  • The BMW iX3 represents the German automaker's first step into the world of fully electric SUVs. Taking the conventional X3 as a starting point and swapping out its internal combustion entrails for an all-electric powertrain, the iX3 looks to bring BMW's relatively storied engineering prowess to the booming luxury EV crossover space. But does it have what it takes to truly shine?
Exterior styling is understated, as you might expect from a BMW. Some blue accent trim and blanked-off sections where the grilles would normally be are the only real giveaways that this is the electric version. It looks clean and handsome if not terribly exciting. The same could be said for the interior which is a familiar BMW cabin with just a few blue accents to remind you this one runs on electrons.
Under the skin is a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, producing a reasonable if not mind-blowing 286 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 80 kWh battery pack allows for an estimated 282 mile range, putting it towards the upper end of the competition but nowhere near the dual-motor Tesla Model Y or Mustang Mach-E. At least it can charge at up to 150 kW for relatively quick top-ups.
On the road, the iX3 is composed and comfortable if not terribly exciting to drive. The low center of gravity from the battery pack pays handling dividends, but overall the driving experience feels muted - there's very little of the fizzy exhilaration that some rivals provide. Speed is adequate with a 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds, but the acceleration doesn't pin you back in your seat like some performance EVs.
The upside is a vault-like quiet cabin and a nicely damped ride, at least on smooth surfaces. Criticism could be leveled at the firmer "Sport" suspension setting which gets too jarring, while the base suspension tune is just a touch stiffer than you might like in a luxury SUV. Interior space and practicality are on par with the standard X3.
Really, that's the core issue with the iX3 - it doesn't feel like a truly bespoke electric vehicle experience. It comes across more like BMW's first attempt at shoehorning EV technology into an existing platform, which to be fair is exactly what it is. While perfectly competent in most regards, the iX3 lacks the seamless integration and effortless performance of rivals designed from the ground up to be EVs.
That said, the iX3 does have the advantages of a premium badge, decent real-world range, and reasonably accessible pricing for its segment. If you want a reasonably spacious electric SUV from an established luxury brand without any frills or quirks, the iX3 could well fit the bill. Just don't go in expecting to be blown away by the EV experience.
