I made about five batches with a few fails, I just couldn't get the consistency right. However, last night I made a batch using a gallon of milk and Fage' yogurt and set it for 9 hours, PERFECT! Now I have to figure out how many people I can give some of it to since I live alone. :). Thank you so much.
I used to muck about with coffee filters, nut milk bags, cheese cloth and tea towels. I almost threw in the towel altogether on homemade yogurt. I finally splurged and bought a gallon size yogurt strainer from Amazon. Best. Purchase. Ever. Seriously. No more precious time, energy or yogurt wasted. Perfect yogurt every time, easy to get out and easy to clean. No whey spillage anywhere. Zero waste. All in one container in the fridge or kitchen counter while it strains. I cannot recommend it enough!
I am using the “a2” whole milk and cooking it for 36.5 hrs in the insta-pot, comes out really creamy and rich after straining. Cooking it longer will make it more tart but will have a higher concentration of “good bacteria “
Thank you for this video. I’m in the process of making my very first batch of Greek yogurt as it is still in the oven at just eight hours. I’m ready to go to bed, but I feel confident that when I get up at six it will be ready to be strained. As I watched you wrestle those little coffee filters, I had a thought that might be helpful. I don’t know. My thought is what if you wet each of the filters down so they were fairly sopping? My husband. makes his own coffee using those kinds of filters and puts them in a pour over cup. When he wets them, they stick to the glass cup. So I’m thinking if you were yours, you can get them to at least stand up on the sides and hold against the edges of the rim of the strainer. I’d really be interested to hear what you say about that. Thank you.
Made my first batch of yogurt yesterday but almost threw it out because the straining process with a cheesecloth got really messy. I decided to use coffee filters and woke up this morning to some delicious Greek yogurt. I would definitely validate that the Instant Pot works and use coffee filters to strain. No mess or hassle whatsoever. For my next batch, I will try using the Fairlife Milk so no straining is needed. Thank you for this video
Thanks for the demonstration. I'm very pumped about trying it. Wish the audio had held up; super important to one who is hearing impaired, cause it became a super strain to try to discern from that point.
I have been straining yogurt with an used yogurt container with small holes drilled at the bottom. I put a couple of layers of cheesecloth at the bottom of the container. Container has a lid. Works great. I will try the coffee filters. The cheesecloth may work better for the large batches you are straining.
You can also use muslin cloth to strain your yogurt instead of the coffee filters. U can also tie the cloth and hang so it drains over a sink. Or if u want to use the whey put a bowl under it.
I use to do it that way. After it cools and you put the starter in I put it into jars with lids, put a grate in the bottom of my instant pot with 1 or 2 cups of water, then put my jars in and process that way for 24 hours. That way everything is solid and thick, no need for straining. I'm going to experiment with two clear glass 6"X 3" vases with stretch lids and stack those in my 8 qt. Instant pot and switch them in 12 hours, because I don't like washing all those little jars, like I did it before.
Hi Daniel, Perhaps I am being 'daft', but could you explain your process? I think I understand, but want to be sure. Is it: (1) process in instant pot (2) cool (3) add starter (4) put into jars with lids (5) add 1-2 c of water to instant pot, put in grate and place jars with lids on grate and....not sure after that or why straining is no longer an issue. Many thanks, in advance, for your patience and help.
@@jediorion1124 No, haven't tried it yet. I'm not clear about the process and haven't had time to experiment on this yet. Making all kinds of other things though: homemade face shield for grocery shopping, homemade pizza dough, all sorts of Indian recipes/cooking, homemade disinfectant, ...... I've tried more new ways of doing things in the past 3 months than I probably have in the past decade. :-). Thank you so much. I just made my first bath and was wondering how to thicken it up. I’ve already got a lot of whey and am going to look up recipes for that. This is super simple and so much cleaner than trying to use cheese cloth. 🙌🏽
Each patch turns out a little different. The longer you strain the thicker it gets. I know the Ultra pasteurized milk tends to get thicker results. Just depends what milk you want to use.
I have the crockpot express but I’m going to do this. It has a yogurt setting. I’m super excited. Thank you for the video. I was going to do this back in March and I got busy with life and am just getting to it. Thanks again.
Excellent! Thank you for the video. I'm getting ready to strain my very first IP made yogurt. My mom's made it twice and her's was so delicious, I just had to give it a go. Just had to learn how to strain the whey out of it! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for the video! I am in the process of making my first batch right now with my instant pot ultra. I was at odds about how to strain it and this just made it so much simpler for me because the strainming yoghurt bag that I have coming is it going to be here on time 😂
Hi. Thank you for this video. Does the long-term cooking in the Instant Pot kill all the probiotics in the yogurt? If it does, how can I make yogurt with thousands of good bacteria, etc,?
The only reason to strain the yogurt is to get a thicker consistency. You can buy Greek yogurt that is thicker, but I prefer to make my own when I can.
Yogurt is yogurt and has no nationality. However, if we are going to attribute a nationality, we can say Turkish yogurt. The Greeks learned to make yogurt from the Turks while wearing skirts and burning turkish village.

I volunteer to receive some! I just like to be helpful like that. 😂
I use 6-10 gal of milk each month to make Greek yogurt just for myself. Helped me lose 100 lbs. So filling and low calorie.
The secret is to reuse the bacterial colony from the previous batch until you get a good one. In my experience it gets good at the 3rd batch.
If you get the coffee filters a bit wet they will mold and stay in place very very well

If you brown a ground beef mixture.. and add spinach and scramble eggs in it..and stir in plain yogurt it’s amazing! (Turkish)

Wonderful!
Why would you not strain Fairlife ? Just curious . I thought the straining was to thicken or for Keto to remove the carbs
I use Fairlife and always strain . Mainly to get the sugars out and also to thicken

Hi. Thank you for this video. Does the long-term cooking in the Instant Pot kill all the probiotics in the yogurt? If it does, how can I make yogurt with thousands of good bacteria, etc,?
You're not actually cooking it. It is just on the yogurt setting which makes it a incubator for the bacteria to grow.
@@JanHowell THANK YOU! It's my first time making yogurt in an Instant Pot but now I understand.
I just use a flour sack towel :)
That's a nice reusable option. Me too.
I use paper towel (the “like cloth” one).
I use a freshly washed pair of boxer shorts. The white one, not the blue one
Wow it is very practical. 🙏 thank you
You are so welcom
I have been using a gold Krups filter - I have two. Then I turn it upside down and it taps right out.

@@JanHowell Is a thicker consistency the only difference between "Greek" and 'regular' yogurt?
I do 16 hours.
Was the yogurt cold from fridge?
Yes
If I buy organic milk do you think it's cheaper to make yogurt than buy it?
probably is, but why organic?
How long can you store homemade greek yoghurt in the refrigerator?
Up to two weeks. I'm going to be posting a new Instant Pot yogurt tutorial next. Stay tuned!
they say up to 2 weeks
more like up to a month, it's good until it smells bad
How long does it last?
Your homemade yogurt is generally good for eating for up to 2 weeks when stored in the refrigerator.
@@JanHowell thanks!
Ma'am I love you
Cheesecloth is easier. Need a few layers

Just ditch the nut bag and use a cheesecloth. Problem solved.
thanks for sharing, never tried it.

Every ancient culture has figured out yogurt. It's like bread in that way.
Did she call it an insta pot? Hard for me to watch and consider someone an expert if they can’t even pronounce the name of the machine she’s using
