for Portraits and more , but I need to get some thing faster , so I have decided to look for a 1DX .
@@MarkKerton I thought you had a totally new body replacement .
A Photographer in Thailand no just the rubber panels👍🏻
How do you get those bodies, I have been trying to get one for years.
Hi Hassan. Do you mean a mk1 body? I bought these new 5 yrs ago now. There are some on ebay now and again.
I was thinking about a 7D myself for a third body what do you think
Hi Steffan. Overall a great body. Just struggles a bit in low light conditions or obviously dark games, producing noisy images above say iso3200! The crop is handy on it for cricket though👍🏻
@@MarkKerton this will only be for wide angle shots and starbursts
@@MarkKerton will it be fine for the PL grounds because that will be when I use it most
Why don't you buy mark 3???
Hi Dipu. I wish it was that simple. Right now I have to be realistic with budget! I don’t NEED a mkiii just yet plus I think a mkii will be a good upgrade from the mki as and when things get moving again👍🏻
Sir what is the total Cost of this equipments?
Did you do any course of sports photography?
Hi Joel. I’d say I’ve spent around £20,000 approx! A big investment. I
No training, totally self taught👍🏻 Thanks for watching.
@@MarkKerton Did I need any certificate to became sports photographer and join premier league
You will need to work for an agency to shoot football👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Sir do u know some?
Lots of agents online. Do you live in the uk?
Hi Mark, How old were you when you got into sports photography?
Hi Leo. Not too long ago. I joined my first sports agency in 2014! Obviously I first picked up a camera in my teenage years and have worked in photography since 1997ish. What do you shoot at the moment?
Mark Kerton I shoot sports, events and performing arts at the moment
Nice one Leo. Keep at it👍🏻
He trades as instagram.com/wooshades/ now Mark
Ah many thanks for the link. I did pop a link in the description but I don't think it works anymore!? Brilliant, appreciate that.
