Kereru , The beautiful big New Zealand native wood pigeon , seen here eating kowhai flowers and prunus leaves and blossom . Filmed with Canon SX70HS , Edited and produced with Cyberlink Powerdirector 15
I live with four mini chickens (serama) and an old Persian cat and I assure you, chickens are also very intelligent, have individual personalities, and are all very loving little souls. Yet they are the most abused species in this world. No human has to eat corpses!
You can hear the sound they make flying at 2:22 from ages away. A birds that evolved with pretty much no predators except maybe a giant eagle, which would see them before it hears them, had no reason to be quiet.
Every pigeon makes this kind of noise with their flight feathers, as they are gregarious birds, it's a way of warning their fellow pigeons when there is a predator around.
Don't forget the falcon. Kereru is a popular meal among falcons. I've also heard falcons causing mayhem, waking up Pureora forest on a moonlit night to feed on dozy birds awoken mid sleep. Perhaps it was all a big show put on as a courtship display.
Kereru is called kukupa in Northland. It's also known as kuku. These 3 names are sounds it makes, when intimately communicating. Like many native forest birds the maori name is an onomatopoeic rendition of its signature call. Think Kiwi, Huia, Tieke, Kokako, Kereru, Ruru, Riroriro, Toutouwai, Kaka, Kea, Kekereke (Kakariki). What better way is there to learn birds? You usually hear them before you see them. Of these the Ruru is the most clever because it is trilingual. When speaking maori it says Ruru ! When speaking pakeha it says Morepork. When in Australia it says Boobook. Have fun listening to the orchestra of the forest.
I love Kererus they are so cute 🥰. In my garden I have wood pigeon (ramiers) wich really look like little Kererus... they are bigger than the normal grey pigeons and so cute 🥰
These birds are absolute units and I love them
They are wonderful aren't they !

The Kereru call is not what I expected at all! Thanks for sharing these beautiful birds.
I think that call is a Tūī in the background
