    Hi Clara, thank you so much for your wonderful videos on silk painting. I recently made a silk blouse and I have remnants I want to paint. I can't wait to get started! But I have a question about your fabrics. What do you do about the edges? Do you hem them yourself or do you buy already-hemmed pieces? I tried to machine-hem my silk pieces and it didn't come out so well! I'm curious as to how you finish the squares before you begin painting them. Thanks for your great advice!

    • @claramitchell746
      @claramitchell746 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for your questions RebeccaBaileySandlin.
      I work on 100% silk Habotai, 10mm.
      I purchase yardage, cut, hem and paint the silk myself.
      You can purchase finished lengths of silk scarves and shirts, as well.
      I purchase all of my silk painting tools from Dharma Trading Company, which is based in California.
      This company caters to artists and crafters, and are very helpful indeed, because they too are artists.
      They also ship internationally.
      As far as getting a ‘square’ scalf, I pin the silk to a corrugated cutting board, making sure that the fibers are perpendicular to each other, forming a cross; that is, the straight grain of the fabric, should be parallel to the selvage, and the fibers in the weft, must be perpendicular to the selvage and straight grain.
      Failing all if this, I suggest you purchase the size silk you need.
      I do hope this helps.

      @@claramitchell746 Thanks for your response, Clara! Do you hand-hem your silks or use a machine? Do you have a special technique for getting that silk to behave? How big is your hem? I am just full of hemming questions!

    Thank you Clara, 🥰😇 I appreciate your detailed instructions with the silk mediums. I am a professional artist, work in all mediums. Had done a couple of silk projects years ago. Your explanation of how those mediums, water based gutta & the paints work is a great help.With the waterbased resists you let them dry completely before you paint ? Also, you said the water based Gutta will dissolve on the silk when you are painting so move fast and don't get the gutta too wet or it will dissolve ? Thank you so much you are a great teacher 🥰🙏😘

    • @claramitchell746
      @claramitchell746 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good Afternoon Kavitha Murugesan,
      Thank you for your kind words.
      You may purchase the adjustable metal silk-painting frame from Dharma Trading, or
      … you may use painter’s stretchers, like I do, which come at varying lengths, or
      … you can make them yourself.
      If you know the size of your piece, make certain that the silk fits in the ‘well’ of your frame; that is, the inside of the frame.
      For example, if your silk measures 12” x 48”, your frame should measure, at least 14” x 50”, or 15” x 51”
      I try not to have the silk touch the frame once it has been pinned.
      Hope this helps.🖌✨

    Hi, thank you for these instructions. If I were to silk paint a saree which is 6 yards long and 45” wide, what kind of frame should I use? And how would you recommend doing a flat wash on a larger area like that?

    • @claraapplewhaitedesigns7463
      @claraapplewhaitedesigns7463  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your question @Gayanichathu.
      You will have to wash the starch out of the sari, and then iron while damp.
      Since it is a sari length, it may be best to dye the sari first, with a very light colour, before you begin to apply the 'gutta' and then paint.
      NB. You should add water to the colour, and make a big batch to dye the entire sari length.
      Depending on your design, you may have to paint the sari in sections, on a screen measuring 38" x 48" Hope this helps!!! All the best!!!

    • @Gayanichathu
      @Gayanichathu 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thank you so much! Could you also please tell me, apart from being easier to use and set, what is the biggest difference from dye-na-flow and regular silk paint. Does dye-na-flow give the same color intensity as well as the same after-feel of the silk fabric?

      Good Morning Kavita Kalda, thank you for your interest and for your question. ( For your information, I am based in New Jersey, USA) I use ‘stretchers’ which are the frames that artists use for their canvasses. I will describe this in my upcoming video, Trying ‘Gutta Serti’ For The First Time. I am also thinking seriously of starting classes online, since this pandemic. I will let you know. Hope this helps.

    Hi Clara,beautiful work! Do you ever use no flow? I’m a beginner interested in learning more about how to use no flow! Thank you!

    • @claraapplewhaitedesigns7463
      @claraapplewhaitedesigns7463  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good Morning Mymsgerdy, I have never used 'no-flow' products, as I enjoy the movement of colour, and surprises they create. As explained on the directions for these 'primers', they work with certain silk paints and dyes, NOT ALL, and there is a permanent change in the 'hand' or feel of the silk, which is not a desired effect for me. Based on this information, I am not certain that I will be using 'no-flow' for my wearable art. It could be used on a wall-hanging, if I deemed it necessary. NB. This is why, one must plan the design beforehand; the colours to be used; the techniques to be used, and the end-product. I find that the process is quite revealing, and shows one the best way to go. Enjoy experimenting! Hope this helps. You may also enjoy some of my pieces on my Instagram account, @claradesignsart

    • @claraapplewhaitedesigns7463
      @claraapplewhaitedesigns7463  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Ronnie,
      The silk fabric that I purchase, is ready for painting, so there is no preparation required.
      However, if you purchase the silk from a fabric store, you will have to wash off the 'sizing', or starch, and iron it, before you begin your work.
      You may use the industrial detergent called Kieralon or Synthrapol, which can also be purchased from Dharma Trading, win California. They also ship internationally. Hope this helps!
