    As always very informative. Well explained and concise. Very revealing of the trade secrets.

    This is great info for an aspiring home would be gunsmith. You have retained the originality of a pair of Purdeys into the bargain. I would imagine that as long as they are not subjected to 34 gramme thumpy cartridges on 200 bird days they will outlast their current owner, who I imagine will be delighted with the repairs. Well done and many thanks for the video.

      Thanks for your encouraging words..
      I’m strongly in favour of conservation of old guns whenever possible. 👍

    Most interesting part was the dowling. The worst part was sitting on the edge of my seat while you were drilling in case you broke through. Great video. Thank you.

      Thanks Alec. 👍on lesser guns, I have just drilled straight out. The walnut dowels polish up to “almost “ invisible.
      But not almost completely invisible as they do by not breaking out..

      An excellent video of two beautiful side locks that very few will ever have a chance to own let alone handle and shoot. In my years of shooting and collecting shotguns, I had to be content with 12 and 20 bore Belgium Brownings, and now a 16 gauge Webley and Scott. Excellent guns for my upland bird hunting but nowhere as the cherished Purdys you have there. It’s enjoyable to watch an accomplished craftsman / gunsmith as yourself. 👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳

    Dear Sir, I believe that the shotguns, as repaired, will provide years of sound service, with the added benefit that the original wood stock will adorn the gun. This adds to the sentimental value of these fine firearms. I had my father’s old side by side restored and insisted on keeping the original wood, which I remembered from a very young age. I enjoyed watching the video. Perry Pappous, Southern California, USA.

    Wow, another brilliant video and excellent skills sir, great workmanship and knowing that they are still good for shooting not to put in a cabinet is great 👍

    With regards to your dowels try running a fine tooth saw (Gentleman's saw) along it's length that will allow the glue a path to travel when taping in.

      Acetone but alcohol or everclear would work too 👍

    What is the stain? water based or oil?

    • @devongunsmith4698
      @devongunsmith4698  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Spirit based.
      Many years ago I tested water based stain and it was disgusting!
      Spirit based are the only compatible stains for gunstocks
