The lyrics of this song touch me to the core and express my personal feelings perfectly. Thank you Dougie for writing and performing it. I never tire of hearing it. ❤
My dad and I were separated when I was young and he decided to call me Caledonia after this song so when I hear it it's like listening to my dad's spirit singing to me. Makes me weep.
This song actually made me cry every time I tried to sing it. But I persevered and I 'think' I can do it now without crying, maybe the emotion will remain though. Thank you Dougie , from one Doug to another!
Caledonia is my favourite song ! Absolutely love it. Thanks for writing it Dougie 🏴 whenever I’m missing Scotland I play this song. I’ve literally just returned from a trip to the highlands and Caledonia was played many times on the trip south. 😢
Caledonia is a stand in for any place in your past that you are nostalgic for. You wrote a beautiful song expressing a universal feeling of life lived an love won and lost and won again and that sense of some mythical home that you wish to return to but it's kind of back there in the mists of time. Thanks so much.
Dougie McLean is a gifted talented songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist. It is so clear he is often dubbed the “James Taylor of Scotland”. Listening to him talk about his love for music, performing and telling stories about his upbringing and working with other musicians is enjoyable to hear. I had the pleasure seeing Dougie 2 times at the Grand in Ellsworth, Maine. He was very open and approachable and I talked to him for a few minutes after those 2 shows. He’s very sincere and he’s the real deal, nothing fake about him at all. Hey Dougie…when you read this when will you be coming back to Maine? Please come back 😀. David Page.
I used to live in Rowerdennan before moving to Vancouver and remember seeing him in Concert in Vancouver. The show was excellent and Dougie was a really lovely guy. Staying after the show and having a drink and chat with everyone, no Aires and graces, no ego, just a lovely fellow.
Dear Dougie, thank you for telling the story about 'Caledonia'❣ Hearing it again,i just realized that i got a calling through it to move to Scotland. I heard it first delivered from a German guy,who got to know you once,Wulf Schnaase is his nane. And i was flooded with tears and at that moment my soul's door has been kicked open before i put even a food on the land. So many years later i live now 7 1/2 years in Caledonia and i just wait on the result of my apoeal to get my unlimited status. Loads of love, miracles and blessings to you Doogie and everyone who loves❤❤❤❤❤From Scotland🌈🐬 Gabriele 🐉🌺 PS: let me tell you that i love you and that i think about it all the time,Caledonia you're calling me. ....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

i think about home all the time I don't know if you can see The changes that have come over me In these last few days I've been afraid That I might drift away So I've been telling old stories, singing songs That make me think about where I came from And that's the reason why I seem So far away today Oh, but let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me And now I'm going home If I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Oh and I have moved and I've kept on moving Proved the points that I needed proving Lost the friends that I needed losing Found others on the way Oh and I have tried and kept on trying Stolen dreams yes there's no denying I have traveled far with conscience flying Somewhere with the wind Oh, but let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me And now I'm going home If I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Now I'm sitting here before the fire The empty room, the forest choir The flames that could not get any higher They've withered now they've gone But I'm steady thinking my way is clear And I know what I will do tomorrow When the hands are shaken and the kisses flow Then I will disappear Oh, but let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me And now I'm going home If I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
I saw Dougie at the Edmonton Folk festival back in '02, i think. In his intro he said that he encountered a very drunk man outside of a pub in Glasgow singing Caledonia to his rapidly departing wife.

So glad he is a nice bloke. It's a great song and being Scottish and living in England it has that wee bit something extra for me.

Dear Dougie has just claimed Scotland this year. The concerts, the craic. Such a a lovely man
The fact that he didn’t say “I wrote this” and had the craic with the folks in the pub tells you what a class guy Dougie is
My great grandmother was named Caledonia. Lovely name and beautiful song.
Good on ya Dougie. Always love to hear you sing and Caledonia has such great words that can have so much meaning in life as we go about ones life..... Best wishes P .
A Living Scottish Legend ! 🏴, this song is up there with Burns songs.
I play Caledonia when I feed my newborn son. Thanks Dougie, from America!
It may add a sense of belonging, but the melody really reaches out to me❤
A wonderful contribution and it can have lovely harmonies. Love songs with good range :)

Caledonia....the named given by the ancient Romans..God Bless..lovely song..
i think about home all the time
I don't know if you can see
The changes that have come over me
In these last few days I've been afraid
That I might drift away
So I've been telling old stories, singing songs
That make me think about where I came from
And that's the reason why I seem
So far away today
Oh, but let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me
And now I'm going home
If I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything
I've ever had
Oh and I have moved and I've kept on moving
Proved the points that I needed proving
Lost the friends that I needed losing
Found others on the way
Oh and I have tried and kept on trying
Stolen dreams yes there's no denying
I have traveled far with conscience flying
Somewhere with the wind
Oh, but let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me
And now I'm going home
If I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything
I've ever had
Now I'm sitting here before the fire
The empty room, the forest choir
The flames that could not get any higher
They've withered now they've gone
But I'm steady thinking my way is clear
And I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands are shaken and the kisses flow
Then I will disappear
Oh, but let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me
And now I'm going home
If I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything
I've ever had
Being Appalachian and residing now in the deep south I can relate to it
Appalachia and the Deep South are probably about as different as Scotland is to East Anglia.

And it made me want to have a daughter and name her thus
