I was born decades after this was shot and only saw it 2 months ago for the first time. I was SO hooked on these songs, including opening Bye Bye Birdie, and then "One Boy", and "One last kiss". Man, it's like that THING that's missing in today's music.
Because they were innocent. Back in those 'Good Ol Days'! My mom, God rest her soul, told me once that she thought she grew up during the greatest time! Mid-50's. Elvis just came on the scene. And Rock and Roll began! Plus? Who can arguue the 55, 56, and 57 Chevy's were NOT the greatest cars eh?
Oh, man I totally agree with you! When he shows up in his gold suit & shoes and starts singing, snarling, and flipping his hair back, I completely lose it! Funniest scene in the show! I don't think Elvis could have done any better! Besides, I read that when Elvis and Anne met, sparks didn't immediately fly. Conrad made her faint during their first encounter!
No way, best line is...Paul Lynde says "Kids today, no respect, no respect!!" his kid says "I respect ya pappa!"... Lynde retorts with a sneer..."I don't want your respect"
or..Conrad says "I'm getting all tense", the old bag replies "us troopers we get all tense you know, hey Conrad how bout you and I go for a ride in the country?" Conrad looks at Dick and says "Man I hope I never get that tense!"
I just watched it last night and it's funny for ANY time period! Definitely a great movie to watch with the whole family. Thanks for sharing this fantastic song!
@@KatharineDalton-xv5ud It was easy and a way to let her know. A discussion starter if you will. These days it a mine field and marriage is at an all time low. Take your pick.
@@casetheace8494 no it isn't. Because it's 1.20 minutes long. People back then knew how to make song non-boring (compare this to today's radio hits that drag for 5-7 minutes).
@@Korn1holio idk how anyone can stand the radio hits. Music is still great today. You just have to go to the indie section. I know quite a number of artists who keeps the old timey sound.
"Conrad, honey, why don't you and I go for a nice ride in the country?" "Uh-uh. Man, I hope I never get that tense." HAHAHA! Best line. I love Maureen Stapleton. I thought she and Paul Lynde gave the best performances in this movie.
I love how you could here Maureen coming a mile away in her gum soled shoes. She was a hoot! And as for Paul Lynde...he was hysterically funny in anything he was in. From Uncle Arthur in "Bewitched" to sitting in the center square in"Hollywood Squares" he was over the top! R.I.P. Paul.
Of course Rydell was a bigger star. Jesse Pearson's career never really took off despite his sexy good looks and nice singing voice. He died at 49 in 1979. He went home to Louisiana with his hood "friend" and died at his mother's house.
Neither one was great looking. Also Bobby Rydell had a crush on Ann Margaret. She was going to be introduced to the Kennedy's and he lied to her as she wanted her parents with her. He informed her the Kennedy invite was for both of them not her choice to invite her parents. She believed him & too late found out that wasn't true. Also, originally, the part of Conrad was meant for Elvis Presley but he did not want to do the role. Jesse Pearson had guest starred on The Andy Griffith Show.
I remember seeing the film when I was 13, but I didn't realise that it was based on a stage musical. I remember it was very colourful and hugely enjoyable
+Esperanza Quebec I always felt like the movie was poking fun at the Elvis-inspired teeny bopper fandom, which would reach another level with the Beatles. And also having some fun with the conservative older generation having a tough time adjusting to the changing culture.
Me...Eastlake, Ohio, 15 miles east of Cleveland. We were there in easy walking distance from Lake Erie. Lots of baseball, fishing, hiking in the woods, and I have a Red Fender Jazzmaster just like the guy on the left. Our band played in the gymnasium at Eastlake North High School.
Yes! We played many teen town shows, and gigs at the junior high and high school. The first band I played in was back in 1964. This is 2019 and John the drummer, my brother Grant guitar/bass, and myself guitar are still playing together! You can see us on TH-cam. Videos are posted for The Picknicks. "Ramrod", "Upturn", "Blue Skies" and others are here. You can see me playing with The Ventures on "Moon Dawg", and "Chevy 396". Those are probably some of the best videos of us on TH-cam.
I looked it up and Jesse Pearson was 6'3". Bobby Rydell (Hugo) was short and skinny looking next to Conrad. But somehow he really delivered that punch, and on national T.V.! Boy, he must have really loved Kim! Of course, she was Anne-Margaret, so I'm sure that was a big motivation!
Keep in mind, this guys songs were so fucking catchy the fucking UNITED STATES MILITARY wanted the dude to perform at an ACTIVE WARZONE Not only that, but they though the talent of a contemporary pop singer was so captivating that they thought the enemy would just lay down their guns as soon as they heard him. I could not begin making this up if I even tried....
I thought so, too, when he wasn't sneering! He was so funny, especially in "Honestly Sincere". He made the whole crowd faint! I loved how the mayor's wife kept fainting, and her husband kept having to keep her knees together! Great scene!
Interestingly, the year after this film was made Ann-Margret filmed "Viva Las Vegas" with Elvis Presley, the obvious but unspoken figure upon whom "Conrad Birdie" was based.
@@Cookies_crumbs Jesse (Conrad) Pearson was 6'3". Bobby Rydell was much shorter and skinnier. He had a great voice, though, and he did a good job in the dancing sequence"Got Alot of Livin' To Do".
The story is better when the kiss is prevented by the punch. Otherwise the conflict changes from “will Kim give Conrad her first kiss” to “will Kim give Conrad another kiss?” Which has less drama.
I looked up Jesse Pearson and he was born in 1930. The movie was released in 1963. Probably was filmed in 1962. He was 32 or 33 at the time. It makes me laugh because my mom was born in 1929, and she had NO AFFINITY for rock music! It was big band or nothing for her!
It kinda puts you in mind of grease but more innocent. Wonder if this movie inspired the grease movie BTW he sounds, moves and dances NOTHING like elvis which makes it even funnier as a parody
I heard that TPTB we're really concerned about him, ah, gyrating that pelvis too much! When he was singing "Honestly Sincere" he did some pretty suggestive moves, but I guess the cameras cut away in time. When Elvis was on Ed Sullivan, he was filmed from the waist up. No bumping and grinding allowed on national television!
55 years later and I still get a kick out of these songs.

Ann-Margaret is absolutely wonderful in this role
LOL, randolphs face when conrad cuts to B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-BY-Y is PRICELESS.
Paul Lyndes reaction, "could you move over one please" @2:58,, priceless
What does you husband do? I don't know, he's dead. Funniest line in the movie.
Indeed. Maureen Stapleton was a wonderful actress.

For real. Now they just give them unwanted STDs.

I'm late but who cares, so was lin manuel miranda. (Creator of Hamilton) by the way, how did you do?
Hugo is cuter than Conrad. Just putting that out there.
And the guy playing Hugo (Bobby Rydell) was arguably the bigger real-life star.
