I am a fan of vinegar and baking soda as cleaners. I am jus a bit concerned that you had gloves you used on your countertop next to towel you used to clean the mirror. And toilet paper to stick under rim is excellent idea but using a roll already in use while gloves are touching it and seemingly placed back is a little unnerving ☺. Maybe you can have separate rolls for tp section.

A note of caution about using anything acidic inside the tank. We used bleach tablets for the tank in our new home we had built and the tank started leaking into the bowl after a while (we lived there less than five years so it was maybe three years). Turns out, anything acidic like vinegar, bleach tablets, etc. pits or eats into the rubber ring that sits in between the bottom of the tank and the stopper and prevents a tight seal. We had to install a new seal. Anything acidic will eat or pit anything made of rubber. Otherwise, I like your cleaning tips!

You might also consider, as a preventative maintenance step (once or twice a year) pouring about a cup of vinegar into the the center pipe of the flush valve (where the little hose from the filler valve sits), to help clean/clear the water pathway to the underside of the rim. Limescale/rust buildup in this area can cause problems with the flushing of the toilet, and keeping the pathway clean will help reduce streaks.

WARNING! If you live in a rural area and have a septic tank, be sure to neutralize the water in the tank/bowl BEFORE flushing. The reason vinegar works is due to its acidity, and that acid will eat away the walls of your septic tank over time and can actually cause the septic tank to leak or even collapse. You can neutralize the acidity by adding baking soda until the added baking soda stops foaming -- then it is safe to flush.

I do this but refill the tank (reservoir) with hot water & lots of vinegar (it is cheap) - this saves on scrubbing the inside for too long. Also, you can clean your toilet brush by putting it in the tank OR pushing it down into the toilet with a hot solution in there instead of in the sink. Great to see you are so excited by being this clean!

  • @renniep9015

The vinegar is great, but I find if you mix it with Dawn soap it sticks to the sides of the bowl better. You can do a mix of 50/50 or more vinegar with less Dawn. The thicker the mixture the more it sticks to the sides. I have also just poured a gallon of cleaning vinegar in the top tank when I don't have time to spritz. Also if you use a plunger to get all of the water out of the bowl, you can then clean your toilet brush right in the toilet with the Dawn / vinegar mix instead of your sink (ugh!). When you add fresh water to your toilet you can then rinse that toilet brush out in the fresh water.

I found pouring vinegar down the overflow pipe gives a nice clean feel to a toilet. The water when flushing or if goes down the overflow pipe, goes around the rim, then down a chamber in the front to the eductor jet at the bottom (the hole shooting toward the drain). The vinegar gets at the rim jet holes from the inside and will loosen any mineral build up as well.

You can pour whatever you are using for a cleaning agent down the over flow tube if the tank is full and or down thru the flapper if the water is off and the tank is flushed.
Pour enough in so that the fluid comes out of the transfer ports under the rim to help clean the internal passages.

Also I keep an x-large to go cup and put the shower head in it Once a Month- fill with hottest water and a splash of Dist Vinegar, magical no scrubbing needed.

You're very welcome, keep up the good work! I might add, being a retired plumber, when debris is loose in the bottom of the tank, I use a shop vac to suck up material that is loose so it doesn't flush into the toilet bowl, which has small directional holes in the hollow rim that washes the sides of the bowl when flushed and they can get plugged with minerals and loose particles from the tank if not removed............The inside of your tank looks great :-)--

Great techniques for cleaning that toilet! Let me add that after turning off the water and flushing the toilet tank if you plunge the bowl you can get rid of a lot of the water in the bowl. It might help when cleaning the bowl as you can get to more of the bowl surface directly. Then again you might want that extra water handy for scrubbing around in the bowl. It’s a call probably based on the dirtiness of the bowl and rim.

Someone probably already mentioned this: you can, with out shutting the water off, pour a bucket of water, in the bowl to almost totally empty it. Then you can use a funnel and pour a gallon of vinegar down the fill tube. This will cause the vinegar to pour through the outlets under the rim of the toilet. If your handy you can make some sort of a recirculating pump to make a continuous flow while cleaning under the rim.
