as someone who is also disabled and deals with the VA on a regular basis over the last 20 years there's a lot missing here. I'm guessing we're getting some unreliable narration or apathy on Angela's part. Sooooo many congress persons would love to rip the military a new one over a story like this, if it was true. Which it probably isn't. I heard stories just like this in the military and 100% of the time it wasn't actually true.

as a person who is disabled myself, I think you did a fantastic job covering this situation. To be clear - there is no one way to cover disability. In some cases, if the individual with it viewed it as a tragedy, it can be appropriate to portray it as a tragic thing, in other cases people with disabilities are very proud of their disability and portraying it as anything but a thing of pride would be very insulting to them. So the best thing to actually do, in my opinion, is to talk about disability in general neutrally (it isn't bad or good, it just is) and then when discussing a specific person's experience to match how you discuss it's impact on their life to how they actually saw it (a.k.a if they were a very proud deaf person don't talk about what a tragic and hard thing it was to overcome, if they view becoming deaf as worst thing that ever happened to them don't talk about it like it was a point of pride for them because that's not how they saw it). I think you did a good job matching how you discussed it with how Angela seemed to think about it (she did seem to see it as a loss, but also didn't see it as a tragedy).

Thank you so much for sharing Angela’s story with us!
What an amazing, inspirational and truly beautiful person! Ironic how the volleyball scholarship rejection was fueled by ignorant assumption that women are incapable of juggling motherhood, athletics and education. Yet, out of all things, she went on to join the freaking Marines! (Which feels like a much more difficult obstacle, IMO; especially given the way that women are treated in this branch, particularly back then.) Repeatedly, Angela got screwed over by people and life; but rather than giving up, she used her pain and challenges as motivation to excel. She would have still been fascinating without being lesbian and a Paralympian but it’s so awesome that her identity enabled her to reach and influence an even broader demographic! Angela was an exceptional person whose memory deserves to be honored and celebrated! 💕
P.S. I hope Deb is doing well! Sending much love and appreciation her way 🫶

I’m very lucky I didn’t end up like this lady after I broke my neck and jaw in the Army. I did lose everything including my marriage, because most people don’t actually mean their vows. But thankfully, I wasn’t permanently paralyzed. I’ve also not done anything dangerous since my injuries. The pain in my neck and face are just too much for me, and I lose power to the rest of my body if I am upright for too long due to C2 impinging on my spinal cord. Angela sure was a trooper, though. I wish she’d have just rowed in lakes and other less threatening places. If you can’t properly swim, it’s probably not the best idea to hit the ocean if you want to live a long life. The ocean is powerful and carnivorous. Even the perfectly healthy have succumbed to the depths of the ocean.

If anyone deserved to achieve their dreams it's Angela. God bless her beloved family and partner and may she rest in peace. I'd likely have given up long ago in her situation! tho I am 5'11" I sucked at basketball (actually embarrassed myself making a basket in the wrong basket at a sixth grade basketball game). @@adventuresgonewrong sometimes it is better to be aware of real danger. Like those seakayaker who have a lifeline to stay connected with their kajak on a solotrip. In windy conditions the boat will sail away faster than you can swim.

I didn't see much on her, other than she left home in her late teens. And she passed away in 2019.

Started with binging your videos one day a few months ago, and then watching them immediately when you post… Today I checked and noticed I hadn’t subscribed yet! What!? Done! Yes, you do sometimes focus on elite athletes who take risks and elevate their lives as with this video about Angela. I also like the ones about obscure people who go for months on national trails and challenging known routes. It’s like anyone and everyone who takes on a challenge like that can have an epic story. And in a way everyone’s story is kind of epic.

It's Women like u both that make the changes that need to happen for all Men and Women to be treated Equally. 🇦🇺🏳️‍🌈🌈💖

Um, if he was not taking “no” for an answer and she had to resort to force, that is not her “assaulting” him. He was the assailant- she defended herself successfully.
