As I listened to the list, I could only think of the time sink that each feature on the list is. Like he said, each capital ship is probably a years worth of development by itself and I almost wonder if that’s an understatement with all of the other features that would have to be integrated in each capital ship. Each feature on this list could be two or three years of dev time. We might not see all of this completed for another couple decades.

@@MetaGearGames yeah considering the size of their ship team being less than 40 people, it doesn't seem realistic that they could focus on more than 1 cap ship at a time. If everything I listed out was being worked on at once then the timeline seems a little more realistic but a lot of this will need to be made in sequence. Still excited but not holding my breath for the Pioneer or Orion for like at least 3-4 years...

I wouldn't be surprised if they have had some of these features worked on to a lesser degree for SQ42. The amount of details that goes into dcs modules completely blows star citizen out the water, sure you can’t walk around massive spacecraft in dcs, but they’re 2 completely different games/sims, you can’t compare them. As is is right now star citizen interiors have little to no real functionality, graphics isn’t be all end all. 12:00 There's ONE thing no one is mentioning. CIG took the time to build some seriously powerful tools. They took the time to teach every one how to use them. What about in 5 years, will CR find another new goal that will require another cutting edge technology that will force them to rework everything, make new tools, train people on them, have their senior team leave and replace them, train those replacements...
SC community is doing it's best to convince CIG that empty promises and not delivering is just fine as long as they bring new and bigger empty promises. The broken PU we get is the result of that..

These being; rearming, refueling (they need to do the refueling cap ships), repairing, drones, cargo loading vehicles and tractor beams (they are working on the beams which is cool), armor storage as well as food, water and hygiene restocking of ships.

RE: the custom animations, during CitizenCon, one of the panels discussed that a lot of the more general animations like button presses are dynamically driven. So for every similar button press, there's a "cockpit button press" animation with a dynamic skeleton that simply does some inverse kinematics to make that animation reach the right final location. Obviously there are still a TON of bespoke animations and different animation archetypes, but they only have to produce each archetype once and then crashtest the IK system to make sure it can handle all the edge cases. Still a lot of work, but not quite hand keying every single button press.

Lots of games do more dynamic stuff like this so hopefully it works well and doesn't result in lots of weird clipping or arms getting all twitest up. It would be simpler if buttons were all in a front facing area but they are all over cockpits so the IK system will need to be pretty advanced.

I am also pretty sure if I worked there, the AI blades would be first out to test basics first since all they would have to do is properly operate a turret or 2.
I also think the AI crew will have to work first before we get the Capital ships. And would likely need at least the ability to travel between a few systems first as just giving players a capital or even some of the sub-cap ships would be OP in the current game for a lot of missions.

One major ship feature you forgot to mention is armor. Some ships like the Terapin and Carrack have movable armored panels that still have yet to be developed. Armor will be a vital key in ship combat as some ships will rely on shields and others will be less shielded and more heavily armored. They even mentioned armor in the Zeus MKII Q&A. Armor will also effect a ships mass, and in turn its maneuverability. Military ships will be more heavily armored and some will probably be impervious to the smaller guns in the game. Won’t do to have an Idris knocked out by a bunch of starter ships swarming it. So armor is another ship mechanic that probably should come sooner rather than later.

A LONG while ago they discussed the physical interaction with buttons in the world for things like elevators, screens, etc and that they would not need custom animations but use some form of IK. I'm doubtful, I've never seen it done really well & never seen it at all with a unified 1st/3rd person rig. I think they frequently set the bar too high - not only do they want more features than any game conceived, they also want each of those features to be complex yet also high quality. It's no wonder that this game will probably take 2 decades to wrap (though I expect some "soft-launch" with a great product a few years before all the gameplay professions or ships are done).

a reporting ship. hmm. could be used to expand the lore, perhaps have owners of the ship work for specific in game news companies and go around gathering stories that could potentially make their way into in game news broadcasts or articles, and into the lore entries of the galactepedia. it would allow players to have a greater role in the lore building of the universe, perhaps recording a massive org to org battle, reporting on a high profile race event, investigating ship wrecks or pretty much any kind of in game event either player related or NPC related. I see alot of interesting possibilities with that and I hope they do allow for some sort of story gathering gameplay that makes it's way into the lore of the game.

It's crazy and you even forgot to mention to other additions that will require work for each ship:
-Maelstrom destruction. Where every part of the ship that can break of needs to be defined, which is probably a TON of work for each ship
-Ship maps: From CitizonCon they talked about a whitelist of which parts of a ship are shown on the map/engineering station. This will probably also be setup by an artist manually
These two factors are the main reason why I don't believe that either Maelstrom nor the neu Star Map will make it into the game in 2024 (at least not the location maps, maybe they will release the star system maps seperatly)

Seeing as we know that a large portion of S42 focused employees have now been moved over to Star Citizen, I think that the pacing of late 2023, and all of 2024 should give us a much clearer picture of how long things will really take to be "complete" either way it's an exciting future we have to look forward to.

People don't realize just how long game development really takes. Most games have years of development before the first mention of them are made publicly. Cyberpunk was announced 10 years ago (and almost certainly began development before that), was released 2 years ago and arguably was only completed this year. Star Citizen Was announced 11 years ago, but with basically nothing done, and has gone on to become perhaps THE most detailed and complex game in history. Throw in the holy grail of real time server meshing, and I don't care how long it ultimately takes to be completed, I'm along for the whole ride. Well they already dont want solo players managing cap ships to be the norm. Will it be possible, to an extent, but not efficient and likely not long term manageable. Large cap ships are meant to be "group" content. Think of it like many current MMO's were you have dungeons meant to be tackled with a group and other dungeons meant to be ran as a raid with a large number of people. Different sizes of ships in my mind reflect this. Sure you can have NPC crew as well to fill in and help finish off and fill out your crew, but ideally the big ships are not meant for solo content.
I also think the large cap ships could and should function much like an orgs base of operations. Kind of like a mobile guild hall.

Has it taken a long time to get to this point? Yes.
Has it been a buggy and some times unplayable ride? Also yes.
But at the same time there has never been a game this ambitious. There's not a single other gam3 that's ever been made that has tried to incorporate all the things this game does, and certainly not in the same scope.

They also seem to overlook the fact that o ce CIG finally finishes all the tools to complete SC. They're going to be able to use them for ANY game afterward.
Imagine a fantasy world with the level of intricacies SC has. They'd have to work up a magic system, I'd imagine, but holy crap. It'd be unprecedented.
Or a Call of Duty style game with no contained maps, just modern-day combat in any location on earth and using real-world vehicle models.
The possibilities really are limitless. But all most people seem to see is how long its taken them to get the tech done and "why are they still making ships to sell?"

The thing is, I don't ever want a game I play to stop improving, to stop developing, to stop innovating and evolving. I don't ever see a 'Star Citizen 2' coming out. Because yeah, it may take another 20 years for us to see the real official launch of Star Citizen. But I don't care because even then, I'm going to be looking forward to the next 20 years after that.
I hope they never stop designing new ships and vehicles, new weapons, giving us new locations and filling out the worlds, adding new missions and storylines.
This is a game that can infinitely evolve, to the point that a single city could become its own game entirely. I've said it before, but imagine if just Loreville itself had as much or more content than the entirety of Cyberpunk. That's a future we could someday see.
I dream of the day where if I want to get into mining, I have 50 different ships to choose from, all of different designs, specialties, where some cross over, and there is no one choice for what I want to do. I'm new to the Star Citizen universe/journey or whatever you want to call it and have experienced a number of frustrating and annoying crashes or broken gameplay loops/mechanics BUT the level of detail in this game already is astonishing and I've had so many "Woah" or "holy fk" moments from the detail of the rivets and welding on a Cutter to having an unexpected sunrise on a moon whilst delivering a box.
The number of places I have not yet seen and the number of activities I haven't even tried yet is astonishing but the key thing to me is that in a world where most of the AAA gaming market has no ambition and creates cookie cutter BS games, the ambition and scope in Star Citizen is..........well.........compelling. Maybe I'm blinded by the games potential but I now understand why people have invested in this game and continue to do so.
I mean, where's the promise in a Ubisoft game? Where's the ambition? Where's the innovation? You have to look to the Indie games for that sort of thing and in that regard Star Citizen feels more "Indie" because it has lofty ambitions that it's striving to achieve.
I'm not a long suffering investor in this game, so to speak, but I now understand wholehearted why people have stuck by this game through thick and thin. My last point also being that even if I stopped playing today I've probably still go more value out of this game than many other game that I've spent more money on.

To an extent yes and they are adding ships with bigger cargo capacity recently.
However if you really just want the definitive Space Trucker experience I'd recommend Elite Dangerous.

I wouldn't hold your breath on waiting to see Vanduul capitol ships in the PU anytime soon. Not until we see the Star Systems that boarder Vanduul/UEE space anyway. Which is a very long way off.

So much love for this game let’s just make it all work 😅. I am confident now that most of the staff will be focusing on one game now 🎉🎉

As a massive fan of sci-if titles, I am hopeful for this game but am still waiting till a finished product is released. I am also sceptical of how large scale warfare will interact with some people having infinite free replacement ships while others have the logistical grind to maintain the effort, although with how long this has been in development, perhaps so few lifetime insurance ships will exist maybe they won’t be a factor. Again, glad to see development is continuing, enough people have already spent on this title that something has to come of it for their sake.

Also, as someone who hasn’t been following the game religiously, I’m curious as to what the company has spoken of for continued monetization after release, sci-if is a niche genre, and after the initial swell in sales on release, how do they plan to fund the large staff required to maintain a persistent world server. From server costs, to balance teams, bug fixers and so on, seems like this will be a rather expensive game to keep running.

LTI in the full game is the most basic insurance, you wont get your ship right away, might have to wait a couple days. And you'd lose all of your modules as well.

NPC AI are my most hyped feature, it will finally give me reason to buy bigger ships like the andromeda or argo mole

I can't wait for the chance to encounter an entire large org doing their thing operating out of a single bengal carrier or something. That would highlight the amount of manpower it takes to operate and makes the UEE military look far more threatening with their several bengals.
