The swimming mistake. A sign when a mistake makes history. Somehow them not doing research is a good thing for the games, but kinda embarrassing for segas end. But still a good mistake and I’m happy they spindashed with it!
I'm glad someone mentioned Satoshi Okano in the comments because he stylized the work while Yuji Uekawa finalised the rendering, that's an important key, you gotta have both of them in the equation.
@@DuckyOnNintendo64 Some time ago Okano posted on Twitter his old sketch book with the pencil sketches of artworks for Sonic 3D Blast (japanese Saturn version); Sonic Adventure and Monkey Ball. Many SA1 artworks are simply repurposed 3D Blast art with minor tweaks. Compare 3D Blast's japanese art SA1 art and you'll see they are similar.
The Santa Claus doesn't stop in the shoes color, it's the base of Sonic. This is because Naoto Oshima really likes Christmas and the character of Santa Claus. He even say in interviews that ehen he joined Sega, he said that "I joined this company because I want to be Santa Claus". That explain Sonic's personality of traveling the world and giving joy (in-universe and out), his home island being called Christmas Island, and why Nights have a Christmas theme game.
The redesigns were so epic one man couldn't have done it alone. Also Okano's 3D Blast art is very much like the missing link between the Mega Drive original design, and the Dreamcast updated look.
2:30 Wait a minute.. Castle Crashers had the final boss island floating by a magic crystal too. Not to mention once you encounter the four final bosses on the island, the song that plays is called “Castle in the Sky.” Huh.
00:34 Well classic Sonic was really influenced by Dragon Ball. Not only Super Sonic. In official manga that was added to the game, Sonic has harem of human bunny girls ;) which is obvious nod to Akira Toriyama bunny girl fetish (check Sonic Bodyguard Platoon). Same with fact that in first Dragon Ball, Goku was the only strong character as a result his enemies relied, on mechs, tanks and machines to defeat him.
The bunny girl and machines could just be speculation. Speaking of the bunny girl, toriyama only used it for one arc and never again. Also are you talking about the Nicky sonic manga? If so, that was more so fan girls of sonic (Nicky's alter ego)
theres a lie on the music part, Sonic 1 music was made by a band called "dreams come true" and they converted they re 1st album in to the megadrive chip...
We never talk about Sonic 1's music. So I don't know how we could be lying about it. BTW though... Sonic 1's music was only created by a member of Dreams Come True Masato Nakamura. It was not a conversion of their first album, assuming that's what you meant.
What inspirations of Sonic do you like best?

Wow project “Defeat Mario” it's funny to see how that relationship evolved with Mario & Sonic at The Olympic Games

01:09 wow I didn't know Tails was based on Kitsune from Urusei Yatsura, now I know why he is so adorable :D
Actually, it was Satoshi Okano the designer behind Modern Sonic. Yuji Uekawa would later remake many of Okano's artworks in his own style.
Source?

Uekawa basically took the ideas from Satoshi Okano but refined it esp the shading added

I'll probably do another video on this subject that deep dives on it. Since that's just one part of this video.
I did *NOT* expect Garrulous64 to be here but okay.
well Dr Eggman was also highly inspired by Prof. Lonebach one of villains from Lupin III series.
Great video
