    Is it wrong to hold them closer to the middle? Mine are very thin so thicker chopsticks may be easier to hold near the end.

    I heard crossing your chopsticks is bad luck. Is that true? I see many food bloggers not from Asia (mostly from the States) take photos of their Asian-inspired dishes with crossed chopsticks for decorative purposes.

    • @vinhkhoa5112
      @vinhkhoa5112 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Memoria James Actually, crossing the chopstick give the feeling of untidy, so we rarely do it. That's not a taboo but you shouldn't do it.
      BTW, put the chopsticks parallel on the bowls is a sign of "finished the meal". In some restaurant, they might automatically get and clean your bowls even you haven't finished it. :)

    there are also other "chopstick taboos" that are aside from the video and not explained, i will explain some of the taboo things you should not do:
    1. sashibashi (刺し箸)--- using chopsticks as knife and fork
    we understand sometimes food can be difficult to pick up by using chopsticks, but nevertheless, you should not stab or cut your food with chopsticks even if it is convenient. most importantly, sticking your chopsticks in food is improper.
    2. mayoibashi (迷い箸)--- hovering your chopsticks over the food to decide what to eat first
    when the whole table of food seems delicious to you, you may need to wonder what to eat first. but however, hovering your chopsticks around the dishes makes others think that you are a greedy person!
    3. mogibashi (もぎ箸)--- when the tip of the chopstick gets dirty with food, you lick the tip of the chopstick to get the chopstick clean.
    this really makes others to have weird thinking about you. licking the chopstick is kind of gross. so when the chopstick get dirty. it is better to ask the waiter to get you a new pair.
    4. tatakibashi (叩き箸)--- using chopsticks as drumsticks to hit the dishes
    tapping or hitting dishes with chopsticks is not only annoying but also discourteous to others. your chopsticks are not drumsticks so you should avoid doing this type of behavior.
    5. also sashibashi but different (指し箸)--- pointing at others with chopsticks
    pointing at others with chopsticks is extremely taboo, it is impolite and sometimes can be considered an insult. it can easily ruin relationship in a business setting. so avoid doing it at any cost.
    avoid doing all of this "chopstick taboo", you can be able to have good manners with chopsticks and others won't cost problems to you. if you have these bad manners. stop doing the now! change your behaviors and be the successful yourself!!!

    I watch a lot of Japanese television. I have seen people hold and use chopsticks in a couple different ways. Is there one overall proper way? If so, would it be possible for you to create a video where you are actually using the chopsticks? On a side note I have tried the method shown in your illustration so many times, but I cannot get the points of the two to meet. Also, the bottom chopstick never continues resting on the 4th finger. I have read that some people just do not have the manual dexterity to use chopsticks properly. Perhaps I am one of those and should just continue using them in my goofy way.
