Great video Geo! Would you be interested in doing another cartridge vs safety razor showdown but with multiple passes instead of one? I'm interested to see if the cartridge can get any smoother than a safety razor on the second or third pass since it's more likely to shave below the skin level.
Thank you not only for a great video but for teaching an old dog a new trick…I’m 59 years old and have been shaving daily with multi blade razors for the last 40 some odd years…after watching your videos I was inspired to try shaving with a safety razor, so I purchased the Merkur 34c, a perfecto boar brush and a Brummel marble mixing bowl. I have been using this set up for the past week using the technique you describe in your videos…My only regret is that it took me 40 plus years to learn how enjoyable it is to shave with a safety razor…Not only is there a cost savings but I feel I have much more control over my shave and the result is a much cleaner, closer shave…I now wake up each morning looking forward to my new shaving ritual….thanks to your guidance….: )
Bic works great with my R89 but only for two good shaves. Still i use them from time to time just because they are made in Greece. Oh, and i have a dream . A Shave Nation store in the center of Athens 😀
Great video as always, geo! I've not tried BiC Astors, I might have to try them out some day. I cut the tip of my left index while changing blades this morning (promptly sterlised and covered with a band-aid), which meant shaving today was a little awkward. I don't let mistakes like that stop me from enjoying shaving, though, since I find the only time I get a bad shave is when I'm in a bad mood.
I shaved with a Astor DE razor blade for the first time, today. I'm very satisfied with the results. Thanks for the review. I found a razor blade that is a bit smoother than my Bic Chromium Platinum razor blades. I'm very happy with the quick shipping from Shave Nation, too. Thank you, Mr. Geo.
Hello Geo! I find this blade to be very sharp but harsh on the first shave. After that they retain their sharpness for many shaves. I do the first shave in a razor of negative exposure and problem is solved!
You can strop on leather when is brand new or you can pass the edge of the blade in a cork 3 to 4 times and your first shave it will be smooth like butter.
Good morning George. Thanks for the advise. I have a mamba clone that can tame every harsh blade on the first shave. Astor is like a laser beam as someone has said😆 @@GeorgeLiodakis
Another great video, Mr. Geo! Proraso Green is my favorite for shaving cream. Bic DE Chromium Platinum razor blades are my favorite, also. You're the Godfather of shaving!
Thanks for the video! The Proraso green splash is really nice and refreshing. I bought some recently to try it and I like it a lot. My wife does too, so it’s a 👍 from here. I use BIC blades but haven’t tried the Astor, so cheers for the review. They could be a good pairing for my R89.
Great video Geo from an old south sider.... My 34G out of about a dozen razors I feel is the best all around razor I own.... Beautiful shaver...Just used it yesterday with a Voskhod and it was terrific as usual... Love Proraso menthol splash, been using it for years and the other one is great too.... Just placed a small order for some Omega shave cream and an alum stick and an old favorite, Aqua Velva at your site and an excellent site it is...! 5 Stars buddy...GG...in IN
I don't know but never liked this blade. Probably when I used it many years ago in Greece it wasn't that sharp. They changed perhaps it's sharpness, because I remembered it as a blast blade.
@@kostasintzes9958 I like the Mühle blades so well, that I bought a pack of 200. Also the Dovo blades are another good one. Probably made in the same factory.
I don’t know why so many recommend the Merkur 34C. It’s no better than the cheaper Gillette C King razor. It’s very mild to the point of disappointment.

Hey Geo I wished I bought some Tobs Sandalwood sooner, great scent. I know you use it alot. Your videos got me into wet shaving. How are the astor blades compared to say Astras? I'm looking for good non-russian blades. I haven't tried BIC blades yet. Rumor has it the blade production plant in St.Petersburg Russia. I just bought a supply of some of my favorite Russian blades just in case.
Great video as always, Geo! You make shaving look so easy I kind of envy you. My shaves have been bloody for quite a while. My beard lays so flat and is so tough that it is indeed quite hard to get a good shave even though I use a pretty aggressive razor - the fatip open comb slant with an astra super platinum in it. First pass with the grain goes well, but then going across and especially against is quite hard - the blade just can't handle my beard. So far the best shaving method I have found for me is to use the Philips Oneblade as the first pass against the grain (that thing you reviewed quite a while ago) and then using the safety razor for a one pass ATG cleanup. Do you think a feather blade or any other sharper blade could possibly help with that? Or is it just my beard that is hard to shave... Thanks in advance!
Would recommend using a boar brush like the Omega that is used in this video. It's cheap and cost effective. Be sure to break it in using reddit tips. The next thing is to make sure you apply shaving soap/cream against the grain to lift up the hairs and prime them for shaving. The boar brush is stiff and will also do a great job at lifting those hairs. You can try a sharper blade but what also works is softening the hair with a shower before shaving or shaving after the sauna if you shave at the gym.

I had the same troubles with my 34C and that was 20 years ago. I went through a long time of no shaving and somehow lost my 34C. Now I am moving towards all steel or brass razors instead of the zinc alloy ones, they seem to be made to tighter tolerances than the zinc ones.

Hey Geo, would you consider showing some other soaps like Artisan soaps by the likes of Noble Otter, A&E, PAA, Stirling soaps etc?
