Just to clarify - he did not play in the Euroleague. He played in Lithuanian basketball league, which is like a 6th-10th league in Europe in terms of players quality. He also played in one of the worst teams in that league. Nonetheless it was a good thing for him, as Lithuanians are very much tactics based league with players that are not as talented, but more of hard workers. Playing in Lithuania was mostly good for his ego, because in terms of other things the coach allowed him to do more or less everything and once he tried to put him into tactics, they got in a conflict with Lavar and they left. I feel like if they had a full season here, with a team that played in the Eurocup (second best international tournament after Euroleague), he would’ve benefited even more. But on the other hand, looks like this path also turned out quite good for him.
And with “good for his ego”, I mean that, either nobody cares about him, or some of the players actively disliked him for being arrogant without having anything proved yet. I’m pretty sure it was even a bit traumatizing for him, because he was not a favorite player in the team, came there in mid-winter, in one of the ugliest cities in the country and played for a coach, who didn’t speak English. So… I feel like that had to provide him with enough motivation to get himself to the level of NBA and to not be someone who has to look for a career in Europe. 😅 But yeah, at the time he was nowhere near the level of Euroleague. Luka Doncic and Ricky Rubio are probably the only two players that I can remember that had significant roles in Euroleague before they turned 18, with Luka winning it all when he was 18-19. It’s still crazy how stupid even some of the scouts were to let him fall to 3rd pick when he was Euroleague’s MVP and Final’s MVP, Spanish League’s MVP and became a European champion with Sloviena, while being second best player on the team, all while being at the age of 18-19.
