TORAJA - Death Cult of Indonesia - funeral, Rambu solo and Ma nene ritual.

  • Imagine your family spends over $250,000 for a funeral and then every year your corpse is exhumed for family photos? Well thats what happens in Tana Toraja regency on the island of Sulawesi, INDONESIA.
Join me as I explore this fascinating place where DEATH is celebrated, animals are sacrificed and the mummified remains are dug up.
I am on a journey through the island of Sulawesi, riding my Honda CB500X across this amazing island and this week I spend all my time dedicated to the Rambu Solo (funeral) and the Ma'Nene rituals.
Toraja funerals are fascinating, the amount of money, time and energy is incredible and it takes years to save up enough money for the funeral. The buffalo are very expensive and on some Rambu Solo there are as many as 200 buffalo killed.
The Ma Nene ritual is performed once a year in the highland villages where the whole family will attend and remove the body from the grave and rebound the corpse and coffin.
Join me in this Episode of INDOWILD where I get wild in Tana Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia.

As a Torajanese myself, I am proud that you went there by motorbike. I did something like that once in a year 8 years ago when I was still in college, and it brought back old memories from when I was still in Makassar. Good work mate. I found you in Kristian Hansen's video that you love traveling on motorbikes as much as he does. With your hard work until this day, you deserve more than 10 thousand subscribers or more and I hope so.
Be safe out there mate. My greetings from Manokwari, West Papua. 🙏🙏

I really enjoy seeing Tana Torarja again. I was lucky enough to be a part of these ceremonies, and see the Tau Tau and the caves, and children being buried high up in trees. Truly a experience the brave hearted should all see! I am growing some of the peppers from there now. Their called Kotakkon super hot. I will see how spicy when their ready to eat. Love being introduced to your work, from seeing you on Kristian's channel. Keep it up. Peace, Dennis

Hi Sam, i really love your video. As someone who have a mother which torajanese i often going back there but because of the busyness of my parents we couldn't stay longer than 3 days. About Rambu solo, I have mixed feelings about this lol because back then when i was child my grandfather siblings died and i have to see the buffalo thing which freak me out. The Buffalo was running crazily and there's also foreign people that getting scared and followed me running inside the bamboo tent 😅 it was so dangerous istg. Well i still love Toraja because the people there is so welcoming and ofc Toraja is my mother's home. Thank you for you amazing video Sam ❤

Wow. I didn’t know that. There is so much fascinating history with Toraja and the surrounding areas. It is sickening and sad to see how these beautiful animals are being used in fights for human entertainment, I get it that this has been part of a long lasting tradition but we , humans , have evolved in the past hundreds of years and just because certain things are deemed to be tradition does not mean we should make sure that they continue.. We used to eat with our hands before we invented forks and spoons and chopsticks and became civilized , we used to eat dogs and had glamorous dog eating festivals before we finally decided to become civilized and stop eating them. I am sure we can do in funerals without further harming the animals..

    • @IndoWild

I don’t disagree and most parts of Indonesia have changed from cruelty. The Cockfight is still quite popular across all of Indonesia. And in Toraja they have bull fighting among others. Toraja people have a very special almost celebrity status in Indonesia.
