Unlike Simon, I’m willing to learn but I admit it doesn’t thrill me, so I’m tempted to say it would bore me. However, whichever way Simon reacts (either a rising wrath for having been forced to read about sports, or you managing to surpass his apathy and make it palatable to him) is sure to entertain us.

My husband's tech team had to go in for an "all hands on deck" emergency to fix the system. Worst of all, since it affected EVERYTHING, they were finding systems that got missed for weeks. One guy wanted to make a video call to China in an office they rarely use, and the display monitor was still down. When 4 techs have to fix 2000 machines in 3 countries because the company can't be bothered to hire enough people, a mass failure like this gets messy. At least the CEO acknowledged their quick response in his worldcast and gave them each a $1500 bonus. I guess he thinks that also makes up for not giving them a raise to match inflation 5 years in a row.

From what I heard NASA sent consultants to both Boeing and Space X, at Space X they were heavily involved with the development and construction and treated like Experts. At Boeing some of them reported being basically ignored, treated like interns, and generally sidelined by corporate suits who thought they knew better than even Boeing's own engineers, let alone these interlopers. (At least 1 Boeing whistleblower made it publicly known before his coroner ruled self-end that he was explicitly not going to do that and was very much looking forward to his day in court as a witness).

Would not be surprised at Boeing's treatment of NASA personnel. 2009ish Boeing did a test flight out of Seattle of some new massive plane and had to ground it in Moses Lake, WA for months while they tried to figure what went wrong. Absolute jerks to deal with. Never been so glad to just be a general employee in a machine/welding shop instead of customer facing. I just had to make sure there weren't any sharp edges they might accidentally cut themselves with on their new parts.
Super easy to spot at local restaurants and stores.

I would be very concerned if my story did not make sense to people who understand how baseball works. It's not like I was talking about the infield fly rule or anything (which is also really simple, though games must have been fairly hilarious before it existed)

For non baseball people, that game at the beginning is legendary for being pure heartbreak. It is incredibly infamous. You can say “Buckner” to even a casual fan and chances are good they’ll respond with a compassionate, “Ahhh…”
So hearing Simon be baffled by the summary of that game is really REALLY funny.
(Compelled to add that Buckner was an awesome player who didn’t deserve to be remembered for only that flub which the game never should have come down to anyway- fan-tangent over.)

Simon, 'roll it out to your receptionist' is called Beta testing. Alpha testing is passing the code to your professional testers (if you're a bigger company) or other programmers (if you're a smaller company). If you're a company that makes stuff people want to try to break, you can ask for applications for beta testers - this usually works well for games.
So yes, 'roll it out to your receptionist' is such a good idea that smart companies already do!

    • @ThatWriterKevin

Writers missed the most important parts of why Concord failed, they made a bunch of statements and releases about their choices in why the game was developed/ made the way it was and when the potential player base tried addressing the issues they saw, the devs of concord replied that "the game wasn't for you then" which pissed off a lot of potential players that would have played it to try it and so the players listened and since it wasnt for them they didn't buy it. Then the devs and small community that DID support concord got all pissy and lambasted the player base at large and blamed us all for why concord failed, all why not once taking responsibility for their own massive part in all of it.

My coworkers and I spent the entire Crowdstrike debacle wondering if Crowdstrike would be discounted enough for us to buy it. And wonder of wonders, we actually *were* allowed to demo Falcon a few weeks ago. We decided to go with a competitor, but it was fun.
Simon, the reason for simultaneous updates is Crowdstrike is designed to recognize *malware*. Malware gets updated so fast that it's essentially a cat and mouse game between virus hashes being identified, Crowdstrike (and equivalents) being updated to catch them, and then the malware being updated to change the hash. Staggered rollout increases the odds of an update being useless.
