I cannot thank you enough for finally being one of the few channels to really talk about the music and vocals like how they deserve to be talked about. You're using all the right terminology to do so and I think many people who either play music or who sing will 1000% appreciate you for this. It's refreshing to see a ktuber actually talk about the music/vocals beyond the whole "omg lyrics/mv so deep" bit. I know you're likely putting that in part 2, but this part 1 is what I would love to see more in ktube 😭❤So thank you!!

This song evokes so many emotions in me. Leez and Ollunder really outdid themselves. I also really appreciate how much they were able to use the members strengths in this song. Handongs voice really is so perfect for her line. But also using Jiu as a back up vocal for the lighter parts, because of the softness of her voice just makes those parts dreamier. I love that they choose no real rap for this song. Everything just fits. Also side note the Leez Version of this song is literally insane and I really miss him as a producer for Dreamcatcher.

The prechorus of Deja Vu is probably one of my favorite parts in a kpop song ever. The way it builds tension with the addition of more instruments and then the quick moment of silence, coupled with the gorgeous vocals, is brilliant. I'm glad this video gave it, and the rest of the song, the attention and love it deserves.

So you're telling me, that my feeling of Deja Vu involving the beginning and end of this song, isn't just a feeling, but is actually a clever implementation of music theory?! I knew I should have valued my instincts more😅
I had once stumbled upon a 'Boosted backing vocals' video of 'Deja Vu' without meaning to. The choirs and harmonisation really blew me away, but I just couldn't describe it like you did here.
After listening to this song(and getting my mind blown repeatedly every single time)continuously for 3 years, and thinking it's a masterpiece for the whole time without being able to put down the reasons properly, this video soothes me greatly. You have successfully comveyed my vague feelings and emotions into an actual breakdown and explanation, so THANK YOU SO MUCH for that😊
I am not a regular viewer of your channel. I am, however, an avid lover of Dreamcatcher and share your opinion about 'Deja Vu', so I had to click on this video. I also love all things related to music theory, and musical breakdowns of my favourite kpop songs are hard to come by, so double the fun for me😁
While I would not complain about a 40 minute long video if the topic is 'Deja Vu', splitting it into two parts sounds like a good idea. This allows the viewer to go back to the song after each video to focus on each aspect a little more than the others.
Can't wait for more of the geeking out about this beautiful piece of art. Stay safe and healthy!

This was brilliantly done! I love how much depth you went into the composition! I’m completely tone deaf, so I can’t comment on the chord progressions and key changes. It was great hearing someone able to thoroughly elaborate on it! What I can say is that I appreciate the key changes being relatively simple compared to some songs (cough cough every SME song that goes through every melodic and harmonic chord progression within one 2.5 minute song…).
But seriously, you did such an incredible song with this! ❤️

    • @catchingteez
      @catchingteez  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you! I'm curious, can you still tell when key changes happen despite the tone deafness? You mentioned how SM songs sound more chaotic to you still so I was wondering how you sense that

@@catchingteez I make mashups on my main channel. So, I can detect when the key changes. But let’s say I need to test a song for what key it’s in, it’s near impossible to do. I have to rely on websites and software to give me an idea as to where to start. But even if I’m on the right key, I might not be able to tell because it’ll sound too similar to another one. This is especially difficult when keys are in less conventional modes. For example, I think “28 Reasons” by Seulgi is in some offset of C minor. But while I tried testing it, it kept sounding more similar to F minor to me. When I went to put it in a mashup, I could tell it was clashing too much with everything else. But I couldn’t tell what key to transpose it into. I need one of my friends (who’s really good with keys) to tell me what key to use it as.
They had to do the same thing for songs like ChiII KiII, Glitch Mode, Red Light, etc. SME production will be the death of me lol

Okay, so before watching the video, the music theory nerd in me wanted to gush really quickly about the major 7 chord used that quickly follows the word "pain" in "oh now, I'm holding this pain." While major 7 chords tend to be pretty commonplace in all sorts of songs, we may not notice a certain dissonance to it until we isolate it down to nothing but the 4 core notes. This is mainly due to the existence of a half step (in this case of a Dbmaj7 chord, playing a C natural and the D flat right above it simultaneously). So while the dissonance of the major 7th may be overshadowed when a song may typically add multiple instrumentals, multiple parts, and/or emphasize the more harmonious parts of the chord in different octaves, hearing this chord during the minimalist ballad section of Deja Vu with barely anything but a piano definitely emphasizes the dissonance in the perfect way in my opinion. It's like the perfect bittersweet sound that's expressed by the lyric's portrayal of sorrow thinking of the memory of someone who's no longer there.
I guess the analogy I'd think of is thinking of a major 7th chord kind of like lemonade. It may usually be seen with enough water and sugar while we're still able to make out that it's lemonade. But when isolated with little more than its core components, the sourness is more pronounced.

    • @catchingteez
      @catchingteez  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Major 7 chord supremacy. I love that lemonade analogy

Deja Vu is my favorite Dreamcatcher song and I think it always will be given that LEEZ has left the company. LEEZ and Ollounder created that song and their partnership created Dreamcatcher's most iconic songs. I like Ollounder's work, but LEEZ brought something that is missing now, a certain romantic softness which is most evident in his piano part in Deja Vu. Ollounder is a rocker while LEEZ is more of a ballad guy. I thought I was the only one who listened to his guide for Deja Vu. I wish the company would upload all of them.

This song is masterpiece! This video is masterpiece! Also really educational for me who is really interested in music theory. Deja vu is one of my favourite song of dream catcher after scream and silent night. It's really special. There are so many genres mixed together in this like ballad, rock and orchestra.
    The producing is insane.
The vocals are so good, that i cannot imagine any other group to pull this off (except for certain vocal groups)
The first half of the prechorous which handong sings is heavenly, and the other half with gahyeon & jiu sings are really empowering. It sounds like really heartbreaking song along with encouragement (for example killing your cheating husband in the 1800s and drinking wine after that). Can't wait for the next video which has my favourite part, THE LORE. Anyways, if you want to try out any other girl groups, then please check out red velvet and gidles music (i think u might have already, so in the future please make video about them too. Especially for feel my rhythm and oh my god) so I've been really getting into some intros and outros of kpop groups (this was after hearing declaration by ATEEZ)
So far with best intros & outros i heard were by Ateez, dreamcatcher, g friend and loona. The one that really left me feeling very heart clenching was intro from the new pop album by Aseul.

This song is literally magical. It's anthemic and wounding simultaneously, it's atmospheric, something about it reminds of me of fantasy stories where the MCs love each other but a world-splitting threat will keep them apart and the only thing left of their love will be feelings of loneliness and lingering pain without knowing where that pain comes from. A deja vu that can't be explained.
I love songs like Deja vu that can allow me to feel but also to world build in my head, bc I love songs without them making me feel or think as much Deja Vu does. Dreamcatcher's music doesn't always hit for me but Deja Vu is a masterclass in building anticipation with music-the chorus literally makes you want to run in a field with tall grass or slay a dragon. It makes you feel the emotions the vocalists are portraying. I just love it so much lol.

I am biased but this also is an arguable fact. DC production by this time had mastered the genre mesh. Yes, other groups also did this type of production. Some did good, some got passing mark, but most failed to do it well i.e transition is awkward, no key change to refresh the energy, etc.
And to me, story telling in MV and lyrics is DC specialty. Other than some ballad songs, there is still no artist/group that can satisfy me in this category.

So first of all, thank you for making this video. You touched on a lot of points I really enjoy about this song (and you saved me the work of organizing all of that into a video).
About 8:04... So I am not going to yell, just share my thoughts. ;)
Since the first half of the third chorus is harmonically the same as the other choruses, just a minor third up, I feel like it makes sense to say that it is in Ab minor (or G# minor enharmonically, which is probably how you came to B major). That makes sense especially when considering the Eb major chord right before the final chorus - it is the dominant chord of Ab.
Of course the modulation into that key is quite abrupt, given that we just shift out Eb major chord (normal in key of F minor) up a half step (to E major, or to keep it related to the key of Ab, an Fb major chord), and then to F# or Gb. From that point, one could easily go to B major, but the following Eb and repeated harmonic structure of the previous choruses leaves it feeling more Ab minor to me.
The beauty about looking at it in Ab minor is: In all choruses we get the chords (in minor) VI-VII-i-I. In the first two that's Db-Eb-Fmin-Fmaj [with lots of suspensions going on.] Then the major 3rd is immediately turned minor again. So it appears to be just another case of modal mixture in K-pop - but there is more behind this major shift, because in the final chorus we get the same progression, but this time we stay on that major third. Thus we have Fb-Gb-Abmin-Abmaj! And as you pointed out, Abmaj is relative to Fmin, and the rest of the final chorus is in F minor, I would argue, with Ab-Db-C-Fm aka III-VI-V-i (The C major as dominant to F, and also Ab is sec. dominant to Db.) clearly grounding us back in the original key.
So from my point of view, the key changes once to Ab minor, and then quickly back. But it is a very effective change that is one part of what elevates the final chorus, and the way back is quite elegant, imho.
I hope this doesn't come across as criticism, I just wanted to share what I believe is happening harmonically. :]

Some nice pastoral and village shoots at the beginning and then when the genre change comes the evil explodes onto the screen and we get the fight scenes. Would not be suprised at all if anime music is where the original inspiration comes from.

Happy 7th Dreamcatcher Anniversary!🥳🎉 Oh boi! I enjoyed every second of that video. I want to give you my BIGGEST thanks for making an amazing Musicality breakdown of Dreamcatchers song Deja Vu. Dreamcatcher is my ult group, I just started stanning them during Bonvoyage but casually listened since piri times. And I absolutely love it when people gush about the wonderful mind boggling music of Dreamcatcher, cause same (its wild). Plus I love talking about music, to the point I took a music class in college just because its so interesting and fun to learn about, so this video was right up my alley.
Something that you pointed out that was new to me, was 21:13 the differentiation of the adjusting key changes and harmonies of the first and last choruses. 21:19 Lower harmonies are almost non-existent in the last chorus as they are in the first chorus, smoothing out the finally as it comes to its end. 22:01 But what really shook me was the high harmonies between the first and last chorus (that last chorus tho sheese). Whoever sang the high high harmony lines in the last chorus 22:06 "nae jeonbureul geolgoseo, Apeun sangcheoga gipeojeodo, Modeun sungandeuri kkumin geotcheoreom" is insane, that blew my mind I never noticed that voice or how high it went. I went back to listen to that exact part on spotify, you can barely hear it if you listen closely. If I had to make a guess I'll say its either Siyeon or SuA (cause sua can reach some crazy dolphin notes just by messing around). 11:42 - 13:20 Also the✨🌈Relative Scales🌈✨ I think I saw a old comment talking about how the key changes would come full circle like Deja Vu (I never understood until you explained it), its such a sick touch to the whole song. You said it perfectly 12:37.
Again I would like to say THANK YOU for making this video and I cant WAIT for the part 2.

She litteraly put on screen that she deeply apologises for her Korean at the 7:38 mark. Relax a bit, don't be an ass, as long as you understood who she meant, communication accomplished.

@kattkatt744 Please there's no reason for usage of disrespectful terms here. I know why I wrote this comment (which I did with dull respect towards her). At least now she'll know how to properly pronounce her name. Wouldn't hurt to tell her how to do it better than letting her constantly mispronounce.

@@roudiblal2001 If you had respect for her you wouldn't have worded your comment like you did to start with. Using a term like "bugging me" in a respectful comment just isn't done. In addition you didn't catch that she apologised, showing you weren't paying attention. A much better way you could have gone about this if you actually were serious about helping with the pronounciation could be to say something like 'hey, don't be too nervous about the pronouciation, we all make mistakes. if you want to improve her is my tip for how to say siyeon'. No need to ever mention that you found her mistake irritating. Only building up instead of being an ass about it ;)

      1. I did pay attention, and I did hear her apologize. Again, my comment was not made to scold her, but rather teach her how to pronounce the name correctly.
      2. A bit of honesty in my comment wouldn't hurt because it did bug me a bit, but again... I wasn't intending to attack her personslly. However, I think I should've worded that better.
      3. Funny how you're trying to teach me how to communicate properly while this is your second time trying to tell me that I'm being "an ass" about it. Fix yourself first please.
      4. If she had a problem with my comment, I'm sure she could try to communicate with me about it, and I'll be open for that. Why are you so annoyed? Did you just create a little scene in your mind that I was being "an ass" to your favorite TH-camr?
      5. To show that I didn't mean any harm, I did also compliment her about the video, and it's s genuine compliment. I liked the video.
Please refrain from using disrespect terms when you're trying to show someone else the proper way to explain your idea

@@roudiblal2001 1) If you saw the apology why not aknowledge it in any way in your comment?
      2) Good that you realise you should have worded it better. That said the honesty you where doing in your first comment wasn't for anybody else than your own satisfaction and that is very seldom useful honesty.
      3) Ever heard the expression you reap what you sow? You where sowing a bad attitude in your orignal commnet, so you got somebody aplying the same kind of honesty back at ya.
      4) I am annoyed because I didn't do an minor in linguistics to see people kill other peoples attempts at foreign languages by bad teaching techniques.
      5) Yes you complemented, but it was also sort of backhanded, and nobody likes an backhanded compliment.
As to your ending paragraph, I refer back to 3, you reap what you sow...

I get a modern japanese style prog rock vibe. Just like Damien and Diamond. Notice all their prog rock sounding songs start with D.🤔
Dreamcatcher is the DREAM. For me this song is EPIC.🤘🥰🤘
I hope you get to listen to the live version one. This particular one below is spectacular.
