    One of the best features of your Faderport 8 to mention is that you can use the blue rotary knob to control whatever the mouse is hovering over in Studio One. So you have your physical knob to control any parameter by simply hovering over it with the mouse.

    I believe in using the best tool for the job. So I used to Track in Protools, Compose in Ableton, Mix in Mixbus 32c and Print with Triumph.
    Now I do everything in Studio One. With the Console 1 and Faderport 8 it's the best workflow I've ever used!

    Great video. Been toying with the Console one and Faderport and just switching over to Studio One now. (you've already shown me a few tricks I wasn't aware of). The new UAD integration with Console 1 also now makes it even more useable/tempting. Anyway man, keep the videos coming. Very useful and like your honest and non hyped delivery.

    Thanks, I have the same experience with my Raven as you. Love the Raven, but it didn't give me the ease of control that I was hoping for. I'm going to try your set up, I think it'll be more what I'm looking for.

    My setup is: Console1 + Faderport 1 and it works perfect! The Brittish Class A channelstrip for the Console 1 is my goto. My favorite channelstrip, by far! Sound so fat :) Highly recommend!

    I like your videos man. I was on the fence with the Raven and didn't end up buying it because I came to the same conclusion you came to: nothing replaces real physical controls. I have an iPad and I don't find touching a glass screen any more satisfying than using my mouse. Hardware is hardware at the end of the day.

    Appreciate your no.nonsense style..rekon your much more in tune with those of us that use this kit daily... im An old duffer who has decided that tactile is a must for mixing, its a cliche' but I want to feel more of what I'm doing, removing the visual stimulus of screens is my big project now..thanks from.london

    THANKS VERY MUCH!! Seeing this with studio One (I am a cubase 9.5+ pro user - so quite close in many things) has me sold.You absolutely did the right thing.
    I just got a "little" UAD Twin Duo MKII so I have the plugin quality AND have taken pressure off my main cpu from my laptop in major ways .I think this is the way I will go. With the UAD Plugs - I feel the same way as you:
    With the exception of a couple of Softube (soon to be replaced with the UAD versions) - all my plugins on my machine are just becoming redundant. I am using them less and Less and Less as the UAD is so very far ahead sonically and emulation wise - I can imagine the Console 1 being exactly the same.

    I'm a raven user. I have the original mti. I get what you mean about wanting physical faders and knobs. At this point, I really don't think there is a perfect solution. I blame apple for not embracing touch screen technology on their OS. And it's so dumb too because they were the ones that launched smart phones and got us going in this direction in the first place. Studio One is definitely taking steps in the right direction with that, and windows in general is great with a touch screen. I like the idea of having physical knobs. They would definitely feel better and be more intuitive. I just think you are limited, or can't work as fast with the system you have, or working on an analog console. You either have to take the time to make the knobs/ faders control the parameter you want which slows you down, especially when you work with a lot of different plugins. Or, you have to limit yourself to always using the same plugins so you can have everything set up already and be fast. With a touch screen, you may not have physical faders, but in Studio One, I have thumbnails of all my favorite plugins in a list always open on the right side of the screen. And all I have to do is touch it and drag it over to the channel I want it on. And make adjustments. I like being able to get the sound I want the instant I imagine it without having to think about anything else. Everyone has their own preferences and what works best for them though I guess. I just feel like touch screens could be so much better if the software supported them better. As it is with the raven, the best solution I've found is customizing the buttons myself for the things I use most often.

    Thank you Matty for this very informative video. You have confirmed what I have been concerned about as I contemplated some sort of touch screen setup, including the Raven. I am relatively new to recording engineering, and I am used to using just a mouse and keyboard shortcuts. But, I am a hands on worker. I need buttons and sliders to feel. I really dig the Softube Console 1, which I had not seen before this video. That and the FaderPort 8 is exactly what I think I need. Can't wait to try them.

    Nice review dude you saved me tons of cash! Plus I read on the Steinberg forums that Slate Raven touch screens do not play well with Cubase and since I use Cubase for work, the issue is no go for me. If Steinberg ever fixes their issues with their software and touch screen interfaces, maybe I would get a used dual screen Slate Raven MTI2 unit but it is no go for me at this point due to compatibility issues on Windows 10 and Cubase.

    Have you tried the faderport 8 in PT in HUI mode yet? Would be good if you get the chance to do a video on that. Don't want to spend the cash on a Eucon controller from Avid and the faderport 8 is like half the price of an Artist Mix but HUI protocol is quite limited unfortunately. I'm sure lots of people will do the same as you have done and switch from PT to another DAW. Avid not letting third party developers use Eucon protocol in their products really annoys me. Was much better when Digidesign owned PT, at least you could get m-audio products that fit so seamlessly into the software like the faderport8 in Studio 1. Liked this vid and subscribed to your channel.

    I agree. Been thinking for awhile now that screens are killing the music and tiring me out. I also thought people buying the raven weren't being wise. It's too early and the screens aren't great yet. We need higher refresh rates and OLED or better. Never mind the response and accurracy needs to increase. Someday maybe. But still it's good to just use the ears first and last.

    As an engineer I don't have the cash for an SSL which is still my dream console but Raven is cool, gives me everything I need and fast.I have no problems with it at all, and in fact the 'hover faders feature, beats SSL.I don't dig subscriptions services for software though.

      Those big analog format consoles are acutally slowly fading away as you are starting see more like digital console these days or mixing entirely in the box but Chris-Lord-Alge lives by his SSL as he couldn't mix a Record with it. Dave Pensado and Adrew Scepts pretty much mix 100% in the box nowadays buy they do have a few outboard gear the the Neve pre amps and 1176 for hybrid mixing but that's about it.

    Console one is cool, I think that If I did not own an avid S3 I would probably go for that. The SSL nucleus 2 is cool too but it runs on hui mode in pro tools and that has a limit of 4 faders and knobs when controlling plug ins. With the avid S3 you can have 16 encoders for eq and 16 encoders for dynamics and still have the faders for attenuation.

    This wouldn't apply to the Author because I don't run a powerhouse professional studio lol, but I actually had an old Zoom HD16 multi-track recorder(from when it was almost top of the line) that I just started incorporating in my home recording when my pre-amp died. I have a Maschine Mikro & Midi Keyboard but no controller, but now I use the Zoom HD16 as a pre-amp, mixer, D/I box, Drum Machine/metronome , a Sampler(I dont use,) EFFECT processor(has Grade A reverb, nothing else good) as a controller it gives me the Fader/EQ/Pan feel and kind of centralizes everything pre-and-post Audio Interface (I do use a better interface, A Presonus Studio 68) but im quite happy with it

    That has always been my opinion on the slate raven... I just can't do it without the real touch of the fader... many times i like to close my eyes and fader ride when mixing and let the music guide me... i can't really do that on a screen. I suggested steve him to create a fader port already integrated with a monitor controller thing...

    great video! i bought the raven V1 soon after its release. nothing but wasted time and money. i, too, love Slate's stuff and have the plugin subscription, but my list of problems with the Raven are longer than my arm! you made a great point i never thought of. even though you can multi touch the screen, you're still touching a screen...same as a mouse pretty much. i couldn't even get my bank selector to jump to the furtherest fader on the right...typically your 2bus and master fader(s). bah!
    after the novelty of touching a screen wore off, i was stuck with a $2500 slanted monitor. have you ever had a fly land on your screen and hit the record button? i have! more than once!
    thanks for the info on the Console 1. i'm not switching from Pro Tools and i heard some of the features don't work. you mentioned that. i think i can live with that.
    Faderport is news to me. I'm off to research. Thanks for your 2 cents!

    Dope! I'm a fan of physical nobs and faders as a Record Producer. I'm not a fan of touch screens as it just doesn't feel authentic just like said as its still like using a mouse. Even as a Producer it takes a great ear to be a great Producer, knowning what sounds best as you want to focus on listening rather than visual distractions.

    Interesting video. I'm currently thinking about adding a touch screen to my setup more for editing. I use the fader port and my mouse with Studio One. Did you feel the touch screen improved your editing speed or are you just as fast with the current setup with the bonus of having less screens and listening? I've always liked the concept of just listening while mixing but I'm yet to find a system which allows you to use your plugins and achieve this.

    Great Video... ST owes you some royalties. I saw this and it caused me to research, and preorder the MkII from Sweetwater. Quick question. In terms of size, will it fit flush or close to the FaderPort8? I'm hoping to sit my FP8 just below the C1. Just curious.
    Thanks

      The faderport is a bit higher. But I'm sure with you could put something under to make a bit higher.

    I understand you, but if you combine keyb with raven is very powerful, for example I understand looking the screen because you can do quick moves and you need to do then in one direction, but if you combine example pressing shift key to lock and slow down the moving of the knob you don’t need to look to the screen, and if you do you raven for editing is amazing you need to work in a different way them you normally do but after you establish that is on the fly, another thing raven can do macros and is much quicker to design them in the daw if it allows it. I have macros of 100!!!Commands that I literally press one button and I go to recording room work and come back, and voilá work done.

    When I learned Console 1 doesn't have DSP in the hardware, I was kind of turned away. That's seems like the route to go, that way you're getting the flexibility of digital, but the low latency of analog.

    • @mixedbymatty
      @mixedbymatty  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty light on the CPU. You can also use UAD plugs with it now. SO you can go that route.

    Hey I noticed you had an Artist Mix on more recent videos but also noticed you don't have it in even newer videos, did you have any problems with it.?

    • @ezrashanti
      @ezrashanti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The artist mix is good I think it's just because he switched to Studio One so he wanted deep integration with his DAW. Even with the s-1 coming out, the artist mix is still good if you want something low profile.

    Makes sense to me. I do like that mouse tho. It's not like you have the first mouse EVER with a rolling ball. Idunno. I am not a hardware person. Don't get the problem with using one or having visual input.

    Wondering, since the faderport controls plugins, couldn't you use the faderport to control the softtube plugins without the console 1?

    hello and thx for info . i have a artist mix controller and want to use the faders like you were on a plugin . its the Eucontrol and i can't find anything on it to see if that would work . I can turn the knobs but they're so small on the fingers . last is there somewhere to download the way you program each plugin . most are setup well but others have far to much info to scroll through and the mouse is faster for those times . but also not a mouse fan ,thanks joe

    What touch screen and synths does Hans Zimmer use?

    • @jhagley
      @jhagley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Renaissance Man not sure what brand of screen he uses, but the touch interface is all custom programmed for him. He also has a wall of analog synths. Software synths though, he uses a lot of Zebra 2. They even released a version called The Dark Zebra, which includes all the patches he used in The Dark Knight.

    I am more of a musician than a sound engineer, but I am getting more into Studio One 5 and the world of mixing. How do you like the Faderport? I am thinking about getting one, but also drawn to the X-Touch. Do you know anything about the S-touch. I know the Faderport is special for Studio One, but the X-Touch seems more flexible and I was thinking of maybe eventually getting a Behringer XR18 for use in a live situation and have the x-touch for that.
