As we walk through the city we explore Istanbul's humble beginnings as a Greek settlement, to it's glory days as Constantinople and being the capital city of Byzantium. And later on talking about its history within the Ottoman empire and the Turkish Republic under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

I live in İstanbul. I went shopping at "File" and while me and one of my relatives were going back home I started to count the animals I saw in the streets when we were close to my dads house.I was able to count 3 dogs and 9 cats. There are so many street cats/street dogs in Turkey

The christian symbols...everything is still there, you can look at them and take photos. And it's way more clean now that you have to take off your shoes while going inside. the Mosque got alive again and actually became useful for both, the Tourists AND Muslims.

Nevertheless I will and I want to go to Istanbul. I have family in Turkey thus I've visited a few places already. I've been to Aydın, Antalya, Burdur and Denizli, the city my relatives live in.
I've only been to aegean and mediterranean region of Turkey so far, but I'd like to see all the other regions as well.
highly recommend you come to izmir and see efes too. The city is huge and its founding was in 6000 bc thats like the neolithic age or as it is said in turkey the " Polished Stone Age"

I'm a Greek-Turk mix, and I work as a tour guide. I meet mainland Greeks all the time and also meet a lot of fellow Turks, either yatch crew or hotel personnels. They don't think the way you do. They travel, and try to get to know each other. Once they do, they begin to live 6 months in Greece and 6 months in Turkiye, like me. I love both my people and countries. We're literally the best when we're duo.

One side of my family is from Eski Zağra (Bulgaria), some part also related to Arnavutluk (Shqiperia) and the other side from Hatay province of Türkiye. Jokes aside, as someone living in Istanbul, this is legit pretty good summary of the city but mostly the European side. If you ever come back again, I suggest you to explore a bit more in the coastal Asian part, if you didn't already. And I suppose you didn't visit the Süleymaniye Mosque in Fatih either. Tourists mostly don't know that one but it's usually locals' favourite mosque and has a great scenery:)

I am sceptical about anyone wishing to be devshirme though :) They were usually taken away from their families if they were not orphans. Raised as Sunni Muslims even though their culture and religion were completely different. Then forced to become soldiers and a few of them took some roles in the government if they were lucky enough.

Living in Istanbul where there is healthcare and education, alongside wealth and prestige from being in the Sultan's guard force, isn't so bad when you think about it. And they also got to sleep with lots of women from their harems. Sure it's not humanitarian by today's standards of course but it's not nearly as evil as a lot of stuff from history.

I was in Istanbul recently because I live in Bulgaria, firstly the drive was awful worst 7 hours of my life. And yeah it was cool seeing it again because I didn’t really pay attention to the history of it. We also passed by that ice cream place where they were messing with people, funniest thing

Driving to İstanbul is not good idea. So much traffic. But theres a really good metro system. You can visit easily every touristic area. There are also sea buses and ferries. Very enjoyable.
