The Reality Problem: Can Science Become Enlightened? - Deepak Chopra

    Science goes where reality leads it, but what happens when reality itself comes under question? Since the quantum revolution over a century ago, the solid, tangible nature of reality has been undermined. Scientists were faced with three linked mysteries that are only now being seen as inseparably linked:
    What is the nature of the universe?
    What is the nature of consciousness?
    What is the origin of both the universe and consciousness?
    The era has ended when consciousness and the universe could be treated as separate and unrelated. Once accepted as independent, material reality depends on observation - the “measurement problem” in quantum mechanics. At the same time, mind/consciousness/awareness can no longer be considered epiphenomenal, a complex product of brain processes having no bearing on reality.
    On the way to making the case for “consciousness first,” the following issues will be considered:
    Can exploring consciousness through spiritual methodologies lead to some of the same insights as science?
    Can the conscious observer and ‘self’ be understood through introspection - self awareness, self reflection, transcendence, and conscious choice making and intentional self - observation?
    Is there a difference between perceptual experience and fundamental reality?
    Where do consciousness and conscious experience occur?
    In Vedanta, reality changes as consciousness expands. What brain states in neuroscience correlate with different states of consciousness?
    Enlightenment or nondual awareness also referred to as liberation (moksha), has been the ultimate goal of life in Vedanta. How does this state of unity bear upon modern science?

    I wonder why people who don't like what Deepak says bother to spend so much of their time viewing these videos and commenting/endlessly criticizing him. Having heard this talk, is one of the things that I am most grateful for, today

      +Roy S he is just exposing "modern (moron) science". So called modern science before studying the bigger universe, should try and explain how a three dimensional reality is visible when light passes through 4 mm pupil of eye.

    Awesome video! its about time we have someone in science speaking the truth. Once everyone learns this and accepts this we will be living in a much peaceful world. It starts within.. You are creating this reality.

    It's all happening deepak.. the quantum worlds are in full swing right now.... but where to next? how are we going to salvage this situation? is there a way to use science to produce or uncover a sufficiently reliable and safe technology that is capable of facilitating higher activations of energy/awareness in human beings? isn't this what we need?

      +Kris Driver time exists within material realm in the presence of observer (atman or consciousness) in everyone (living and non living). So we can't be just complex machines, because there is an " I " in the machine that experiences all that. But what if we could build a very complex machine, as smart as a human, but still just a machine. A kind of very advanced artificial intelligence that we can speak with. Then we ask it, "do you have an " I " that experiences things ? " what kind of observation should this machine make to draw the conclusion that no, it does not have an observer ? How could any intelligent thing answer anything else than yes to this question, provided it is smart enough to understand the sentence ? The answer is always yes, whether you are a machine or a living thing, hence the conclusion that living things are just (very complex and beautiful) machines. I think we say there is an observer because we are able to perceive our thinking process as it is happening, we are able to not only perceive things but also observe the act of perceiving. I think it is only that that makes us think there is an " I ". But this again is just a matter of brain circuitry. A machine would be able to do that too, provided it's " brain" is wired the same way.

    While I personally tend to agree w/ much of Chopra's cosmology, it seems to me 'rationally' to be mostly assertions that he presents in that regard, or philosophical argument. It may have value promoting a bridging science & spirituality but is not especially convincing. In particular the amazing work w/ brain & medicine & lifestyle seems grafted onto the philosophical claim in an unnecessary way.

    CONSCIOUSNESS IS A PRODUCT OF MATTER OR THE CONTRARY IS TRUE?
    Scientists believe that consciousness is a product of matter and spiritualists believe that matter is a product of consciousness; both concepts are false.
    Everything that exists and the universe as a totality is υλο-ενέργεια (matter-energy), intelligence and consciousness; these three are the three main aspects of one 'thing', one 'entity', one 'life', call it as you like. Each one of them is not a product of the other. They are the three aspects of ONE REALITY. Where there is υλο-ενέργεια there are also intelligence and consciousness. Where there is consciousness there is intelligence and υλο-ενέργεια. Where there intelligence there υλο-ενέργεια and consciousness.
    These three are one and are eternal, immortal, timeless.
    What is not eternal are the forms that υλο-ενέργεια assumes in the eternal dance of life. The intelligence interacts with υλο-ενέργεια and creates infinite forms and beings. They appear for some time unfold some of the infinite possibilities of life and then disappear.
    Thus each human being is υλο-ενέργεια (matter-energy), intelligence and consciousness.
    The problem is that human beings believe and imagine that they are the bodies while in reality are also intelligence and consciousness.
    Thus they live according the needs of their body and the senses. Ignore the higher or more subtle aspects of their existence and thus suffer from various mental disorders which are developed in them due to this ignorance.

    Mr. Chopra What you call as outside it is only your mind. All these forms apparently external are not in your mind, they are your mind. All there is in the room and audience you see it is your mind itself.
    Your body also is your mind. All is mind-Matrix

    • @tootroo5587
      @tootroo5587 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WahresSelbst Nice. But what you experienced is quite natural and is called transcending -or going beyond the confines of mind and body. This was your real eternal self that you experienced..without a body.. it is beyond time and space. Its quite a common experience for those who do TM meditation, which I've practiced for over 10 years.

    I have only watched a few minutes, so this comment is not about the overall speech, just a tiny little point. Just after the 7 minute mark, Deepak asks "What's the most common word in any language?" and then says "I" with a sort of gesture and emphasis like that is such an obvious fact and the significance will soon become clear. But it's not a fact, "the" is always listed as the most common word in the English language. I don't know what significance it might have, this is just a fact-check like a spell-check red squiggle. I mean no disrespect.

      'I' is the most important

    • @wahresselbst5044
      @wahresselbst5044 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Leibman "the" doesn´t mean anything. It points only to something.

    • @michaelleibman5189
      @michaelleibman5189 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WahresSelbst Well, it points to some "thing", towards objectivity, which is the opposite of the subjectivity that the "I" was supposed to refer to, the whole crux of the issue.
