As someone who has worked with vocalists professionally as a musical director (band conductor), I can tell you that what Ava Max suffers from is vocal instability. Her tone is all over the place, one line its nasal, the next its throaty and then there is the lack of power, this would all be fine if she blended the sounds more which comes with simple practice with a vocal instructor. When you don't blend your voice, it affects pitching, hence the incredibly loud vocal track, which is in fact is louder than her throughout the performance. These factors lead to flat moments in choruses despite production efforts to hide this (the canned melody track) but also, they lead to performers "not feeling" the song and ultimately giving largely dull performances. Using canned tracks can be amazing and very helpful for big productions, the problem is that if it done badly (levels are wrong) it can come across as the artists not having confidence in their song. Let me be clear, she has the makings of an great (not just good) voice but you have to apply craft, this is what separates the massively successful artists from the rest.
