Stellar work. There's still a reasonably sized part of me that would love to see Sonic return to relevance. Man, I really need to get my hands on a Sega Master system. It's one of the few consoles I haven't played.
+Colonel Fancy (Mike Lind) cheers mate! Yeah I always cling to the hope that Sonic is going to make a massive come back. It can't be that hard to get a modern Sonic game right surely!? Ah dude, if you were in the UK I'd hook you up ASAP, Master System is a quality system
Fantastic retrospective. Man, I remember getting a Genesis for my 13th birthday and being completely stoked I got Sonic the Hedgehog. I love watching stuff like this. Keep up the excellent work. :D
+Damien Mychajlowskyj thanks very much man, glad you enjoyed the vid. I was a similar age when I got the first Sonic for Christmas. Such an impressive game back then
Yet another well researched and put together vid mate. Really interesting and I'm so pleased I was there at the time of the SNES and MD console wars. Playground banter at its finest 😄
I was a Sega kid, and if you'd asked me in the early 90's who would come out the victor in the Mario vs Sonic battle and I'd have gone with the latter every time. How wrong I turned out to be.
Great work here. The editing keeps you on your toes and you found clips I've never seen before. Takes me back and reminds me why I could never really get into Sonic. It seemed like Sonic intentionally appealed to kids who later went on be Mark Wahlberg clones by the end of the decade. :)
Man, It genuinely wish they'd make a comeback with a successful sonic game. I've been a fan since day one, and it makes me sad to see how much the public has turned on him...
+8-bit Andy Hug Dude, haha I always remember getting Sonics for Christmas too, my mom aalways saw me go ape over them, so she always saved them as the bomb-shell present at christmas! haha
Great video! It's funny that you mentioned Alex Kidd. You should consider making a video on his entire rise and fall. His history is fascinating. He's also been in numerous AWFUL games. A sad tale indeed.
I'm 19 and still love and play sonic! been playing it since I was 5. a lot of my friends question me on why I still play that game and that I should play games like gta. I tell them I don't play that stuff. sonic forever!
CD was easily the weakest one of the bunch 3&K>1>2>CD 3&K was the last truly great title and by far the best one in the series(especially if you play the Sonic 3 Complete hack which restores the Big Arm boss and lets you adjust some of the music among other options) After that Pocket Adventure and Advance 1 were pretty good but that's about it

I still see Sonic being played out in the wild now and again...surprisingly by 40+ women which I think comes down to either early mothers buying their Sons the console and having a soft spot for Sonic, or Teenaged Girls at the time thinking of Sonic as a cute animal that doubles up as an easy to access game for the female market. When i say out in the wild though, I really mean the women playing the games on the DS!
Good video, but you keep pronouncing "Yuji Naka" differently than the way I've heard it pronounced by everyone else. You're emphasizing the last "A" in "Naka", whereas every other time I've heard it it's not emphasized. I'm not saying you're wrong to pronounce it that way, in fact I don't even know how it's supposed to be pronounced properly. For all I know everyone else has been saying it wrong. But it just sounds strange to hear his name said that way.

Another great retrospective, hope to see many more of these in the future.
+TheGabrielSin thanks very much mate. I have one or two ideas for others too
You've a lot work into this bud, many thanks Andy really enjoyed the vid!! Keep it up :)
+BASS INVADER * it took longer than a game play that's for sure! Not too bad though. Thanks a lot dude!
Yet another well researched and put together vid mate. Really interesting and I'm so pleased I was there at the time of the SNES and MD console wars. Playground banter at its finest 😄
+RetroDave Nintendo Cheers Dave. Haha yeah man, Snes/MD era was the golden age to be a kid in for sure!
Fantastic video Andy! Very nicely put together! Keep up the excellent work mate
+GRUSS Newton thanks Russ. You're the biggest Sonic fan I know so I'm glad you liked it!
I was a Sega kid, and if you'd asked me in the early 90's who would come out the victor in the Mario vs Sonic battle and I'd have gone with the latter every time.
How wrong I turned out to be.
+Situations103 same man. Still, Sonic was awesome for a good while!

Awesome stuff Andy, more please!
+onaretrotip thanks Pete!
Great retrospective. You deserve more views!
Thanks man, cheers for checking out the vid
Man, It genuinely wish they'd make a comeback with a successful sonic game. I've been a fan since day one, and it makes me sad to see how much the public has turned on him...
+Jacob Rainer yeah it sucks right. I got Sonic for Christmas in 1991. For me those MD have never been topped in the series
+8-bit Andy Hug Dude, haha I always remember getting Sonics for Christmas too, my mom aalways saw me go ape over them, so she always saved them as the bomb-shell present at christmas! haha
Good work! Enjoyed watching ;)

I'm 19 and still love and play sonic! been playing it since I was 5. a lot of my friends question me on why I still play that game and that I should play games like gta. I tell them I don't play that stuff. sonic forever!
That's awesome. The early Sonic games are brilliant! Cheers for checking out the vid :)
my friends ( i refuse to call them friends) said sonic is for kid and call me retarded for liking it
i play sonic for the games till to this day
great vid again andy, enjoyed that
+TootyUk thanks Stu, cheers for checking it out man
Sonic CD was the last truly great Sonic title.
+Situations103 yeah I think you're right. Considering that came out in 1993 this is not a good sign!
CD was easily the weakest one of the bunch
3&K>1>2>CD
3&K was the last truly great title and by far the best one in the series(especially if you play the Sonic 3 Complete hack which restores the Big Arm boss and lets you adjust some of the music among other options)

***** spoken like someone who never laid his hands on it.
Micro Aggressor I've played Sonic CD countless times
It's a good game but nowhere near as good as Sonic 1,2 and especially not 3&K
Sonic CD felt experimental...it really showed that they were still not sure which direction they were going with a sequel to Sonic 1(since it was developed at the same time as Sonic 2)
It has the weakest level design in the classics(partly because of the absence of Hirokazu Yasuhara) and a very different feel altogether
It also has the worst zone in the classics by far(Wacky Workbench...what were they thinking with that bullshit?...and some of the stuff in Collision Chaos like a million of red springs placed in that section of act 1 felt like they came straight out a romhack...among other things)
If Sonic 2 was criticized for being "too horizontal" then Sonic CD is "too vertical"
The levels are all built towards exploring and finding the robot generators and that kind of stuff which is rewarding in itself but if you just play it normally(like Sonic 1,2 and 3) it feels very underwhelming and the levels don't feel that fun to play
In that way it feels very restricting compared to the other games which didn't really restrict you to playing in one way to enjoy the game
And about the visuals
The visuals for a Sega CD game are pretty underwhelming...3&K and Ristar and other games after that were much better visually and they were Mega Drive/Genesis games
The art style is great but the art direction is very dull with everything appearing too flat for my liking
I'll give it credit for having balls with the time travel mechanic though and for being tied with 3&K when it comes to having the best soundtrack in the series(I'm talking about the jap soundtrack here)
In short the game is good but could have been much much better
That's how I feel about Sonic CD
great video
+Ollie Martin cheers Ollie nice one man
awesome buddy! :D
+Retro Heven cheers mate!
Sonic. us. the. coolest😎
"Sonic 4"
That never happened...that game doesn't exist...
