Though I don't know your skills, resources, and finances nor even how much of endeavor such a task would be on that engine. Some engines never die, others won't last a week.
Failing lifters….. most likely due to the pitch black, thin as water oil its been running and most likely barely getting enough oil pressure to keep it from seizing up.

The OEM calls them lifters do not be stubborn. Yea they technically may be tappets or whatever but its not that serious.
