Very cool, I really liked hearing how you went from "clicks" to "what is missing", I think that's hard to do! You pointed me in the right direction, don't hesitate to do more of these videos!
Lemme give you some insider information. It's only been 2 weeks and we need more data to be sure about any changes, but so far the conversion rate is up to 2.9%! definitely a significant improvement!
@@charlimarieTV That increase is dramatic. However, will data now be skewed by traffic coming from this video? Or can you account for that and treat it separately? Either way prior to this I'd assumed such analysis was only worthwhile for big business.... but I was wrong. Thanks so much. Its a great demonstration.... and I didn't know hotjar either.
This was so beneficial. I have just added HotJar to a company website to get this user data. It was nice to see the changes you made from the data collated. Great video
Really love the new header. Think it makes your font the star and focus, the previous image behind pulled focus away and diluted impact. Grayscale purchased!
I really appreciate these videos. I teach this as part of my CS I class and the kids have always enjoyed web dev. Thanks for providing a lot of good content! It's really helped them build some good creative and technical skills.
Absolutely love this episode! 🙌🏼 How you are showing how to improve conversions. Also, funny enough, I was one of those clicking where you put “learn more” now 🤣
I love that you documented this. Also a suggestion, maybe next time only test one thing at a time. That way you can track exactly which changes made the most difference. I can guess what probably made the most difference though, adding the Unique value proposition. :) Copy/messaging is VERY important. I'd say, don't launch anything without first having that in place. Can't wait to see more of these type of videos from you.
Great call out! If I was running an actual test I would totally do that. But unfortunately this page on my site doesn’t get enough traffic so it would take a loooong time to reach statistical significance with a test.
Thanks for talking us through hotjar. Consider me sold! Another tip regarding your pricing model. Try employing the 'decoy effect'. I'd recommend your standard offering remain the same, your regular would be the extended, for up to 10 projects, and your extended would be for unlimited projects at a higher price. You'll find most go for the regular option, but you'll likely see an increased conversation rate.
This was really useful thank you, lots of interesting take always to think about!🧐🧐 Do you think that on mobile conversion is less because fonts are commonly used and downloaded on desktop? I personally buy on desktop to simplify the download and install process but browse on my phone for ones I like the look of.😃
dang Will that is SUCH a great point I didn't even think about that! I think you could definitely be right. I'm going to add a note to the page on mobile that the download will be emailed to them so that they don't worry about having to do it later on their computer.
Great video. Thank you. What tool/software are you using in this video for the web site design? You were able to quickly switch between web and mobile.
I don't really do software reviews (I'm not good at software testing), I only make videos about the tools I use personally. I've never heard of Mouseflow before but it looks interesting!
Nice video, makes me miss that kind of work! Just a thought: how about a segmented control for the standard/extended tabs on mobile? It would give more the idea of switching tabs and content I think. Maybe it performs fine, but again, just a thought 😀
Such a useful video! I have a question about the session recordings. Since you use the tool at your work, how many videos do you go through on average to find insights?
Ahhhh we need to be doing this kind of analytics on ooux.com soooo bad. Thanks so much for the video. Super helpful and motivational. Loved your insights, especially when you noticed how people were repeatedly clicking STORE. Users were expecting a list of products and they ended up on a product detail. How did you change the nav? Did I miss that?
@@charlimarieTV OMG YES!!! Haha, but maybe too embarrassing! We are not even looking at google analytics at this point. Let us fix some low hanging fruit first...goal: collab with you this summer to plug in hotjar and analyze!! Let's do it! Oh, and I would simple rename your nav item to "Grayscale Font" or just "Font" until you have a product listing page? Or, create a product listing page with the 1 item listed and a "more products coming soon" messaging? (And for the record, this is SUCH a common thing...us designers conflating 1 OBJECT with a LIST of objects. I did this on Rewiredux.com for a min... I had a "services" tab...that went to the detail of the 1 service. 🤦♀️)
Hi Charlie, Have you seen the recent (last year) release of Microsoft Clarity? It does much of what HotJar does (heatmapping and session recording) and is a good companion to Google Analytics on a website. Most importantly, it's free.
I've used Hotjar before on my Wordpress sites and the only problem found was that it considerably slowed down the load time of the site. Is that true for Webflow sites?
Interesting! How long ago was that? The ConvertKit website is a Wordpress site and we're very conscious of the site speed with it, we found the impact of implementing Hotjar to be extremely minimal when we added it recently. I wonder if the Hotjar team has made improvements to the weight of the code since you last tried it out?
@@charlimarieTV This was about two years ago, so I'm guessing there have been a few updates since then? Thanks for the video by the way, very interesting!

The site doesn't notify/ask for cookie permission to record heatmaps. I like your content, but don't like the fact that there's complete disregard to online privacy for the sake of achieving business/monetary goals. It shouldn't take a compulsory law to make people ask permission to record mouse, scroll, and clicks. Sure one could argue that the recorded data is anonymous and non-personally-identifiable, but just the fact that it's being recorded without even asking for permission is what's wrong about it. Modern marketing and these software companies have normalised it to an extent as if it doesn't even matter. Please consider this Charlie
I hear you, but I fail to see how this is a breach of privacy. Any user-inputted data is blocked from the recordings and the data is anonymized so it cannot be tied to an individual. Privacy is definitely important to me, that's why I use Fathom analytics on my personal site instead of Google because, just like this Hotjar data, it reports in aggregate and the data is anonymized.
I can see how even though it isn't actually a breach of privacy, it could FEEL like it is to know that your page clicks etc were being recorded. but yes, there's nothing to connect that session to an individual.
1st, even with cookies that aren't collecting identifying information, you need to still collect consent before the cookie is set unless the cookie is necessary for functionality (which HotJar is not). So even just informing about the cookie being set is not enough, you need to make sure the cookie is only set after the user clicks accept (or, depending on your cookie consent solution, selects the category they consent to) 2nd according to HotJar themselves, even if the information is anonymous, you still have to inform about your use of HotJar in your privacy policy - which I cannot find on your website.
and thanks for calling out the consent, in reading the documentation I believed it wasn't necessary because no data was tracked in the cookie. I will investigate that further
I have completely gone against using HotJar or UserZoom or any of these activity trackers as it's a real invasion of privacy. I know that a few years down the road, this will cause massive issues for developers who use these tools. Once the mainstream start finding out that their activity is basically recorded in real time, not just what they click and search for, but actual page activity they are going to flip
