“People Are Being Fined Despite Having Compliant Vehicles” | Conservative MP Slams ULEZ Fiasco

  • Sadiq Khan is reportedly issuing more than £700,000 worth of ULEZ fines daily, including for cars considered pollution-compliant.
The latest official figures show 3,944 fines were issued daily for breaching emissions rules in June.
Conservative MP Gareth Bacon hits out at Sadiq Khan for burdening people with ULEZ charge during the cost of living crisis.
“Ninety per cent of cameras in my local borough have been dismantled or destroyed, and that speaks volumes” of people’s frustration, he says.

The government charges motorist a road tax. Once the tax is paid you are entitled to drive on the nation's roads. The tax is calculated on the vehicles emissions the more you emit the more you pay. To then allow local governments to charge another tax calculated on the vehicles' emissions is obscene. Will the government give a rebate for every ULEZ fine paid? The whole system is immoral. My worry is they will soon have to tax low emission vehicles and electric vehicles - they need the revenue stream. Will we all have to pay further taxes on electricity used for charging vehicles - will this wash over onto normal household electric usage?

What a lot of people don't realise that air pollution can be higher in the home when cooking in the kitchen than outside in the street.
I have an air monitor that can measure the amount of particles in the air. Normally my air contains 5µg/m³ (5 micrograms per cubic metre) of particles in the living room. One microgram is a millionth part of a gram.
When cooking anything in the kitchen, especially anything that is liable to burn such as toast, roasting joints of meat, frying bacon, sausage, etc, the amount of particles in the air can rise upto 200µg/m³. My air monitor is 30 feet from away from the kitchen. It's in the living room. So when air quality in the street is said to be as high as 40µg/m³ its still a very low pollution level. So the ULEZ expansion scheme is basically an excuse for raising money. Its a scam.

  • @spotastar

Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce toxic air by expanding the ULEZ to greater London will not work.
He doesn’t really care about toxic air quality and here is why:
    - He has already made the toxic air far worse since he has introduced the LTN’s which have increased the toxic air on the main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no other alternatives, especially during rush hour. The roads are now grid locked with traffic moving at walking pace and the fumes are getting denser and not dispersing. LTN’s need to be reopened as it is causing more damage than good.
Among all this, the mileage in vehicles has also increased due to the fact that we are forced to go the long way round to get to the required destination - all accumulating to even more emission being emitted! Bravo Sadiq & team.
    - The health for pedestrians and children as they walk along these main routes to get to stations, schools, shops is deteriorating. Even the drivers inhale more fumes when we are stuck in stationary traffic. This is really aggravating and makes no sense!
    - Cycle Lanes: Should not be taking up an extra lane of the roads, large pavements could be divided into two for cyclists.
    - The introductions of 20MPH roads are also a problem because emission fumes don’t disperse quickly and the air is getting even more polluted because of the need to drive in lower gears.
Sadiq’s statement: “It is to reduce toxic air pollution” is clearly not accurate and is making matters worse. The situation is getting extremely out of hand and something needs to be done to stop him from ruining our climate even more. He should resign and Londoners should vote for someone who will make London a greater and more desirable place to live in. There needs to be a more logical and strategic plan that is well thought.
    Vinnie Lauda
