i think that he was already dead and a ghost in purgatory. he left italia (the symbol of life as shown with her caring of children and culture) because he had finally realised that he wanted to move on to heaven (or whatever you wish to call it); the red string appeared many times throughout the movie and although he could have been hallucinating it, i think that it was a sign for him to move on and except passing on completely. the film opened with beniamina who was dead, further implying that the film took place in a state of death/purgatory. also arthur’s depiction throughout the film as the ‘hanged man’ (shots of him upside down, posters, etc) implies that he is in a different state of consciousness to others (the living), and is dead.
Loved this. I watched the movie a couple of days ago and ever since it has really stuck with me. I saw a lot of myself in Arthur’s character. I like what you said about his connection to the other side and it being the reason he can ‘sense’ the tombs. Great video. Makes me love the movie even more.
