Don't spew hate. She took the time to show us something intimate and important to her & that's not easy to do. Please be respectful.
I don't see any negative or "ignorant" comments here. Just because someone wonders why a woman would need to spend that much time to just basically put her hair in a bun and cover it doesn't make that person ignorant. Who's spew hate? What in the world is your definition of hate?
Okay at 1st I was going to agree with you until I read the last person response and then went and read almost every comment. NOT ONE PERSON LEFT A BAD COMMENT NOT ONE PERSON. Which makes me wonder exactly what comment or comments were you reading that were mean, off or displeasing to you? I really want to read them and I am going to to finish reading all the comments but after 50+ comments w/not a single bad comment I stopped. BLESSINGS & Prayers to you
What negative and ignorant comments? Like a couple other people who asked about these comments, I read the comments trying to find the ones you might have been referring to, and couldn't find any. Are you talking about some other video maybe?
Thank you for showing us this video. My sister is a nurses aid in a wonderful nursing in home and a elderly lady was to sick to put her hair up like you do. My sister did her hair and put her black cap on for her. She told my sister not to worry and my sister said she wanted to do it for respect of her religion. It made the lady happy. I also work there and seen how happy it made her. God bless you for showing this.
The story about your sister helping the woman made me smile. (Tell or show her my response please!) ... Thank her for being 'one in a million' in going out of her way to help someone continue to show their respect when they themselves no longer can. She is an inspiration to people .... if only more people reached out in 'respect or friendship' for others instead of in 'hate, fear or anger', the world would be so much better for it....

Some people really like to have that connection like your sister did with the older lady. What she did for her made that woman's day special. God sent your sister to the lady over her personal prayer that someone come and take their time to do that. Your sister got a huge reward for that. Im from the very southern part of Arkansas. The Mennonites use to come to our Baptist church for Wed. Night service. I loved them. So calm, gracious, and faithful. Thank you for showing this. God bless you.
Thank you! I've always wondered how Mennonite and Amish ladies kept their hair looking so smooth and neat all through a long work day. Then they take it down at night for their husbands. There is something sweet and intimate about that. You have a lovely soothing voice and beautiful hair.
I'll have to look and see how old this video is, but many of the Holdeman Mennonite women have their coverings pre sewn (when they make them themselves) now so that they don't have to do the whole folding thing every day. You can actually kinda learn to tell who's are sewn and who's are folded when you see them a lot.

I'm a ex-Mennonite. I never seen it done this way! We always combed the front first, Than twisted rest into a bun, put a hairnet over and bobbypins to fasten. Than put a covering on.
My wonderful Mother in law was a member of the Pentacostal Holiness Church. She as do all the Holiness women wore her hair up in a bun except she went to the beauty shop to have it done once a week! There are Mennonite Church members who come into Boston and sing in downtown crossing , being a hairdresser , I find myself always looking at everyones hair wherever I go. Thank you for the tutorial . I enjoy learning about how people of different faiths wear there hair and for what occasions .
It is refreshing to watch a hair tutorial that is a simple, everyday style, from a young person! You showed me something, with the hair net, that I didn’t know before, so thank you.
Liked the music in the background too. When I was in school we slept in brush rollers. In elementary school Mom made curls with Bobbie pins. I am 64. I can see how it keeps the hair out of the way when working.
Patty Blevins : My mom used to make curls using bobby pins too, she called them pin curls. And those brush rollers, oh my gosh they were so uncomfortable to sleep in. lol
I find learning new things especially hair styles very interesting. You have lovely hair. Neat and tidy is chic. I never knew what to do with those hair nets. Thank you for sharing
I just have to tell you what beautiful hair you have. I was a hairstylist for almost 40 yrs & you have some of the best hair I've ever seen. I'm watching you put all those clips thinking, "all I need is a couple of bobby pins! Oh, how I wish I had beautiful thick hair like this young lady!" It truly is your "crowning glory". Thank you for sharing!
Precious. They have such a sweet spirit. It’s great You Tube lets everyone see uniqueness. Maybe it will lessen hate and distrust. We are all a combination of upbringing, culture, and decisions and habits we make for ourselves. I respect women who cover or chose to be simple. I have a salon, and it’s the complete opposite. When I retire, I want to grow my hair out, stick it in a bun, and be natural, and free of all this INSANITY. Peace 2U
I'm retired, I have given up bras , fixing my hair perfectly every day , just wash and comb, and am trying to be natural . I'm loving the freedom it brings
Thank you for sharing. Don't worry about the negative comments. I also loved the plant stand in the background and the beautiful music. If you can please share more traditions. I live in Kansas and there are many folks that live the Mennonite way of life. I have a cousin in Pennsylvania who has chosen to follow that path.
Thank you! I also have long hair. This is a good way to get it out of the way on a busy day working in the garden. And learning little details about other cultures like this is actually a good insight.
Very nice video! It looks so simple when it's all done, but there are a lot of steps. I especially liked the bobby-pin on top for Sundays. I always had a hard time keeping my scarf on back in the day when I used to wear one, which was a fashion, not a religious requirement. We have a Mennonite neighbor who is the very nicest person! I had a friend in school who also was Mennonite, and she was a lovely, calm person. It's nice to see someone who isn't a make-up maniac in skimpy clothes.
Fair Play if that’s the objective, Monica Rose has failed, because she and this video, are beautiful. What’s NOT pretty is oppression of women. It’s not, to me, that this hairstyle isn’t functional and lovely; it’s that some religious sects do not allow women to make their own choice as to how they present themselves that is not-so lovely. 💖
I was raised Holderman Mennonite as well! Watching this brought back a ton of memories! Not all good, not all bad. I have been free and worldy for 13 years now! I never belonged there.
This was really fascinating because the Mennonite community is mysterious to most of us. I don’t know what it has been like for you to choose what is best for you personally, and leave the Mennonite religious community and way of life behind, but I support your choices. You have a very unique insight into the world because of your path. Thank you for sharing. ☀️
I always wondered how the ladies did their hair under the prayer covering. My hometown has a large Holdeman community & I had a few friends who were formerly in the church. My husband was raised General Conference Mennonite which what many are in his hometown. Thank you for a lovely informative video.
Nothing wrong with living a simple life. Loving God and caring for your neighbors..Helping your community out. You do not have to be a Mennonite to live this way. Your video was awesome....
Thanks for sharing, I always wondered how the little bit of fabric goes on. I live on a farm in rural Wisconsin and have many Mennonite and ex-Mennonite neighbors.
I've been out of the church for more than 20 years, now, but this brings back some lovely memories. Thank you for doing this video. By the way, many people don't realize that all those bobby pins set off the metal detectors at airports. Taking your hair down, going through the detectors, and putting your hair back up is no small feat. They don't always make you do it, but sometimes you get a stubborn TSA agent. Oh, well. That's life.
Please do more on both simple customs, your own journey, things people may not know about how Mennonite women live vs. how you live now. Wonderful video.
The two top pins I remember as being strait not crinkle pins. They are strong and ordered from an amish/mennonite store, better than what you get at walmart or walgreens. Monica Rose is correct it takes a while to learn, one wants it smooth and not lumpy. If you make it too tight though you will pull hair out or give yourself a headache. Some will "thin" their hair or cut it so it's not so heavy. Thank you for posting this! Brings back memories.
When I lived in Wisconsin..most of my neighbors were Mennonites..very friendly, helpful, Christian folks! My son helped out with work sometimes when he was younger. I loved having them for neighbors! My hair is long as well...this is a great way to keep your hair up all day without it falling down during the day at work. With it covered it stays clean too.. without having to wash it so much! Thanks for sharing! 😃
Whitney Lee I also used to cover and still have very long hair despite it never being a religious thing-it was just a lot more convenient. I also worked in an area with a sizable orthodox Jewish community so no one batted an eye at a woman with covered hair...as long as the covering didn’t slip too far back or if I did something like blatantly eat pork or meat pizza... Edit, I’ll also be working on a farm and managing a woodlot in the near future so I’m gathering new ideas for secure head coverings. I tore out too much hair wandering the woods as a kid. Shorter hair styles were far too much work when I had them.
Missing all my Marbles I garden with a Walmart head wrap over my hair for just that reason!!!! The lazy bun fixer is two jaw clips. Jjj longhair shows how they can be used to secure hair really fast.
Col Jackson only if they follow the older strictures and are married. I think that the “reform Jewish” tends not to cover but I’m not the best at identifying the different groups. Theoretically married women are supposed to cover but depending on the group, wigs, hair dye, or a short hairstyle suffice. Something like Catholic women were supposed to be covered in church, the guidelines have been relaxed or entirely removed with the changing times
Thank you @AzureDaydreams I have a lot of long hair like yours. The folding of your hair, fastened with those barrettes really works so well to flatten and contain your hair. Clever! Thank you.
Thank you Monica Rose. I was just discussing amish and mennonite dressing codes with my employer tonight. It's odd I should cross paths with ur video the same night. May God continue to bless ur sweet, humble spirit. (((((( (( Praise Jesus )))))))
Hi....My relatives are Mennonites....but they never wore their hair that way . When they got old they went to a Mennonite home that cares for the elderly. I remember my Aunts both of them wore long hair .I use to watch them brushing it out .They braided their hair and put the braids up around their heads....like Germans use to do. They wore nets like you have to help keep their hair in place while they worked in their gardens. Their gardens were very important to them. They never wore make-up and I thought their hair was beautiful ....very thick , unlike mine. I learned as a kid to braid my long hair very fast.....even in the dark.... before morning . Oh , I almost forgot.....My relative always wore a scarf covering her head when she went out ...in the way old Russian women do... tied under their chin. She never learned to drive a car ....neither did I.
I love the way you do your hair up with the clips. This may be my go-to-hair-doo when I need my crazy, curly hair to stay up and tucked in on super hot days. Thank you...you're a lovely and warm person, I can tell...the world needs more people like you. 😊
I was raised Wesleyan Holiness, and went to a private Mennonite school. I stayed with my best friend up there quite a bit. Their sect also used the white mesh/molded type coverings that had strings in the back. The "umarrieds" were one string connected on both sides, the "marrieds" were two strings hanging on each side that tucked down into their dress. They won't connect to the internet though, they are very old fashioned.

So many cultures have women (and sometimes men) cover their heads as a show of modesty and/or reverence and/or immediate identification of being part of a certain group. The deliberate and persnickety specifications can be just as exacting in other groups/cultures/religions. More often than not, there is more emphasis on the women's head/hair covering than of the men's -- perhaps for obvious reasons of women often being regarded as somehow responsible for keeping men's 'urges' in check and/or refraining from being seen as somehow solicitous ... (let alone in monotheistic religions and their view of women as seductresses) - though there are quite a few groups that enforce strict clothing code on men, as well. Thank you for this peek into the minutia of what was part of your daily life and is still part of the lives of many.
Yes, men seem to blame those evil succubusses for their urges! It makes me get angry that men have controlled women for thousands of years! Now im wondering if it will go too far the other way? Why do peoplr have to try to control each other. It sucks. I lived at a hare krishna farm in Australia & young ex surfie guys, who had become krishna devotees were bossing good women around, telling them to lower their eyes when the men walked past & to sit away from the men & to eat after the men ate. Heck, women werent even allowed to sit in the ffont of a dual cab car. We girls were tossed into the back of the ute, like a couple of cows! Made me sick to the stomach. Some would be legitimate & live by holy principles but most of those men were ex pot smokers, ex drug addicts, gays who dislike women to start with, gun toting criminals, its people who cant fit in to normal life & are looking for an escape so then just find some organisation where they could get dole money under different names, have kids to several of the women & everyone shares the kids & get government money, then they would go out selling asian paintings, lying to businesses & get thousands upon thousands for some painting they paid $20 for. Im not making this stuff up. Im related to several of these men. Their children are then left with nothing when they become adults. I might add, very confused adults. There, ive had my gripe about hare krishnas, men & all people who scam. I dont believe the Memmonites would ever do anyrhing like that - they are honest, honourable people. But i still dont like the way religions downtrod women. I dislike it immensely! Ive stated a truth about australian krishnas. I dont know what theyre like overseas but here they dont care for the other people of our country & it justifies their dishonesty. Their original guru said they can be dishonest in business expecially to all the 'moochi' (dirty) meat eaters! Intolerable! Now il get bad mojo from telling it like it is, when im supposed to be all forgiving & love everyone arghhh!
@@twodogzdogue8710 I am sorry for your difficult experience. I don't know much about life in Hare Krishna farms, but I've heard from a couple of people beside you who'd lived in them, and they tell similar stories of exploitation and being shamed. Alas, this seems to be the case in many closed communities, especially those that preach their way as THE way. In reality, there are many ways to be a good human (and it may or may not involve God or Gods or embodiment thereof) -- and there are good people in all religions and religious sects. Some have a lesser view of some within their community (women, often, get the brunt of it) than others, but overall, my comment was less about the subjugation of women than it was about the similarities between many cultures in the way dress and manner of dress (and even the exactness of pleats in one's hair and the length of one's headdress) becomes signifying of belonging or group hierarchy. It is fascinating to me.
Former member here, I joined from the outside, stayed 5 years until I saw I was too strong a woman for them. Miss my friends, loved my covering, easy way to do my hair. No one ever showed me how to do my covering I had to figure it out! I used to set off metal detectors with all my hair pins! Nice video.
Yes, and I can't help wonder what the point of having such long, beautiful hair is if one has to bind it within an inch of it's life and then hide it under two pieces of black cloth?
Please read all the comments before agreeing with Rae Capital. Not one person has left a mean or negative comment. And please make more videos I love your video. You have such a good heart and it shines with the grace of God. BLESSINGS and Prayers to you and All.
I don't know where the confusion is. I'm here years later seeing quite a few unnecessary comments from 5 years ago, ranging from the blinded by their own baggage and getting the wrong end of the stick, to a few silly highhanded remarks to a couple that are not nice and really didn't need to be said. They stand out all the more because most are being kind, supportive and encouraging.people sharing their own memories and experiences and some genuine, respectful curiosity. Maybe TH-cam isn't showing you all the comments?
My extended family are Mennonite, but they were very reclusive from those of us who were not. It is so interesting to see and learn about Mennonite traditions.
Where I live we have Mennonites and Hutterites. The Mennonite women wear the tiny white caps trimmed with lace. Every single one I've seen is tall and slim no matter the age. They normally wear below the knee jean skirts and a modest top. They are not friendly in the shops will politely say thank you but never engage in conversation or say Hi. Normally they avoid eye contact with outsiders. On the other hand the Hutterite ladies will engage in conversation even laugh with outsiders. They wear bright purple pink blue flowered paisley homemade dresses store purchased European shoes different conservative styles brands with matching polka dot or striped head scarf. Several carry design handbags wear sunglasses shop in The Body Shop as an example. They also have cell phones; both men & women. The men boys also dress alike black pants white shirts homemade same style waist length black jackets white cowboy hats in summer black felt cowboy hats in winter or black fur hats. The Hutterites in other areas I've lived aren't as wealthy and the women girls do not wear the bright colours or expensive accessories. Nor do the men dress alike.
That wasn't necessary. You chose to take it as patronising. I have learned that many American ladies speak like this, especially the older ladies and they are just being kind and enthusiastic. I feel like that when I go back to my old meeting house, the Quaker ladies are also very sweet in a group. What's wrong with that?
I have such slick and thick hair that I 1) couldn't get my hair in those barrettes and 2) wouldn't be able to get it to stay even if I did manage to get it put up.
Wow, that is a lot of work! I am not good at fixing my hair. You have beautiful hair. I have always wondered how the ladies did their hair so now I know. Thank you for making this video.
That was very interesting and you managed to make it look relatively easy to do! I don't think I'd have the patience to do that to my hair every day ...I'd probably just buzz it all off instead hahaha.
Lol, i know what you mean! But the powers that be wouldnt allow the buzz cut. There is Gods presence in doing tedious work & i guess they would say its good for a womans impatient spirit to spend an hour every day putting hair up. My hair is curly & thick like a shaggy ol pony & this would be a catastrophe, trying to brush all my hair back, then pin it up. That little black covering would be as big as a rockmelon on the back of my head! Omg, that picture just freaked me out! Haha
@@twodogzdogue8710 My hair's quite long and thick and spending that much time hiding something so natural just seems a waste of time and kind of a vanity - it places so much importance on something that's really unimportant in the grand theme of things. I rather spend my time trying to live a healthy life, work, food, the family budget, friends, family and maybe getting to smell some flowers every once in a while....and yeah I'd have a hard time cramming all my hair under that little black covering as well.
@@milomilo55 hi dear one, i can really relate to the thick long hair! Speaking of thick long hair, my hair is all pinned in a roll kind of long bun because ive got to apend a hour getting all the knots out of it. Ive always had unruly hair but now im on the other side of menopause, its got so dry & whatever used to make it naturally shiny doesnt seem to be in my system to keep this mop shiny & it seems to get heaps more knots. In a perfect world, id be going to a hairdresser to get a couple inches cut off every 6 weeks for 2 years to try to look after it better but i actually find i cant TRUST hairdressers not to try & take the whole length off. They have this innate urge to cut off all length on hair, like its some fetish they have or theyre jealous or perhaps its as simple as getting money for hair? Who would know lol. But yes, iv been scrolling here on youtube when in reality, i should be detangling! SERIOUSLY detangling - this detangle is an extra big job as iv not done it for a while! That will teach me for being a no good slacker! Haha! Blessings to you, dear lady. Thankyou for replying to me x hugs 💐
You did watch the video? It was nine minutes long! Not an hour! That includes the introduction, her showing and explaining what she uses & going slowly to show the camera clearly what she's doing. If she keeps her hair like this during the day it won't tangle and break and can be brushed smoothed to coil up in the cap. My daughter has even longer hair which is thick and curly when loose.but she keeps it plaited at night and always up and covered when out yet even knowing what beautiful condition it's in, I'm still surprised how sleek and neat a bun she can make in a few minutes, standing, chatting with no mirror. She has a very full and busy life,of course! Looking after your hair isn't a full time occupation!
I've lived around Mennonite and Amish in Pennsylvania my whole life. I had never seen how they tucked all that hair away until now. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Curious as to if the black fabric means anything in particular? Would women, and young women I assume, wear different colors to show whether they were married? Thank you so much for this beautiful video.
I used to be a member of this church as well. All women and girls who are babtized members wear black headcoverings. The color is just tradition, not based on ones marital status🙂
My husband and I visited the Mennonite's in Canowindra NSW Australia. What a wonderful fellowship of beautiful families. They showed us great hospitality and friendship. I loved the Sunday service and the true committment to God and the Bible. The young mums were just awesome and lots of well behaved, well disciplined children. They are a missionary, outreach group and the men work very hard at their jobs in the local commuities. The women keep their houses scrupulously clean and tidy. We could learn such a lot from the Mennonite christians. Just wondering why you left your fellowship? Thank you for showing me how you do your hair. Peace and love.
Thank you for the tutorial! It looks beautiful... I am an outsider yet I love the Mennonite dress and headcovering. I sew all my own dresses from a Mennonite pattern for myself and my daughter and I recently started wearing a veil to church on Sunday... it's different than yours though, I have specially made ones that are round and oval shaped, I love them! Yes please talk about why you left the Mennonites, and can you also do a video about your dresses, did you sew them? Do you still wear them? Also does your black covering mean anything? Most of the ladies around me wear white, a few wear black, I know some areas one is married and one isn't, but some just choose to wear which color they want, thank you sorry for all the questions.

You're welcome!
I find learning new things especially hair styles very interesting. You have lovely hair. Neat and tidy is chic. I never knew what to do with those hair nets. Thank you for sharing
You're welcome 😊
I lived in Kansas many years ago, in Reno County, and had many Mennonite friends. I bought eggs and milk from them. Very nice people.
@@talibasnyder3032 If you hear someone talking down the holdeman mennnonites it's usually an ex mennonite that's bitter against the church.

Haha thanks! I get it from my mom!
In an insane world, this is a relaxing reprieve.
If all Mennonites are as sweet and gentle as this girl seems to be...they must be doing something right. Thank you for the lovely video my dear.
Yes--a captivating culture.
She's not Mennonite anymore
Neat. I always assumed it was just a bun with a covering.
Thanks, I love learning about different cultures. You have beautiful hair.
Thank you for sharing your video with us. Your way of putting your hair up is lovely.
Thank you for sharing this with us. You are such a beautiful young lady.
Thank you! I also have long hair. This is a good way to get it out of the way on a busy day working in the garden. And learning little details about other cultures like this is actually a good insight.
You have beautiful hair. Thank you for showing this.
Your voice is very relaxing and so is your music. Very lovely.
Thank you for the video :) Always interested in learning about people. Amazing how all that beautiful hair fits in the covering. Enjoyed watching .
Very pretty. I loved the background music. Its so relaxing. God bless you.🙏🏼
Fair Play if that’s the objective, Monica Rose has failed, because she and this video, are beautiful.

Good for you!
Thank you. Very nice music in the background and I love the embroidery on your denim shirt (or dress, not sure).

God Bless you beautiful young woman.
Please do more on both simple customs, your own journey, things people may not know about how Mennonite women live vs. how you live now. Wonderful video.
Your hair is gorgeous. What a process to go through every. single. day.
@@missingallmymarbles7670 hi. Arent jewish women supposed to cover their hair? Sory 4 my ignorance! Thankyou.
Jaw clips, one on either side of a bun, holds better and is faster.
So glad I found you here! Thank you for answering all those questions, I learned a lot. God bless you! 💕💕💕
Thank you @AzureDaydreams
I have a lot of long hair like yours. The folding of your hair, fastened with those barrettes really works so well to flatten and contain your hair. Clever! Thank you.

Your hair is beautiful.
Thank you everyone for your lovely comments! I appreciate your interest and I plan to make more videos in the next several weeks!
Where can a person find a pattern for that style of headcovering?
I love the way you do your hair up with the clips. This may be my go-to-hair-doo when I need my crazy, curly hair to stay up and tucked in on super hot days. Thank you...you're a lovely and warm person, I can tell...the world needs more people like you. 😊

I always wondered why the ladies put straight pins in their caps. Very interesting!! Thank you for the explanation!
That was sweet and lovely and I enjoyed watching.
Very neat and modest, as catholic growing up, we wore a triangle lace vail, especially around easter
But we only had to cover our heads during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
Would like to see more of your videos!
I had no idea there were rules to the structure of How the penning of the hair was to be. Very interesting to know. Thank you for sharing.
I grew up around Mennonite my mom being Pennsylvania Dutch. I have never seen the black prayer caps just the white ones.

Wow! Thank you! I had no idea so much was involved. That's alot of work.

I don't know where the confusion is.
I visited a Mennonite Church in Indiana. They were so sweet, and I just loved them all.
Where at in Indiana?
"They were sweet, and I just loved them all." How patronizing, like petting little puppies isn't it?
That wasn't necessary. You chose to take it as patronising. I have learned that many American ladies speak like this, especially the older ladies and they are just being kind and enthusiastic. I feel like that when I go back to my old meeting house, the Quaker ladies are also very sweet in a group. What's wrong with that?

Lol!
