The other keyboard player was Jonathan Melvoin - Susannah and Wendy’s brother.
He was with the USA group The Smashing Pumpkins.
Drummed as well - I think on one of the tracks on the Parade album.
Died from a Heroin overdose - Wendy and Susannah would not allow members of The Smashing Pumpkins to attend the funeral.
A member of that band fuelled Jonathan’s addiction.
Another member of the Purple Family that will never be forgotten.

This is an AMAZING LP!!! One of the best PRINCE related bands for sure. This LP stands up against any of the other Paisley Park Artists & IMO…eclipses them all.✊🏾

U had me until the last line! IMO I don't think it eclipses any our of Prince's work, The Time was clearly better than the Family, at least IMO, but different strokes 4 different folks right. I do Love The Family, don't get me wrong. I have their LP, and maybe even a 12" dance single of High Fashion, I believe, been awhile since I've dragged out my collection. Might have 2 do that soon. There's just nothing like listening to a vynal record. 4 U youngins, Google it. It's one of the many ways we listened to music without computers. As U can tell I'm Ole School, but still can get down with some good funk!!!

  • @nancypatricia511

Excellent, rare footage!! So sad that this is as far as The Family got for so many years!! But it may never have been at all. There is a lot of info on the net and specifically here on TH-cam about their story, how they came to be, Prince's conception, etc. There aren't many bands that would come back from the kind of start that they had; one uncertified album with one charting song, and one show at a local club. But the bonds of the Prince family are strong!
BTW, this channel is one of the best Prince channels for people who want to see and hear that which is beyond the common sightings and sounds of all things Prince!!

A live shoot I directed at First Avenue through A.V.E. Productions (Audio, Visual Entertainment)-the in-house camera and crew staff at the iconic Danceteria/Nightclub in Minneapolis-was one of many projects I oversaw as head VJ. I directed numerous live in-house shows during my time there.
Prince often requested that these events be recorded live, including a few of his performances, such as the 1984 Minnesota Dance Theater benefit show. This was the historic moment where he introduced the Purple Rain music to the world. The audio for that concert was professionally recorded by Record Plant Studios, likely from California or New York.
Audio snakes ran throughout the club, with PZM microphones strategically placed on the windows of the DJ booth. All the cables connected to an 18-wheeler remote studio truck parked on 1st Avenue. That recording became the Purple Rain album and the music featured in the movie.

This is actually a hell of a show. I remember seeing the video for “Screams of Passion” on Video Soul back in the day, and my dad had the album. Watching this I’m thinking Susannah might’ve been the best female dancer the Prince organization ever had. She’s a perfect compliment to Jerome! I don’t think the footage does her voice enough justice, though. Her mic was not turned up enough. Her voice is one I’ve definitely heard elsewhere in The Organization during this period (PARADE, Andre Cymone’s AC possibly, and so forth).

That was such a treat. I absolutely love The family’s debut LP. In fact, Saint Paul’s version of ‘nothing compares 2U’,, is my absolute favorite version. In fact,, (i’m sure to some this will be purple💜 blasphemy,🤣🤣🤣🤣) I prefer The family/Saint Paul’s version of ‘nothing compares 2U’,, over Sinéad O’Connor as well as Prince’s & Rosie Gaines rendition of the song. It was great to see Jerome Benton. ‘Under the cherry Moon’ is one of my guilty pleasures. But of course, the parade was amazing. Unfortunately, the critics did not feel the same way about movie. To me ‘under the cherry moon’ was like the black version of a Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello movie. I grew up on those movies. But I believe that Jerome Benton,, would’ve been an outstanding actor. If he would have pursued an acting career. It’s unbelievable that ‘under the cherry moon’,, was Jerome Benton‘s second movie. I wish he would’ve continued his acting career. But I’m also disappointed that the family could not continue as well. I truly enjoyed Saint Paul’s solo debut album. And I think I’m still in love with Susanna.🤪💜

St.Paul is boring & stiff as a board, but Susannah has plenty of personality, and I'd hardly call her stiff as a board. The pajamas was a bad idea and to be honest, Susannah was super pitchy and then flat and the male vocalist just didn’t have the kind of chops that Prince had… when Prince puts a group together, you expect better. The band was tight AF.. But the two leads just weren’t strong enough to pull it off…. The lead guy sounds like a corny white boy when he talks.. there was no swag.. it’s like watching mediocre prince cover band. Jerome was the only one with swag and style. Only thing good about out this band was the musicians behind it.
