This video is fantastic Rebecca thank you. I want to knit up some cotton t shirts for summer and this video stepped me through the process. Cheers from Melbourne, Oz.
Thank you so much! This didn't turn out like I expected, but this is now something I return to over and over and over again. I love how watercolor this is!
Came out gr8. I dislike orange with black but I won't limit myself with that idea anymore, because of how it all came together. Wonder what would happen with some acid mordant on the ones with wool content?
I likely have an amazon link in the video description, but you can also find it at many big box retailers. I will usually wait for a 40% or 50% off coupon before I buy some. I think the best deal are usually the $19.99 kits that have 5 prefilled bottles with powder and 5 refill packets. (This is a slightly better deal than the 3 packet refill kits of individual colors.)
ChemKnits Tutorials thanks so much! I keep an eye on Amazon but never thought to check out local stores. I despise shopping at the actual Wal-Mart store as it's too overwhelming for my anxiety.
I wonder what would’ve happened if you would’ve let the yarn sit in the dye for longer. Would all of the colors mix and become muddy? I can’t choose which is my favorite technique that you use but this is a strong competitor
They might keep spreading a bit. I think it depends on how much water is left in your yarn when you sprinkle the dyes on top of them. Tie dye doesn't strike very fast.
YAY! I'm so glad that I could help you. This technique is absolutely one of my favorites now. I just LOVE LOVE the way the colors layered together and spread out.
I have! I hope to do a more traditional self striping technique at some point, but I recently released a video where I did some self striping yarn in a less conventional manner in DPW #68 th-cam.com/video/HTWLJ7Tw_pM/w-d-xo.html
Those yarns are amazing. I'm sitting here with yarn and everything ready to start dying my skein of yarn and can't figure out what to do, I'm so scared!!!
Oh no! Don't be scared. Think about it as a fun adventure. If you go in with the mindset "I wonder what will happen if I do XYZ" then you'll usually end up delighted. :)
I did not use any vinegar at all. You don't typically use vinegar when dyeing cotton yarns (they need more basic conditions.) I did an experiment where I presoaked the yarn in vinegar and without vinegar to see if it would make a difference on wool and cotton yarns with the tie dye kit and I saw no difference. th-cam.com/video/zukYfXUH5MU/w-d-xo.html I think that if you had the yarn drier then you might get some tighter speckling. I haven't tried speckling with Rit powder dyes yet. I think the nature of some of these dyes is that they react a bit slower, which means that they will spread out a bit. Acid dyes (which only work on wools) strike super quickly so it is easy to get small speckles with the.
I have! I really like working with a pressurized spray bottle like the misto. This live stream features a number of different spraying options: th-cam.com/video/CWRM23-q2MM/w-d-xo.html
I have one of those in the video, too! I didn't like the lack of control with the big bottle from home depot. I preferred the spray pens and the misto for a more even air brush type look. Speaking of airbrush... I want to get a food one someday. ;)
ChemKnits Tutorials Your videos have inspired me to dye the yarn for a blanket i want to make for one of my college art intructors.... I plan on doing a light/dark value colored gradient... I'm really hoping to get my first job soon so i can start....
WOOHOO! Are you in the ChemKnits Lab facebook group? facebook.com/groups/ChemKnitsLab/ There are a lot of people just starting out and more experienced dyers in there, too. Lots of people to help answer questions and troubleshoot.
All of the yarn featured in this video is currently available in the ChemKnits Creations Etsy store! chemknitscreations.etsy.com
The cotton boucle has sold, but the other 3 are still available!

You are so welcome!
I love how happy you sound when starting videos 💙
Awe, thank you! I get really excited about some of these projects sometimes. (Well, almost all the time, lol!)
I would like to see some of these wonderful dyed yarns knitted up. 👍🏻I love the videos and different ideas.
I have a video in the pipeline that shows the finished garment along with the dyeing. :D (Finally!)
All I could think of during this video was fireworks! I love your enthusiasm, keep it up Rebecca. xxJane

I’m really enjoying yr videos. I have ordered all the items I need to start dyeing myself 😀😀 xxx
Ih my God I am hooked in your channel. I absolutely loved this particular colorway results. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Thank you so much, Liz!
This is absolutely awesome, Rebecca!
Thank you so much, Vicki!
From a distance it looks like a xmas colorway. It’s so pretty 👏👏😁
I see that now!
I think I need to order some dry dye too. Thankyou for doing this Rabecca, it's fun to watch.😊💞
Yay!
Very pretty! September Apples! I just checked out the tie dye kits on you amazon link and they have a Mermaid colored one!!!!! How exciting!!!!
I wanted to get the mermaid one so badly with a Michael's coupon but they ran out. :( There is a unicorn one now, too.
Those came out really nice. Thank you for your videos
You're very welcome! I love love love this technique and plan to play with it a lot more in the future.
Nice work mam ♥

Love how these turned out! I need to order some tulip tie dye 😍

Michaels and Joanns frequently have good coupons and you can buy online and pick up in store. :)

Did you use vinegar at all in this process? Why/why not? I’m curious to know if the yarn would have speckled more if there was a strong mordant used?

Is the dye organic too?
No. Tie dyes aren't organic.
the colors and patterns remind me of a koi fish (at least at the beginning)
YES!
Have you tried with a spray bottle?

I was thinking more with a spray bottle more like windex. :)

Speaking of airbrush... I want to get a food one someday. ;)
Thank you!!!
have you ever tried dyeing wool/cotton blend yarns?
Hmmm... I'm honestly not 100% sure. I've definitely done wool/viscose from bamboo but I'm not sure about wool and cotton.
I'm watching this after a makeup review and i'm just sitting here "like can you dye yarn with eyeshadow?"
You know, my mom gave me some old makeup that she doesn't use anymore for just this kind of thought. ;) I haven't tried it yet, though.
ChemKnits Tutorials It was just a thought i had...i would be interested in watching a video about...
Maybe this is going to have to come a little up my list. ;)
