    It's odd how you can love someone you never met, and grieve their absence, even though you were never physically near them. This the power of the artist, especially those who speak directly to us, through music or theatre and movies. Robin Williams was one of those, and I will always miss his gentle and profoundly wise presence.

      I feel the same. It's been almost a decade since he's passed, and I still feel a hit to my heart when I'm reminded he's no longer with us.
      Robin Williams will not only be one of the greatest actors, but also one of the best people I've known.

      Yes! I think the game took an in-game character & added to it based on Alan's fears. After all, the game can transport you into its own pocket dimension, so pretty sure it can scan your mind.The description said "makes you feel like a child" & immediately Alan knew it meant the game character that reminds him of his dad, because he always felt small & unheard, never good enough for his dad.

    I love too that Alan's talking to his dad on the phone, at the Christmas party. Showing he was still very alive, but when they played Jumanji, the father and mother were both passed on by that point.
    It really shows what a broken heart does to your longevity. He had his son and was still doing just fine (hopefully the mom too)

  • @jonathansmith8672
    @jonathansmith8672 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +82

    So, to answer your question: Van Pelt is not Alan's dad, but he is supposed symbol his dad, for a reason. When he was a kid, Alan, not only had problems with his strict dad, but he always ran away from the problems he caused, like at the shoe factory when he put the shoe on the conveyor belt, and instead of taking accountability, he let Carl take the blame and let him get fired. So in a way, Alan was pretty much a coward. But when he gets trapped in the game for 26 years, he actually begins to regret all his past actions and what he said to his father. So when Van Pelt shows up, it gives Alan this big chance of redemption and standing up to his fears and problems. Alan runs away at first (Which symbolizes him running away from the problems with his dad) when Van Pelt shoots at him. But by the end of the movie, when Van Pelt holds Alan at gunpoint, Alan, instead of running away, finally has learned about responsiblity and has enough courage to stand up to his fears, finish the game, go back in time, and hope for the best between him and his father (Who also had a change of heart when he realized how much he mistreated and scared him).
    In fact, Van Pelt and Alan's dad are both played by the same actor, Jonathan Hyde, who also portrayed J. Bruce Ismay in "Titanic", the mustache dude who convinced the captain to make the ship go faster despite the icebergs.

    The first gun Van Pelt had when he came out of the game was a modified *Winchester Model 1901* for the movie.
    When he goes to the gun store he got a *Daewoo USAS-12* that has a scope, drum magazine, a suppressor, and I think a extended barrel to make it look like a sniper rifle.

    You need to add Zathura to your movie list. It's the same basic plot, the difference being that it's a space themed board game that becomes real for two brothers left in their house alone. It was written by the same author. After that, the board game from this movie morphs into a video game that sucks 4 teens into it's world in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and it's sequel The Next Level. Tons of video game tropes in both movies.

      Its the thing about good stories even if the effects of the time don't hold up today a good story will encourage you to overlook it while if its all about the effects there's no reason to rewatch. There's a number of old asian films I love where you can literally see the wires on modern TV but the story still brings me back.

If they weren't sequels by your definition they could be the other people. The name was there. The game was there but just in a different format. Both of the rifles in this film were created by the prop dept. the newer one does have a real rifle as its base but is heavy on modifications.
    the first one is probably based on something like a 4 bore or 8 bore- most of those are double barrels like the hunter in Jurrasic park 2, in the days of black powder you had some limitations, there was a point where just adding more powder didn't do anything to add velocity with black powder you cap out at about 1200 fps after that you are just wasting powder. SO they made the bullet bigger for hunting large dangerous game. a 4 bore is bigger than an 8 bore, 4 = 1 inch diameter bullet 8 bore .83 inch diameter so a very big chunk of lead

    I grew up with this movie. So nostalgia keeps bringing me back. It's the same with Deep Blue Sea (1999), which I think you'd enjoy. Nothing special about it, it's not Oscar material. It's just some chilling, you can watch it in any state without having to take it too seriously. And I feel Jumanji is a bit like that too.

    My headcanon is that Judy and Peter's memories of the alternate reality will hit them at the moment the present catches up to the day they found the game. They don't remember Sara and Allen in that Christmas scene because it's still about eight months before that day, hence why their parents haven't died in the car crash yet.
