The beginning is almost like watching a horror movie or a pre-apocalypse scene. Everything is fine and normal but little do they know that everything will soon go downhill.
If there is anyone like me who has issues - panic, PTSD, or its just a not okay thing to watch for you - with people visibly in pain, skip from 5:10 to 8:28. Its just Stephen explaining the pain and the severity while looking and sounding in a shit ton of distress and pain and I know I can't watch that because of PTSD reasons.
I have Panic Disorder and PTSD, and even knowing that Stephen is okay now, I probably shouldn't have watched that (watched it right after the vlog came out, so I didn't know at the time). Thumbing up your comment so other people hopefully will see it and avoid any panic/PTSD issues.
Yeah, from the comments I know a lot of people found it scary cause it is someone we care about, I just know for me it triggered a flashback so I wanted to warn others if possible.
just in case the ignorant can still get notifications from this comment thread i figure i should educate him on his lack of understanding first up anxiety www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/anxiety-disorders/index.shtml it is a thing, you might be all high and mighty and sure of your own ignorance but it is still a thing. and off course the reason why this video pains so many to watch, empathy we are fans of this man, many of us has had him as part of our daily lives for years, and when we see him in pain our empathy what normal people have that helps them with the real world by not being jerks and allowing them to be in groups, well the same survival tactic hits them hard when someone that they care about is feeling horrible.
I feel really bad for Steven and this had to been really bad but I feel really bad for Mal as well. You don't know what it's like to watch your partner in this much pain and not know what's wrong.
Oh, I do. I was looking to see that or comment....It's the most horrific anguish I've ever experienced, watching the one you love in pain and not being able to do anything to help other then be there.
Stephen when he's in pain sounds so desperate. :( It makes me feel so bad. Also, the fear over money when you're in so much pain is just such a sad and scary reality.
Indeed. That happened to me a couple years ago, however I wasn't smart enough to go as soon as he did. When I went in I was under the knife in less than 45 mins
My older sister had her appendix burst a few years ago. It was during the swine flu epidemic, so the doctor just assumed it was that. Her appendix burst and she had to have serious surgery and stayed in the hospital for 3 weeks during her senior year of highschool.
WOW. I knew this was coming..but that moment of pure excitement about the gardening and the hard cut into you showing physical pain..I just burst out in tears. You looked so awful :(
Being a chemotherapy patient to get rid of my Leukemia, I am no stranger to emergency hospital visits. Be it fevers or sudden bleeding or even fatigue, sucks that you had to experience this Stephen but I'm glad that you're better now. Shoutout to modern medicine right?
I hope that your chemotherapy goes well and your health improves. My sister is 35 now after being diagnosed with leukemia at age 6, and though some of it has been hard and really sucked, she's making a great life for herself.

That was tough to watch. Brought back some unpleasant memories of the time when I had appendicitis. The pain is ridiculous. On top of that I got blood poisoning after the surgery, which was just great. I'm glad everything went well with you Stephen.
When Stephen tried to sing They Might Be Giants I got like super happy. Just being able to think of music while in that much pain is nothing to sneeze at.
Even with knowing for a while that this vlog was coming soon, it was still scary when the vlog shifted so dramatically. Glad everything turned out okay and you're feeling better, Stephen. And great job Mal with staying strong through this whole ordeal!
I can just imagine the jaws theme playing for the minutes leading up to the appendix burst in this vlog. All jokes aside, I'm glad you're better Stephen. I had appendicitis myself just a couple years ago and it was awful. I feel your pain man.
I saw this on twitter and I know you came out fine, but it was still the scariest moment watching you go through that pain. :( I'm so glad you're alright. Mal please give Stephen a hug for me and the rest of the Stephenites and Stephen give Mal a hug from us for what she went through.
Going with the question of the vlog, my only experience with the ER is my inflamed appendix when I was 8. My abdominal pain wasn't as bad as Stephen's got (I've had period cramps that were worse. Class 10 pain, sweating and sitting in the fetal position, etc) but I did throw up quite a bit before I got to the hospital. Getting the IV didn't bother me any. Going under was weird to me because it was like I closed my eyes for 30secs and it was done. I won a small toy from BINGO the next day and played a little 2D Sonic in the hospital's game room and watched Hercules for the first time in their little theater. It was somewhat annoying to have to drag my IV everywhere, but I had my mom with me every step of the way. My mom ended up checking me out of the hospital a few days early because they were giving me too much morphine, making it so I lost my appetite, but they wouldn't listen to my mom's request to lessen it. After that I had stiff legs if I sat too long, giving me a bad limp, because the surgery and stitches were near my right thigh. It concerned my teacher when I went back to school but I assured her it was fine. Overall it was a good experience thanks to all the effort that goes into children's hospitals to make the experience less unfun.
Oh!!! My heart goes out to Past Stephen and Past Mal!!! I know everything turns out all right, but what a scary and painful event!!! I ended up having an emergency c-section after spending two days in the hospital trying to induce labor. The worst part was the epidural. My body was shaking involuntarily as they're sticking a gigantic needle all the way up my spine, and of course that's when my contractions decided to REALLY kick in. After an hour of pushing, the doctor told me I was doing everything correct, but he still wasn't descending. I was wheeled into surgery, and what felt like minutes later, I saw the most perfect little boy in the whole world. The doctor said his arm was stretched up by his head, and that's what caused him to be stuck.
Not the time yet but at the time I'm watching this, it's 1:27am on my birthday. I am now 20. Not the ideal vlogs to watch but hey, I'll take it! :) BTW, Stephen, great job on managing to catch up with vlogs. Started watching since October 2016 and am still waiting for the day you finally catch up! Keep up the great work!
I'm so glad you were able to recover from this Stephen. Appendicitis is one of my biggest fears. Also, it is so dumb how much any medical institution makes you wait. I live near one of the best hospitals and medical systems in the country and they still make you wait a long time.
It is clear how much pain you were in when you were in the car, especially since you seem to never show any normally at all. I'm just glad that you seem better now. Just remember Stephen that if money is a problem, don't be afraid of asking for help of the watchers because we will back you up if needed.
The idea of my appendix bursting scares me to no end sometimes. I've actually had a few times where I had a mild pain and assumed the worst, even going to the hospital to be checked. That said, hearing Stephen's description of where the pain occurs helps. Also, hearing that after 7 hours at home and 6 hours in the ER you were still able to get things settled is another relief. (I would still act fast if I think it's happening to me, but I won't be nearly as panicked now if it does.) Also, 2023 here. Journey's still moving along nicely.

When I was 13 I had a really awful bout of abdominal pain. My dad took me into the ER, since I was in so much pain I could hardly stand. They were convinced it was my appendix. After all the testing, turns out it was a cyst on my ovary. Flash 10 years forward, and I have been dealing with cysts ever since, and diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Meaning I deal with pretty bad pain, most every day. Most cysts come and go on their own, but the beginning of April I had to go under to get a goofball sized dermoid cyst removed. Yaaaaaay hospitals. All I can say is because of my frequent doctor, specialist, and hospital visits, I am so thankful to be Canadian.
On the last day of our spring break trip last year, my friends and I were sitting in our hotel room watching a movie and packing when I got intense pains like you were describing. I thought it was my appendix so we went to a random hospital emergency room in Florida at around 1:00 AM and they took me back and did a CT. Turned out to be a kidney stone that had lodged itself in the part of my kidney that connects to the tubes that go to the bladder. There wasn't much they could do except let it pass on its own, so they gave me some IV pain meds and sent me home with some Percocet. Definitely an experience I won't forget! I've been waiting to watch this vlog since you announced on Twitter that it had happened. I'm very glad you're okay now!
I had my appendix removed last August. I know the pain and when you were explaining everything, I could just feel the pain again. I also just did not want to go to the hospital but when I finally did, I was like thank god! Sorry that happened to you, but I'm glad you're alright!
Seeing Stephen in that much pain and panicking worried me so bad even though I know what it is now and that you pulled through. Good thing you listened to Mal about it.
I'm glad you're ok. This actually broke a few misconceptions I had about the appendix. I was surprised the pain actually subsided a bit for instance. Really glad the doctors got it out and your recovery went well.
Oh my goodness! Even though we didn't have video of you screaming in pain, I can just imagine how that was for both you and Mal. And a special amount of empathy for being stuck in an ER waiting room/back room for such a ridiculous amount of time, because I went through that recently as well. Especially due to that CT scan! Those always have such a heavy backlog! I'm kinda glad we know you're ok since the vlogs are behind and you've been doing well since, but geez I know how terrifying that much pain is, especially when you don't know what your issue is.

My brother's appendix almost burst in 2014, and let me tell you, he *NEVER* acts like he's sick. Except that time, and it was scary. He has a photographic memory, and doesn't remember most of the experience. My brother got admitted very quickly, and essentially the first person they talked to was the anesthesiologist, which was a surprise for them. I can't imagine needing to wait 4 hours.
Now that I experienced this myself (Well, I'd be in Mal's place) because my mum suddenly grew in pain suddenly and it made me think of this vlog and it may have saved my mum's life. I kept telling her "Please, get this checked. Your pain reminds me of Stephen!" Sure enough...
Back in May of this year I had an emergency ER visit while I was with my mom in Philadelphia (I’m from Phoenix, so not a familiar city for me). My heartbeat was extremely erratic, ranging from 110-130 bpm and would change on a dime. I was also in severe pain in my upper chest and all up and down my left arm. My mom despite my protests took me to the ER where the test results confirmed I was not having a heart attack (luckily) but otherwise came up inconclusive other than above-average WBC count, which made sense because 2 days later I woke up with a really bad sinus infection. Not sure if being sick was related to my heart issue but I have no history of heart problems and have not had an issue since 🤷🏼♀️. I know this vlog is a few years old now but I’m glad you’re okay Stephen!
Oh Stephen. I'm at 7:45 right in the middle of your car ride with "food poisoning" I feel your pain -- 7 hours (bless your heart) -- literally. I remember that ride to the ER all too well. Every bump felt like an electric shock right to to gut. (I had a BUMPY 1 hour trip to the closest trustworthy hospital). I have to commend your dedication to us, your viewer family. I remember not thinking clearly, not wanting to be bothered with anything because I was in so much pain. You rock! BTW, this is probably the closest experience you are able to have to compare to labor pains. Just sayin ;)

Jesus Christ. I just had a flashback of my experience with my appendix when I was 6 years old. Coming back from school, eating dinner, and suddenly it strikes and it doesn't stop. It wasn't until 8 at night when my parents took me to the hospital and realized my appendix was inflamed. I remember the doctor injecting me with the IV needle. "Ow, Ow" I complained when the needle went in. And then I was out cold. Then I woke up and had a popsicle.
I had my appendix out when I was 8 years old, and it was actually really scare because my mom was out of state when it happened. But the thing that broke my heart about the whole thing was missing a second grade field trip to a local dinosaur museum
That would break my heart too, bummer! It's like the time I busted my knee and didn't get to see the boats at the marina. I had a huge hole in my knee, on the way to the ER, and the thing that bothered me most was I didn't get to see the boats!
Looking back at this, it now reminds me of a recent happening when I had sepsis. I felt fine one hour, but the next, I was freezing cold with nothing being able to warm me. I was told we'd have to wait about four hours more (up to that point, I'd already been feeling insane chills, body pain, etc., for about four hours) to go to the doctor's. At that point, I knew it couldn't wait any longer, but even getting up from my bed and into the car took so, so much energy. I remember being in the ER and just waiting and waiting and waiting, then being taken to an "actual" hospital room as Stephen says himself here. I'd calmed down by then and had been feeling better, but it rather quickly became pretty miserable. This was in the midst of the pandemic last year, and so visitors were very limited. I could barely sleep during the day due to people coming in and out to help mend me. Getting up to go to the bathroom was awful, as that IV machine was stuck to me and would make a horrendous beeping noise if it didn't have a correct angle into my vein. I had to urinate about every hour, so I just gave up and did it in the plastic jug I was given for that. My OCD was ravaging me all the while, and I'd almost never felt so atrocious. But just as bad as all that, it was so, unbelievably, boring: I had to spend five days basically by myself in a hospital room with my phone and a tv, and that was it. There might certainly be worse deals out there, but being connected to a machine and pretty stuck to the bed made any desire to use my phone practically nonexistent; the tv didn't regularly have anything particularly interesting playing, either. It was a rough five days, but it wasn't the worst of human suffering that goes on in a hospital; all things considered, I'd say I had it pretty well, honestly. Just certainly not a desire to ever do again.
Man it was so difficult to watch h you in so much pain I cannot even imagine what it was like for Mal. and especially for you being in so much pain. Really did feel like a horror movie but actually scarier. So glad your okay, now.
I went through this same scenario when i was a child I can relate to the pain you felt during that whole experience, unfortuantly I can only imagine how scared you and mal must've been during this whole debacal.
When you're talking in the car I just want to tell you to shut up (in a nice way of course) because I can tell how much it hurts to even talk. You are really dedicated to this! (sorry if that was rude)

Micthy99 To some people even if it seems like it's making it worse, talking helps them when they're in pain. Of course Stephen would have to tell us if this is how it works for him, or if he's just dedicated to the vlog.
I've had pain issues before (never to this point, but I sorta understand) and at least in my case whenever it got really bad the best I could do was curl up into a ball on my bed. Speaking would be out of the question (for reference I once broke 7 bones and I didn't realize and never went to the doctor's for it) But if it helped Stephen then good, but it sounded like it made it really hard for him.

He could've just had Mal explain the situation while driving or while they're in the hospital room (not the waiting room because I'm sure recording was the last thing on their minds then), but nooooo, he's so darn dedicated that he updates us himself after enduring 7 hours of pain.
I know how tough it is to make the call to go to the ER but I'm so glad you made it in time and have made a full recovery since. I've had 2 emergency hospital stays, one with each of my pregnancies. Both times I was admitted and had to stay 7 days with my daughter and 30 days with my son. Not great experiences but everything turned out okay in the end. :)
It was the year 2015, I had just started a second job at a bookstore, and Christmas was around the corner. Both stores were having parties for the employees, and due to me messing up my schedule a little, I had to have one shift swapped for another. I ate so many subs at the bookstore's party, knowing that I wasn't going to get a chance to make a meal between jobs, and wanting to save money. Little did I know that I, along with 19 other employees, was about to get major food poisoning. I vomited at work, and had to rush home. Not such a great day after your birthday. When I got home I again rushed to the bathroom, and paid tribute, only to hear my sister yelling my name. Turns out I passed out while emptying my stomach. This continued throughout the night. At one point I even fell out of my bed and smashed my head onto the dresser. And now I'm afraid of subway
Oh my god. That's the horror story of food poisoning.... Like, I wasn't a huge fan of subway before but now....eesh. I'm glad you're better now, though. (idk why I say that considering this happened in 2015, but whatever.) Man, I don't blame you for being nervous around subway.

I have to go the hospital on Monday for a week for cancer treatment and this was not the vlog to watch... Everything was so achingly familiar. I'm glad this is a rare occurrence for you, Stephen.
I couldn't help but notice the machine you decided to sing along to. That's weird how that pump machine was so loud compared to those I've been hooked up to. I've had to deal with those pump machines for three years, and not once was there one that made such a sound. I got some transfusions at a slow rate, and others in less than an hour. I wonder how old that machine is.
God, watching this was painful, I nearly began crying just hearing how much pain Stephen was in. I've had to go to the ER twice for kidney stones and while I don't think they're on the same level of pain, I know all too well how much pain it takes to go to the hospital that you're screaming and crying. I'm glad that things are alright now, but even knowing you were okay now didn't stop me from feeling so scared about what was happening.
I can totally agree with your sentiments about not wanting to go to the ER. I've had Crohn's Disease for 11 years and I've had many many trips to the ER and it is not a fun place. The worst time was when my doctor sent me down to the ER and I ended up waiting EIGHT hours in the place, only to be told it would be AT LEAST another 24 hours before I got a room (pro-tip, never go to an ER in a big city) so my mom and I literally walked out of the ER, drove to a closer one, and were placed in a room almost immedietly (don't go to an ER in a big city). So yeah, ERs are awful, awful places, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go because it's going to suck a lot more if you don't.
I used to get the stomach bug every year and had to go get IVs because I couldn't keep anything down. Other than that, I was an idiot as a kid and ate cucumbers after getting my tonsils out and broke the scabs and had to be rushed to the ER.
I had some abdomen pain issues some time back where I would have pain for a day or so every couple of months. It didn't really bother me too much, but one time it ended up lasting for a lot longer than usual and the pain was also worse, although luckily not as bad as yours, Stephen. I went to the ER and ended up staying a night there because they weren't sure what was causing the pain, and then the next day I was sent to a bigger hospital were I ended up having laparoscopic surgery (they basically just go in and look) and also removed a cyst, which seemed to be the culprit. I was in hospital for three days total, and it would probably not have been too bad if it weren't for the fact that both of the nights I spent there I shared rooms with some people who were either in a lot more pain than I was, or had issues that made them puke through the night.
Good thing Mal talked him into going to the ER. Also, Stephen's dedication to recording his life is amazing, but it was really hard to watch when he was clearly in so much pain.
I was hospitalized for a week for pneumonia when I was four. I don't know if it was an emergency. All I recall was my biological mom having to leave to go home and check on my brothers and pack an overnight bag and me reaching out for her as she left. She never was the hugging and comforting type so I always had a fear of her leaving and not coming back until I got older and slowly grew apart from her both physically and emotionally. At least she brought me my favorite stuffed animal so I had something to hug. On another note though, this shows how much you guys mean to me because I can never watch someone I love/care about be in pain without tearing up. I'm just glad you're all right!
I feel you on the being afraid of my family leaving me thing. At least you had a stuffed animal with you, though; that always makes things better, at least for me personally. 😊
for someone who had a ruptured appendicitis when she was 9, when you said you had appendicitis, I was a little scared to say the least. I'm glad that you came out of it okay, Stephen and thank you Mal for the updates via Twitter *hugs*
My first emergency room visit was when I was about 6 years old. I was running and tripped on something, and I landed on my elbow the wrong way. That dislocated my humerus and I had to get some metal rods in my elbow to stabilize it, and I had a cast for quite a long time. Luckily it was my left elbow and I'm right handed, but it still sucked, anyone who's had a cast will tell you that it sucks. Most of all, showering/bathing, you have to have a plastic bag over your arm while you shower.
Dang, I'm sorry you had to deal with all that! I remember when I had my appendix removed, the pain beforehand was unbearable. The vlog was pretty intense, but I'm just glad you were okay in the end.
I've had my appendix out, so I understand what you went through. They gave me the pain/10 too. I didn't quite pass out, but I almost did, right when I got to the hospital. They had to give me a wheelchair. I was lucky enough for mine to start right when I woke up that day, and to get a doctor who instantly said "Appendix, go to the hospital now". Definitely a really, really awful thing to go through, but at least you only ever have to go through it once.
Stephen, I had my appendix removed, too. It was 2012, and I was visiting extended family in Malta when me, my brother and my mum all caught a Chest Virus that was going around that European Winter and this was at the end of the holiday. My Brother and my mum were blessed that it went away, not like me. It then moved into my stomach making me take like 3 different tablets to hopefully make it go away before i had to sit on a plane for 24 hours to get back home to Australia. (Yes 24 hours + an 8 hour layover in Dubai). However that didn't work and I still had stomach cramps by the time we had to leave. While on the plane I ate nothing cause the only thing I could have eaten was soup and they didn't serve it. When i got back home to Aus that day i had no stomach cramps which was the first time in 11 days that it didn't happen. But the next day i woke up with a really aching back. I woke my parents up to take me to the local hospital at like 9am. We were there from 9am till about 5pm and from that time all we got was "Your back is fine, your sick and your going through puberty so as a result your feeling the pain in your back, we're worried about your stomach." So the sent us to the Big Children's Hospital in the city from there I had to have my pee tested and I even had an ultrasound to see what was the problem before, finally at 12am the found out that my appendix had blown up. So than at 3am I got it removed. But still to this day I have no idea what caused my appendix to blow up, the best rumour we came up with was maybe I wasn't used to having the European medicine and having so much of it in my stomach caused it to blow up, but hey I'll never know. And then I had some more crazy things happen while in hospital for 2 weeks. Mainly the new issue was the doctors were extremely worried at how skinny I was as a 13 year old weighing an amount no 13 year old should way. They were that worried they thought my parent's were not feeding me, there were trust. But it's just in my family all of us boys are really skinny and that was it. :P so yeah that's my one and only hospital story and it's a fricken crazy one
The only time I have ever personally been in the hospital was after my car wreck. Totally didn't need it at all, but whatever. Got to be strapped down in a gurney in an ambulance and wheeled into the hospital, where they had me lay down on a bed in the hall because the rooms were all full. All things considered, I recovered from it super fast, especially for how violent the crash was. No serious injuries and I was still able to stand (for HOURS) at my sister's wedding a few days later.
Dam this scared.. you were so happy vlogging all of sudden stephen dieing in the car.. glad your safe and better now even your vloging in 2021... yes I'm re watching your years through this pandemic... be safe!
oh god Steven, you scared me! I was expecting more build up to your appendix, not that sudden. I'm so sorry this is happening, and i hope you get better.
The only time I went to the ER was last year. It was a combination of a panic attack and some IBS symptom. I've had horrible stomach troubles before and was worried that it had returned. Worrying about that and the panic attack... That was not a fun time.
Just about 2 months before this vlog I went to the ER around noon for stomach pain that had me up at 3 am, and what made it ironic was I had this problem but not as severe and until this time I never had any nausea and I was about a week from a doctor visit to figure out what was causing it. So after they ran tests they found out 2 things, 1 was that the pain was a gallstone that got stuck in the bile duct that required a ERCP, and 2 was that my gallbladder needed to be removed. It went well but after the ERCP which was the next day, I was stuck there for 2 extra days before my gallbladder removal because I had inflammation, and coming out of the surgery I had a fever so I had to stay an extra day chocking up a full 6 days stuck there. Hopefully neither of us have a reason to go back, glad to know everything went well.
Oh my gosh I'm so sorry this happened. I have a fear of this happening to me because it always sounds so horrific. I'm glad that this was in the past and hope you've recovered well! (I also like your hospital gown at 14:98. That is the height of hospital fashion)
this is why im staying in Massachusetts. We have doctor that can tell by looking at the patient and figuring out the symptoms what the problem is. My sister would have had brain damage if not be dead from her appendix bursting in the trash bag, seconds after being removed, if it wasn't for the doctor figuring it out before her cat scan. If your pain is 10/10, its an automatic emergency and your in a bed within seconds here in Massachusetts
There was one time a few years ago when my teeth started hurting really bad while I was home alone. At first it was just a light sting, but after an hour or two it was bursts of mind crippling pain where I couldn't do anything but try to endure it until it passed. A few months before I'd gotten my wisdom teeth removed and hadn't used up all the medication, so when my parents came home I told them I wanted to take the medication again and have them schedule an appointment for me the next day. On my way back to my room the pain came back and I fell down in the hallway. My sister found me crying and punching the ground involuntarily and ran to get my parents. My dad got all upset that I wouldn't respond when he asked me questions, but I couldn't process what he was saying, much less answer whatever he was asking. The pain eventually passed in less than two seconds and I stood up on my own, took the pill (which doubled as a narcotic, praise the Lord), got ready for bed, and passed out right as the next wave of pain was approaching. My mom woke me up in the morning and had scheduled an emergency appointment for me at the dentist in an hour. They found out that one of the nerves under my teeth had died and the tooth had to be removed so they could perform surgery on it. I didn't have a job at the time so it was monetarily frightening too, but the pain was so intense that I didn't care if it drained me of five years of income to pay off an overdue bill if it came to that. Aside from a memorable scar, I've never had such intense pain in my life. The good news is that my dental hygiene habits improved significantly after that point.

As someone who lives in a small town and never really had to wait very long in the ER, I always am shocked at the extreme waiting times for people in the city.
For emergency hospital adventure, it actually happened a few months ago. I dislocated my knee while walking back to class in campus. My faculty called for an ambulance and we went to the ER to check on what happened. And that was the first time I was admitted to the hospital. Several months later in August, I finally got a surgery, and had both my left and right knees relocated.
When I got appendicitis, the pain started while I was out at Swiss Chalet with my grandmother and visiting Aunt. I thought I had just eaten too much or something, so I stayed quiet about the pain until we dropped off my grandmother and made it back home over an hour later, then went straight to bed. The next day, I walked to the hospital near me and was misdiagnosed and prescribed some antibiotics. A day later, I went back and they transferred me to a larger hospital under the assumption it was something with my uterus. Eventually I was properly diagnosed and treated for a burst appendix but by then I couldn't have surgery because of the infection. I ended up in the hospital a second time because I got so nauseous from cipro I couldn't take it. I learned later that apparently the doctor had told my mother it was touch and go, though I never once felt I was going to die. But misdiagnosis is a thing, so if you ever think something's wrong or you're not getting better, don't be afraid to get a second opinion. That wasn't the worst pain I'd ever felt though. That goes to gallstones earlier this year. Went to the hospital once right at the end of last year and then again later in January. The second time I got my gallbladder removed. That time, I really did feel like I was dying, even if it wasn't as lethal as the appendicitis was. The thing with the gallbladder is that the pain wasn't centralized. I had pain everywhere from my upper back to my ribs to my lower stomach. I do have to say, one thing I've always been thankful for and I hope to continue having is the public healthcare here in Canada. The wait times might be atrocious, but I'm thankful I can go to the hospital when I think something's wrong and not have to worry about the bill.
I remember needing to have an emergency hospital visit myself except it was due to my shunt in my back. Long story short it drains excess fluid from my brain to prevent headaches and the device was draining too much cause a bubble on my spine was severely life-threatening. And my doctor was two hours away too. Not fun
I remember getting mine taken out about.. hell 12 years ago at this point. It was a different experience than what Stephen experienced but it was just as bad. I wouldn't wish either kind of pain and sickness on anyone going through it myself. It was six days in the hospital and from the little bit I can remember now I think most of the time I just slept through it.

Thank goodness appendicitis is a one time deal. I haven't had it... yet, but I can imagine the pain people go through during the illness. I can imagine it isn't fun at all. I'm also grateful that doctors and surgeons found a way to cure it with laparoscopic surgery. It's less invasive and less messy, less painful, etc..
Yeah, Hospitals suck. I have a seemingly unsolvable seizure disorder and if I fail to take my meds consistently I tend to wake up in a hospital bed or ambulance with the first thing outta my mouth being an exasperated and defeated "Fuck." This most recent one was the worst however, it was the first one I had while on the meds and I actually hurt myself, and I was at work when it happened. It was just a cut above my right eyebrow and I got 3-5 stitches. I was getting ready to help a customer then I fell backwards, head over heels almost, cut my brow on this metal thing meant to hold napkins, slammed into the tile floor, and then shook for 20-30 secs and was in the ambulance 20-30mins later. The only thing I remember was the customer then waking in the ambulance, thank god for surveillance cams it allowed me to see what happens to me for the first time.
I woke up one day and one of my, um, well, let's call them man cards was super swollen and it super painful to do anything, but it was day 1 of finals so I still went to school. well the next day (The day before my 18th birthday) the swelling started to spred so I waited for my dad to wake up and as soon as he did we went to an urgent care and all they did was get me in line at the ER. We got to the ER and the after about an hour I had a ultrasound done. About an half an hour after that a doctor came in my room and told me that I had to have my man card either repaired or removed. Another 45 minutes later and I was knocked out for only 2 hours. When I woke up my doctor through my parents told me that it had to be removed because I waited too long to get it looked at. At least I'll never forget my 18th birthday.
was gonna make a joke 'cause i've seen the vlog after this one, but it was Heartbreaking to see stephen getting so stoked about the tomatoes growing and then in the next clip to see him in utter pain on the way to the ER. i know it's been forever ago, but i'm glad you're okay now! so NOW i'll make the joke! ear turned out fine, appendix not so much whomp whomp also, i believe what you call a bismarck is what we call a boston creme (if it's custard-y) or a jelly donut (if it's jam) up in the northeast! final bit :0) - the last time i went to the ER was last year around this time, in early/mid March. as you can probs figure out, we were getting concerned that I might have contracted covid because I had just been on a plane for a short holiday in canada. a few days later my fever shot up to 104 at night, so my parents took me to the ER. after some waiting and testing, we found out that thankfully it wasn't covid, just the flu, which was a Huge relief. i eventually recovered that weekend on saturday, and the monday right after that, everything went into lockdown. it was a very odd time.

If there is anyone like me who has issues - panic, PTSD, or its just a not okay thing to watch for you - with people visibly in pain, skip from 5:10 to 8:28. Its just Stephen explaining the pain and the severity while looking and sounding in a shit ton of distress and pain and I know I can't watch that because of PTSD reasons.
I have Panic Disorder and PTSD, and even knowing that Stephen is okay now, I probably shouldn't have watched that (watched it right after the vlog came out, so I didn't know at the time). Thumbing up your comment so other people hopefully will see it and avoid any panic/PTSD issues.

and off course the reason why this video pains so many to watch, empathy we are fans of this man, many of us has had him as part of our daily lives for years, and when we see him in pain our empathy what normal people have that helps them with the real world by not being jerks and allowing them to be in groups, well the same survival tactic hits them hard when someone that they care about is feeling horrible.
I feel really bad for Steven and this had to been really bad but I feel really bad for Mal as well. You don't know what it's like to watch your partner in this much pain and not know what's wrong.

My older sister had her appendix burst a few years ago. It was during the swine flu epidemic, so the doctor just assumed it was that. Her appendix burst and she had to have serious surgery and stayed in the hospital for 3 weeks during her senior year of highschool.

Being a chemotherapy patient to get rid of my Leukemia, I am no stranger to emergency hospital visits. Be it fevers or sudden bleeding or even fatigue, sucks that you had to experience this Stephen but I'm glad that you're better now. Shoutout to modern medicine right?
I hope that your chemotherapy goes well and your health improves. My sister is 35 now after being diagnosed with leukemia at age 6, and though some of it has been hard and really sucked, she's making a great life for herself.

That was tough to watch. Brought back some unpleasant memories of the time when I had appendicitis. The pain is ridiculous. On top of that I got blood poisoning after the surgery, which was just great. I'm glad everything went well with you Stephen.

Going with the question of the vlog, my only experience with the ER is my inflamed appendix when I was 8. My abdominal pain wasn't as bad as Stephen's got (I've had period cramps that were worse. Class 10 pain, sweating and sitting in the fetal position, etc) but I did throw up quite a bit before I got to the hospital. Getting the IV didn't bother me any. Going under was weird to me because it was like I closed my eyes for 30secs and it was done. I won a small toy from BINGO the next day and played a little 2D Sonic in the hospital's game room and watched Hercules for the first time in their little theater. It was somewhat annoying to have to drag my IV everywhere, but I had my mom with me every step of the way. My mom ended up checking me out of the hospital a few days early because they were giving me too much morphine, making it so I lost my appetite, but they wouldn't listen to my mom's request to lessen it. After that I had stiff legs if I sat too long, giving me a bad limp, because the surgery and stitches were near my right thigh. It concerned my teacher when I went back to school but I assured her it was fine. Overall it was a good experience thanks to all the effort that goes into children's hospitals to make the experience less unfun.
Yeesh, I've had cramps that bad, too! Like, in bed all day, "being stabbed with an ice pick" bad.
Oh!!! My heart goes out to Past Stephen and Past Mal!!! I know everything turns out all right, but what a scary and painful event!!!
I ended up having an emergency c-section after spending two days in the hospital trying to induce labor. The worst part was the epidural. My body was shaking involuntarily as they're sticking a gigantic needle all the way up my spine, and of course that's when my contractions decided to REALLY kick in. After an hour of pushing, the doctor told me I was doing everything correct, but he still wasn't descending. I was wheeled into surgery, and what felt like minutes later, I saw the most perfect little boy in the whole world. The doctor said his arm was stretched up by his head, and that's what caused him to be stuck.
Not the time yet but at the time I'm watching this, it's 1:27am on my birthday. I am now 20. Not the ideal vlogs to watch but hey, I'll take it! :) BTW, Stephen, great job on managing to catch up with vlogs. Started watching since October 2016 and am still waiting for the day you finally catch up! Keep up the great work!

I'm so glad you were able to recover from this Stephen. Appendicitis is one of my biggest fears. Also, it is so dumb how much any medical institution makes you wait. I live near one of the best hospitals and medical systems in the country and they still make you wait a long time.

It is clear how much pain you were in when you were in the car, especially since you seem to never show any normally at all. I'm just glad that you seem better now. Just remember Stephen that if money is a problem, don't be afraid of asking for help of the watchers because we will back you up if needed.
The idea of my appendix bursting scares me to no end sometimes. I've actually had a few times where I had a mild pain and assumed the worst, even going to the hospital to be checked. That said, hearing Stephen's description of where the pain occurs helps. Also, hearing that after 7 hours at home and 6 hours in the ER you were still able to get things settled is another relief. (I would still act fast if I think it's happening to me, but I won't be nearly as panicked now if it does.)
Also, 2023 here. Journey's still moving along nicely.

When I was 13 I had a really awful bout of abdominal pain. My dad took me into the ER, since I was in so much pain I could hardly stand. They were convinced it was my appendix. After all the testing, turns out it was a cyst on my ovary. Flash 10 years forward, and I have been dealing with cysts ever since, and diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Meaning I deal with pretty bad pain, most every day. Most cysts come and go on their own, but the beginning of April I had to go under to get a goofball sized dermoid cyst removed. Yaaaaaay hospitals. All I can say is because of my frequent doctor, specialist, and hospital visits, I am so thankful to be Canadian.
On the last day of our spring break trip last year, my friends and I were sitting in our hotel room watching a movie and packing when I got intense pains like you were describing. I thought it was my appendix so we went to a random hospital emergency room in Florida at around 1:00 AM and they took me back and did a CT. Turned out to be a kidney stone that had lodged itself in the part of my kidney that connects to the tubes that go to the bladder. There wasn't much they could do except let it pass on its own, so they gave me some IV pain meds and sent me home with some Percocet. Definitely an experience I won't forget! I've been waiting to watch this vlog since you announced on Twitter that it had happened. I'm very glad you're okay now!
I had my appendix removed last August. I know the pain and when you were explaining everything, I could just feel the pain again. I also just did not want to go to the hospital but when I finally did, I was like thank god! Sorry that happened to you, but I'm glad you're alright!

I'm glad you're ok. This actually broke a few misconceptions I had about the appendix. I was surprised the pain actually subsided a bit for instance. Really glad the doctors got it out and your recovery went well.
Oh my goodness! Even though we didn't have video of you screaming in pain, I can just imagine how that was for both you and Mal. And a special amount of empathy for being stuck in an ER waiting room/back room for such a ridiculous amount of time, because I went through that recently as well. Especially due to that CT scan! Those always have such a heavy backlog! I'm kinda glad we know you're ok since the vlogs are behind and you've been doing well since, but geez I know how terrifying that much pain is, especially when you don't know what your issue is.

My brother's appendix almost burst in 2014, and let me tell you, he *NEVER* acts like he's sick. Except that time, and it was scary. He has a photographic memory, and doesn't remember most of the experience.
My brother got admitted very quickly, and essentially the first person they talked to was the anesthesiologist, which was a surprise for them. I can't imagine needing to wait 4 hours.

Now that I experienced this myself (Well, I'd be in Mal's place) because my mum suddenly grew in pain suddenly and it made me think of this vlog and it may have saved my mum's life. I kept telling her "Please, get this checked. Your pain reminds me of Stephen!"

Back in May of this year I had an emergency ER visit while I was with my mom in Philadelphia (I’m from Phoenix, so not a familiar city for me). My heartbeat was extremely erratic, ranging from 110-130 bpm and would change on a dime. I was also in severe pain in my upper chest and all up and down my left arm. My mom despite my protests took me to the ER where the test results confirmed I was not having a heart attack (luckily) but otherwise came up inconclusive other than above-average WBC count, which made sense because 2 days later I woke up with a really bad sinus infection. Not sure if being sick was related to my heart issue but I have no history of heart problems and have not had an issue since 🤷🏼♀️. I know this vlog is a few years old now but I’m glad you’re okay Stephen!
Oh Stephen. I'm at 7:45 right in the middle of your car ride with "food poisoning" I feel your pain -- 7 hours (bless your heart) -- literally. I remember that ride to the ER all too well. Every bump felt like an electric shock right to to gut. (I had a BUMPY 1 hour trip to the closest trustworthy hospital). I have to commend your dedication to us, your viewer family. I remember not thinking clearly, not wanting to be bothered with anything because I was in so much pain. You rock! BTW, this is probably the closest experience you are able to have to compare to labor pains. Just sayin ;)

Jesus Christ. I just had a flashback of my experience with my appendix when I was 6 years old. Coming back from school, eating dinner, and suddenly it strikes and it doesn't stop. It wasn't until 8 at night when my parents took me to the hospital and realized my appendix was inflamed. I remember the doctor injecting me with the IV needle. "Ow, Ow" I complained when the needle went in. And then I was out cold. Then I woke up and had a popsicle.
I had my appendix out when I was 8 years old, and it was actually really scare because my mom was out of state when it happened. But the thing that broke my heart about the whole thing was missing a second grade field trip to a local dinosaur museum
That would break my heart too, bummer! It's like the time I busted my knee and didn't get to see the boats at the marina. I had a huge hole in my knee, on the way to the ER, and the thing that bothered me most was I didn't get to see the boats!
Looking back at this, it now reminds me of a recent happening when I had sepsis. I felt fine one hour, but the next, I was freezing cold with nothing being able to warm me. I was told we'd have to wait about four hours more (up to that point, I'd already been feeling insane chills, body pain, etc., for about four hours) to go to the doctor's. At that point, I knew it couldn't wait any longer, but even getting up from my bed and into the car took so, so much energy.
I remember being in the ER and just waiting and waiting and waiting, then being taken to an "actual" hospital room as Stephen says himself here. I'd calmed down by then and had been feeling better, but it rather quickly became pretty miserable. This was in the midst of the pandemic last year, and so visitors were very limited. I could barely sleep during the day due to people coming in and out to help mend me. Getting up to go to the bathroom was awful, as that IV machine was stuck to me and would make a horrendous beeping noise if it didn't have a correct angle into my vein. I had to urinate about every hour, so I just gave up and did it in the plastic jug I was given for that. My OCD was ravaging me all the while, and I'd almost never felt so atrocious. But just as bad as all that, it was so, unbelievably, boring: I had to spend five days basically by myself in a hospital room with my phone and a tv, and that was it. There might certainly be worse deals out there, but being connected to a machine and pretty stuck to the bed made any desire to use my phone practically nonexistent; the tv didn't regularly have anything particularly interesting playing, either.
It was a rough five days, but it wasn't the worst of human suffering that goes on in a hospital; all things considered, I'd say I had it pretty well, honestly. Just certainly not a desire to ever do again.
Man it was so difficult to watch h you in so much pain I cannot even imagine what it was like for Mal. and especially for you being in so much pain. Really did feel like a horror movie but actually scarier.

I've had pain issues before (never to this point, but I sorta understand) and at least in my case whenever it got really bad the best I could do was curl up into a ball on my bed. Speaking would be out of the question (for reference I once broke 7 bones and I didn't realize and never went to the doctor's for it) But if it helped Stephen then good, but it sounded like it made it really hard for him.

He could've just had Mal explain the situation while driving or while they're in the hospital room (not the waiting room because I'm sure recording was the last thing on their minds then), but nooooo, he's so darn dedicated that he updates us himself after enduring 7 hours of pain.
I felt the exact same way when I had pancreatitis, the pain gets to be too much and you can hardly breath.
I know how tough it is to make the call to go to the ER but I'm so glad you made it in time and have made a full recovery since. I've had 2 emergency hospital stays, one with each of my pregnancies. Both times I was admitted and had to stay 7 days with my daughter and 30 days with my son. Not great experiences but everything turned out okay in the end. :)
It was the year 2015, I had just started a second job at a bookstore, and Christmas was around the corner. Both stores were having parties for the employees, and due to me messing up my schedule a little, I had to have one shift swapped for another. I ate so many subs at the bookstore's party, knowing that I wasn't going to get a chance to make a meal between jobs, and wanting to save money. Little did I know that I, along with 19 other employees, was about to get major food poisoning.
I vomited at work, and had to rush home. Not such a great day after your birthday. When I got home I again rushed to the bathroom, and paid tribute, only to hear my sister yelling my name. Turns out I passed out while emptying my stomach. This continued throughout the night. At one point I even fell out of my bed and smashed my head onto the dresser.
And now I'm afraid of subway

I have to go the hospital on Monday for a week for cancer treatment and this was not the vlog to watch... Everything was so achingly familiar. I'm glad this is a rare occurrence for you, Stephen.
I couldn't help but notice the machine you decided to sing along to. That's weird how that pump machine was so loud compared to those I've been hooked up to. I've had to deal with those pump machines for three years, and not once was there one that made such a sound. I got some transfusions at a slow rate, and others in less than an hour.
I wonder how old that machine is.
God, watching this was painful, I nearly began crying just hearing how much pain Stephen was in. I've had to go to the ER twice for kidney stones and while I don't think they're on the same level of pain, I know all too well how much pain it takes to go to the hospital that you're screaming and crying. I'm glad that things are alright now, but even knowing you were okay now didn't stop me from feeling so scared about what was happening.
I can totally agree with your sentiments about not wanting to go to the ER. I've had Crohn's Disease for 11 years and I've had many many trips to the ER and it is not a fun place. The worst time was when my doctor sent me down to the ER and I ended up waiting EIGHT hours in the place, only to be told it would be AT LEAST another 24 hours before I got a room (pro-tip, never go to an ER in a big city) so my mom and I literally walked out of the ER, drove to a closer one, and were placed in a room almost immedietly (don't go to an ER in a big city).
So yeah, ERs are awful, awful places, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go because it's going to suck a lot more if you don't.
I used to get the stomach bug every year and had to go get IVs because I couldn't keep anything down. Other than that, I was an idiot as a kid and ate cucumbers after getting my tonsils out and broke the scabs and had to be rushed to the ER.
I am laying down right now due to a stomach ache. I decided to watch this vlog day while I'm laying down...bad idea.
I had some abdomen pain issues some time back where I would have pain for a day or so every couple of months. It didn't really bother me too much, but one time it ended up lasting for a lot longer than usual and the pain was also worse, although luckily not as bad as yours, Stephen.
I went to the ER and ended up staying a night there because they weren't sure what was causing the pain, and then the next day I was sent to a bigger hospital were I ended up having laparoscopic surgery (they basically just go in and look) and also removed a cyst, which seemed to be the culprit.
I was in hospital for three days total, and it would probably not have been too bad if it weren't for the fact that both of the nights I spent there I shared rooms with some people who were either in a lot more pain than I was, or had issues that made them puke through the night.
Good thing Mal talked him into going to the ER. Also, Stephen's dedication to recording his life is amazing, but it was really hard to watch when he was clearly in so much pain.
I was hospitalized for a week for pneumonia when I was four. I don't know if it was an emergency. All I recall was my biological mom having to leave to go home and check on my brothers and pack an overnight bag and me reaching out for her as she left. She never was the hugging and comforting type so I always had a fear of her leaving and not coming back until I got older and slowly grew apart from her both physically and emotionally. At least she brought me my favorite stuffed animal so I had something to hug. On another note though, this shows how much you guys mean to me because I can never watch someone I love/care about be in pain without tearing up. I'm just glad you're all right!
I feel you on the being afraid of my family leaving me thing. At least you had a stuffed animal with you, though; that always makes things better, at least for me personally. 😊
for someone who had a ruptured appendicitis when she was 9, when you said you had appendicitis, I was a little scared to say the least. I'm glad that you came out of it okay, Stephen and thank you Mal for the updates via Twitter *hugs*
My first emergency room visit was when I was about 6 years old. I was running and tripped on something, and I landed on my elbow the wrong way. That dislocated my humerus and I had to get some metal rods in my elbow to stabilize it, and I had a cast for quite a long time. Luckily it was my left elbow and I'm right handed, but it still sucked, anyone who's had a cast will tell you that it sucks. Most of all, showering/bathing, you have to have a plastic bag over your arm while you shower.
Dang, I'm sorry you had to deal with all that! I remember when I had my appendix removed, the pain beforehand was unbearable. The vlog was pretty intense, but I'm just glad you were okay in the end.

I've had my appendix out, so I understand what you went through. They gave me the pain/10 too. I didn't quite pass out, but I almost did, right when I got to the hospital. They had to give me a wheelchair. I was lucky enough for mine to start right when I woke up that day, and to get a doctor who instantly said "Appendix, go to the hospital now". Definitely a really, really awful thing to go through, but at least you only ever have to go through it once.
Stephen, I had my appendix removed, too. It was 2012, and I was visiting extended family in Malta when me, my brother and my mum all caught a Chest Virus that was going around that European Winter and this was at the end of the holiday. My Brother and my mum were blessed that it went away, not like me. It then moved into my stomach making me take like 3 different tablets to hopefully make it go away before i had to sit on a plane for 24 hours to get back home to Australia. (Yes 24 hours + an 8 hour layover in Dubai). However that didn't work and I still had stomach cramps by the time we had to leave. While on the plane I ate nothing cause the only thing I could have eaten was soup and they didn't serve it. When i got back home to Aus that day i had no stomach cramps which was the first time in 11 days that it didn't happen. But the next day i woke up with a really aching back. I woke my parents up to take me to the local hospital at like 9am. We were there from 9am till about 5pm and from that time all we got was "Your back is fine, your sick and your going through puberty so as a result your feeling the pain in your back, we're worried about your stomach." So the sent us to the Big Children's Hospital in the city from there I had to have my pee tested and I even had an ultrasound to see what was the problem before, finally at 12am the found out that my appendix had blown up. So than at 3am I got it removed. But still to this day I have no idea what caused my appendix to blow up, the best rumour we came up with was maybe I wasn't used to having the European medicine and having so much of it in my stomach caused it to blow up, but hey I'll never know. And then I had some more crazy things happen while in hospital for 2 weeks. Mainly the new issue was the doctors were extremely worried at how skinny I was as a 13 year old weighing an amount no 13 year old should way. They were that worried they thought my parent's were not feeding me, there were trust. But it's just in my family all of us boys are really skinny and that was it. :P so yeah that's my one and only hospital story and it's a fricken crazy one

The only time I have ever personally been in the hospital was after my car wreck. Totally didn't need it at all, but whatever. Got to be strapped down in a gurney in an ambulance and wheeled into the hospital, where they had me lay down on a bed in the hall because the rooms were all full.
All things considered, I recovered from it super fast, especially for how violent the crash was. No serious injuries and I was still able to stand (for HOURS) at my sister's wedding a few days later.
Dam this scared.. you were so happy vlogging all of sudden stephen dieing in the car.. glad your safe and better now even your vloging in 2021... yes I'm re watching your years through this pandemic... be safe!

oh god Steven, you scared me! I was expecting more build up to your appendix, not that sudden. I'm so sorry this is happening, and i hope you get better.
The only time I went to the ER was last year. It was a combination of a panic attack and some IBS symptom. I've had horrible stomach troubles before and was worried that it had returned. Worrying about that and the panic attack... That was not a fun time.
Just about 2 months before this vlog I went to the ER around noon for stomach pain that had me up at 3 am, and what made it ironic was I had this problem but not as severe and until this time I never had any nausea and I was about a week from a doctor visit to figure out what was causing it. So after they ran tests they found out 2 things, 1 was that the pain was a gallstone that got stuck in the bile duct that required a ERCP, and 2 was that my gallbladder needed to be removed. It went well but after the ERCP which was the next day, I was stuck there for 2 extra days before my gallbladder removal because I had inflammation, and coming out of the surgery I had a fever so I had to stay an extra day chocking up a full 6 days stuck there. Hopefully neither of us have a reason to go back, glad to know everything went well.

holy boly that turn in the vlog was scary, good thing it was an appendix which when removed means you heal your body heal.
this is why im staying in Massachusetts. We have doctor that can tell by looking at the patient and figuring out the symptoms what the problem is. My sister would have had brain damage if not be dead from her appendix bursting in the trash bag, seconds after being removed, if it wasn't for the doctor figuring it out before her cat scan. If your pain is 10/10, its an automatic emergency and your in a bed within seconds here in Massachusetts
There was one time a few years ago when my teeth started hurting really bad while I was home alone. At first it was just a light sting, but after an hour or two it was bursts of mind crippling pain where I couldn't do anything but try to endure it until it passed. A few months before I'd gotten my wisdom teeth removed and hadn't used up all the medication, so when my parents came home I told them I wanted to take the medication again and have them schedule an appointment for me the next day. On my way back to my room the pain came back and I fell down in the hallway. My sister found me crying and punching the ground involuntarily and ran to get my parents. My dad got all upset that I wouldn't respond when he asked me questions, but I couldn't process what he was saying, much less answer whatever he was asking. The pain eventually passed in less than two seconds and I stood up on my own, took the pill (which doubled as a narcotic, praise the Lord), got ready for bed, and passed out right as the next wave of pain was approaching.
My mom woke me up in the morning and had scheduled an emergency appointment for me at the dentist in an hour. They found out that one of the nerves under my teeth had died and the tooth had to be removed so they could perform surgery on it. I didn't have a job at the time so it was monetarily frightening too, but the pain was so intense that I didn't care if it drained me of five years of income to pay off an overdue bill if it came to that. Aside from a memorable scar, I've never had such intense pain in my life.
The good news is that my dental hygiene habits improved significantly after that point.

As someone who lives in a small town and never really had to wait very long in the ER, I always am shocked at the extreme waiting times for people in the city.
For emergency hospital adventure, it actually happened a few months ago. I dislocated my knee while walking back to class in campus. My faculty called for an ambulance and we went to the ER to check on what happened. And that was the first time I was admitted to the hospital.
Several months later in August, I finally got a surgery, and had both my left and right knees relocated.
When I got appendicitis, the pain started while I was out at Swiss Chalet with my grandmother and visiting Aunt. I thought I had just eaten too much or something, so I stayed quiet about the pain until we dropped off my grandmother and made it back home over an hour later, then went straight to bed. The next day, I walked to the hospital near me and was misdiagnosed and prescribed some antibiotics. A day later, I went back and they transferred me to a larger hospital under the assumption it was something with my uterus. Eventually I was properly diagnosed and treated for a burst appendix but by then I couldn't have surgery because of the infection. I ended up in the hospital a second time because I got so nauseous from cipro I couldn't take it. I learned later that apparently the doctor had told my mother it was touch and go, though I never once felt I was going to die. But misdiagnosis is a thing, so if you ever think something's wrong or you're not getting better, don't be afraid to get a second opinion.
That wasn't the worst pain I'd ever felt though. That goes to gallstones earlier this year. Went to the hospital once right at the end of last year and then again later in January. The second time I got my gallbladder removed. That time, I really did feel like I was dying, even if it wasn't as lethal as the appendicitis was. The thing with the gallbladder is that the pain wasn't centralized. I had pain everywhere from my upper back to my ribs to my lower stomach.
I do have to say, one thing I've always been thankful for and I hope to continue having is the public healthcare here in Canada. The wait times might be atrocious, but I'm thankful I can go to the hospital when I think something's wrong and not have to worry about the bill.
I'm glad you went to the ER when you did. Had you waited it out it could have been bad with a ruptured appendix.
I remember needing to have an emergency hospital visit myself except it was due to my shunt in my back. Long story short it drains excess fluid from my brain to prevent headaches and the device was draining too much cause a bubble on my spine was severely life-threatening. And my doctor was two hours away too. Not fun

I remember getting mine taken out about.. hell 12 years ago at this point. It was a different experience than what Stephen experienced but it was just as bad. I wouldn't wish either kind of pain and sickness on anyone going through it myself. It was six days in the hospital and from the little bit I can remember now I think most of the time I just slept through it.
I don't mean to brush aside the serious condition Stephen had, but I cannot resist... 4k vlogs: reserved for vacation and emergency surgeries.

Thank goodness appendicitis is a one time deal. I haven't had it... yet, but I can imagine the pain people go through during the illness. I can imagine it isn't fun at all. I'm also grateful that doctors and surgeons found a way to cure it with laparoscopic surgery. It's less invasive and less messy, less painful, etc..
Yeah, Hospitals suck. I have a seemingly unsolvable seizure disorder and if I fail to take my meds consistently I tend to wake up in a hospital bed or ambulance with the first thing outta my mouth being an exasperated and defeated "Fuck." This most recent one was the worst however, it was the first one I had while on the meds and I actually hurt myself, and I was at work when it happened. It was just a cut above my right eyebrow and I got 3-5 stitches.
I was getting ready to help a customer then I fell backwards, head over heels almost, cut my brow on this metal thing meant to hold napkins, slammed into the tile floor, and then shook for 20-30 secs and was in the ambulance 20-30mins later. The only thing I remember was the customer then waking in the ambulance, thank god for surveillance cams it allowed me to see what happens to me for the first time.
Man, that sucks, dude. I hope you're feeling better and that they figure out what's going on.

I woke up one day and one of my, um, well, let's call them man cards was super swollen and it super painful to do anything, but it was day 1 of finals so I still went to school. well the next day (The day before my 18th birthday) the swelling started to spred so I waited for my dad to wake up and as soon as he did we went to an urgent care and all they did was get me in line at the ER. We got to the ER and the after about an hour I had a ultrasound done. About an half an hour after that a doctor came in my room and told me that I had to have my man card either repaired or removed. Another 45 minutes later and I was knocked out for only 2 hours. When I woke up my doctor through my parents told me that it had to be removed because I waited too long to get it looked at. At least I'll never forget my 18th birthday.

final bit :0) - the last time i went to the ER was last year around this time, in early/mid March. as you can probs figure out, we were getting concerned that I might have contracted covid because I had just been on a plane for a short holiday in canada. a few days later my fever shot up to 104 at night, so my parents took me to the ER. after some waiting and testing, we found out that thankfully it wasn't covid, just the flu, which was a Huge relief. i eventually recovered that weekend on saturday, and the monday right after that, everything went into lockdown. it was a very odd time.
