  • We ran into a few issues trying to get it going. It was almost too good to be true.

    I bought from TSC a customer return that he had used for a bit..But it would not run when I looked at it..TSC had left it out in the rain and that infamous air cleaner had let water into the carb and even the tank had water..Cleared that out and the engine started..This was all at home as I bought it for 60 % off retail price..
    Before I started it I checked the oil and oil spilled out..thought everything was just fine, just over full..After starting it, it just didn't run right..spitting and sputtering..
    Check oil again and it was yellow milky white..The crankcase had filled with water and could have ruined the engine for the little time I ran it..
    Drained it all out and new oil put in and it runs like a champ!!

      It’s unfortunate that something as simple as the air cleaner could cause so many problems. I leave mine outside, but I put a pan over the air cleaner and weight it down with a brick. Problem solved. Sounds like you got a good deal.

      @@HilltownCT It is the Oregon brand..Rated at 30T..retail price was 1800.00..they had the price tag reduced to 900..After trying to start it there on the lot and it would not start, I offered 800 and they didn't even hesitate to accept..
      What is funny, the day before I saw that YT video about the guy that complained to Kohler engine how bad the design was for the air cleaner..
      So I knew the carb had water in it..
      But I didn't realize how it all drained into the engine case..It really had a lot of water in it..
      Now I have a life time piece of equipment that just need a cover on the carb!!

    I’ve got the same splitter that I bought used. Got it home and split a couple face cords then the hydraulic valve started messing up. On the top of the ram is an 800 telephone number which I called and even though I bought it used they sent me a new valve, no charge. Great splitter, I too bought the log catcher table, great addition!

      Yeah, I bought the log catcher and the four way wedge. The wedge IMO is more trouble than it’s worth, but the catcher is awesome.

      My wife was going to buy me the 4-way wedge for Christmas but said don’t bother. I tried one at my neighbors house and it seemed to create more waste then the standard and I felt I had a lot more control with the standard.

    I was getting ready to bring my 25 ton back...when i viewed your video.
    I called in tech, they had no clue, said take to authorized Kohler to get serviced. After 8 hours I'm taking to get serviced?
    Took off pully and pulled spark plug. Socket and bar turned counter cloak wise 2-4 rotations, freed up. Put spark plug on. Slow pulled a few times, third time regular pull and engine started right up. Fixed 5 minutes. I can see why people think engine seized up. I don't know the definition engine problem maybe a hydraulic lock.
    Other thing is engine oil (Factory filled) was way over. Drained about 2 cups of oil. Should be 1/2 between H and L. Wonder if the high engine oil level locked up the engine?

      Interesting. Another guy on YT has a video on this subject and he seems to think water is seeping down through the air cleaner wingnut and working its way into the engine. I keep mine covered now and it hasn’t been an issue. Good luck.

    Mine did the same thing. Water and moisture make their way in because of the crappy air filter cover design and partially seize the engine if it is stored outside for long periods of time. Keep it covered and it will run like a noisy ass champ.

    Thanks for making this video. I almost took mine back. I might be looking to upgraded to a honda motor in the future.

    Water will get in the carburetor if not covered. Also shut off gas when transporting over the road,gas will get in the oil engine will seize up,mine did.

    I've had my CL 25 ton for 4 years now and its paid for itself 4 times over as I only heat with wood. This is all the splitter that most anyone will need. I paid $ 900 then and I see now they're going for north of $1500. One other thing, I would not tow this for more that a VERY SLOW mile on paved roads as the ''axles'', such as they are, are welded to the hyd. tank and that in itself is a terrible design. Another other thing, I do most of my splitting in the vertical position but at times I need to split up some starter kindling for the smoker and I do that horizontally so I'm going make up a log catch.

      Glad to hear it has been reliable for you: i put a log catcher on mine and wished I had done it earlier.

    So my County Line 20 ton seized just like yours and I preformed same hand cranking w/socket wrench. What do you believe was the cause of the temporary freeze. Mine had been sitting outside (under cover) for several weeks since last used. Definitely gave me a scare!

    • @HilltownCT
      @HilltownCT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GibsonPewter I believe it’s caused by water getting into the air box. If yours was covered, you might have a different issue.

      @@HilltownCT I got it running eventually. I did not pull the spark plug, just gently rotated shaft and was then able to start tugging. Splitter was under cover and galvanized bucket over engine. Still seized, but as I said, running now.

    Think mine just got low on oil & stopped running but I figured it out pretty quick but filter's leaking I noticed.

    Too much oil in your lawn mower may cause the engine to not run well and cause damaging results. Too much oil can cause your engine to overheat which can result in seal damage, blown gaskets or becoming hydrolocked.

  • @JD-os2kr

    I'm literally having the same problem.
    Just bought mine and noticed the oil level is too high and the hydraulic level is too low. It won't start.
    What a pain in the ass.

    • @HilltownCT
      @HilltownCT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I learned after posting the video that the air cleaner design seems to allow water to leak down into the carb and cause the issue. Good luck. It is a PITA!

    • @roberta5948
      @roberta5948 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was having the same problem. I replaced the wing nut on the top of the air filter housing with an M6 female threaded turn knob (no hole all the way through the knob) and a rubber washer under it. That solves the issue of water seeping down the throat of the carb and filling up the cylinder. Your best bet tho is to store your splitter under a cover or at least cover the engine with something waterproof if it’s gonna get rained on.

      I’ve had same splitter for 6 months & have split 15 face cords with no issues. But I keep mine covered with a splitter cover that fits like a glove keeping rain & snow out. Only issue I had initially was I killed the engine before the ram had fully returned. The next day I could not pull the starter cord. Found out the hard way to never shut the engine down until the ram had reset itself. Live & learn. Hope this helps someone.
