Demonetisation happened in India 8th November, 2016 and not 10 yrs ago. And the PM's Jan Dhan Account Scheme for zero balance accounts was launched on 28th August 2014. Approximately 260 million additional bank accounts had been opened when demonetisation was announced.

And sorry! I don’t buy this argument that people would have taken bad advantage if the government had done it over a period of time because of a government is strong enough to envisage such schemes then it is also strong enough to enforce it! As for taking advantage, I personally know many who got their monies exchanged only because they had the right contacts.
PS - Inique ID scheme was launched by previous government and I remember, at that time, opposition (you know who) was against it tooth and nail… but this scheme came in real handy when they came to power! What an irony!

@@Critic224 no need to bug others. just watch it again and again until you get the connection between bank accts in 2014 & demonetization in 2016 on one side; and what was said in the podcast on the other side.
Jan-Dhan accts laid the ground for digital India, which in turn was accelerated by demonetization and later by Covid.
As for people with right contacts who managed to exchange hoarded cash, PM Modi castigated those responsible loud and clear.
A whole community of professional 'right contacts' also had their wings clipped somewhat later.

Petrol subsidy strategy was explained by your deputy finance minister and it seemed reasonable.
    1. Petrol subsidy is linked to the NIC card of eligible people.
    2. Each eligible person would be able to buy upto 10 liters of subsidized petrol in a month. But only 2 liters at a time. By capping liters available for subsidy at a time as well as in a month, you will minimize likelihood that person does not sell the petrol in open market since they actually need that much petrol for their own personal use.
    3. The argument that a land cruiser owner will get more subsidy than scooter owners is flawed for 2 reasons. Land cruiser owner would not be eligible for subsidy and in any case total liters of subsidized petrol is only 10 liters per month.
    4. The argument put forward that demand would expand at a lower price only holds true IF scooters and smaller cars got unlimited subsidized petrol. With subsidized petrol capped at 10 liters per month, the subsidy will not promote demand.
If I know this as an Indian woman interested in Pak economy and your expert doesn't, it shows you his level of expertise.
When he casually asked what will China do with Pakistsni port, he is clearly unaware of what they did to Sri Lanka's Hambantota port. They want to use it for Chinese navy for encircling India as part of string of pearls strategy.
Finally your guest talked about 3 types of loans in the context of default. But there is one more kind of loan repayment which is called operational credit. Money owed by Pakistsn to foreign airlines for service already rendered, to IPPs for electricity already consumed, to exporters whose goods have reached Pak shore but their LCs are not being retired, the Chinese company digging Thar coal who hasn't been paid. Pakistan has already defaulted on operational credit.
Your guest may be familiar with financial concepts but he is seriously deficient in operational knowledge needed to qualify as an expert. Very disappointed. Much lower standard than your usual guests.

Pakistan invested in China's pet projects in spite of its limited financial resources, with the belief that these projects would generate revenue for the country. However, these projects only benefited China. For instance, the Orange Line in Lahore was built at a cost of $58 million USD per km in 2015, while the Mauritius metro rail also opened in 2019, which was developed by India, and cost $18.5 million USD per km. India provided a line of credit without interest, while China provided a loan with a commercial interest rate. This decision-making process has been biased, particularly given India's status as a perceived rival in Pakistan.

Brillant stuff and I must pay my regards to Ammar Habib's articulation and easy to comprehend issues/conundrum faced by the country, it's sad that people him aren't behind the rudder of economic policy in Pakistab. If we are ever to see Pakistan climb out of this quagmire alive then we need people like him in policy.

It's amazing podcast, just sharing how the cashless experience has been in India across cities. I have been travelling from Mumbai, to Jaipur to Kolkata, didn't have a penny in cash , paid hotel bills , took cabs and auto rickshaw, had street food and at restaurants. No requirements of hard cash at all. But i think it's not because of demonstration. This cashless economy platform was initiated by Raghuram Rajan as governor of RBI and subsequent governors have pushed it further.

So, technically, it is not being bought, but it has been given to them like forever. Second, they will develop it not for commercial purposes rather for military purposes. So, stop thinking just from your 'economic' perspective.

    Very insightful!
However, I must add that exports entail a tax of 1% on revenue. However, the main problem with production in Pakistan lies in the lack of basic industries (we dont even produce screws and plastic) and skilled/technical human resource. and therefore the main raw materials would need to be imported. Hence, our productionw is not competitive in the international market. Our industries struggle to compete with imports even after protectionist measures, let alone competing in the international market.

This curbed the malpractice. They also capped the room rent to 7.5% of the coverage. This brought sanity and insurance companies to a large extent are not being cheated.

I mean can someone imagine a country without power or petrol with population size of 225 million people. It's not that easy which the guest is talking about. And one more thing is that there is no radicalized society in sri Lanka and Argentina like countries with gun culture and looking into the political crisis there will be chances of implosion. So it is not going to be so easy task.
