Wow! A time capsule. I remember watching this on TV. I recorded it with a cassette player, microphone balanced near the speaker on the TV. I played it endlessly after. So much so that after 43 years I sang almost every word to every song when watching this.
I’d rather see him than Elton John. He’s more REAL. My wife and I SAW ELTON JOHN IN CONCERT IN 1977, HE STUNK. Sounded like a bunch of monkeys beating on a garbage can😡FUK ELTON JOHN.
The night this aired on TV in England, I had settled in with my grandparents, in their bungalow in Great Clacton, to watch what we thought was a night of Gilbert & Sullivan in Concet .... yes, we all misread the TV Times. So glad we watched it though. It made a lasting impression on me. Still a fan after all these i years.
This wonderful little guy,was a huge part in dragging me through my horrible childhood .his story's and melodies lifted me above the sadness ..thank you.
Superb talent how lucky were we growing up with this man...Has to be one of the best singer/songwriters this country has ever seen still going strong n long may it continue..take a bow GOS you absolutely musical legend 👍👏👏👏😊
One of my favorite albums, Himself, from 1971. I had not only the American release but the British release. I also bought the songbook for Himself and I still have it. Sadly, his next album wasn't nearly as good. Gone were the really meaningful songs with those great lyrics. I can't help but think his manager, Gordon Mills, told him to write love songs. Gilbert later went on to sue Mills. Their contract said part of all the money he made was to go to his mother, part was to go to him for a little spending money, and the rest was to be put in savings. Mills decided to keep most of the money himself and got caught. Gilbert won a settlement of ~$15 million pounds. I have to admit I liked his song Clair because it's based upon a true story about Gilbert babysitting Mills' daughter Clair. Also, in case you don't know it, Raymond O'Sullivan was taught to play drums and piano by his best schoolboy chum Rick Davies. Gilbert played drums in Rick's band, Rick's Blues Boys. After the graduated the went their own ways - Ray changing his name to Gilbert and Rick Davies forming a rock group named Supertramp.
I recognize most of the titles in an LP of his that I listened to a looooong time ago. Hours over hours, days over days. Such a rich palette of harmonies and emotions.... why can't today's pop musicians manage to raise above the trite, desolate dung coming out of radios and tv's all the time?
It’s looks and sex over musical substance now, it started going downhill around 1986-7 when Stock Aitken and waterman came on the scene with every song they put out all sounding the same and jive bunny didn’t help either. 😂
Hard. Work. Fufills. U. Thank you so much for your help. Work. Your. Way. Up. To. Top. It won’t take. Long. Try try. Try again. Determination. Works. 4. U. Lots of. Luck and thank you 🙏
I've listened to a wide variety of music, but in the end, I like music like the Carpenters, the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. I think it's fair to say that they've shaped who I am. That's why I love the atmosphere of Gilbert O'Sullivan. I want to be surrounded by this kind of music in my daily life.
Excellent, I have never heard of anyone quite like him and I never will.. I was a baby when he played this concert and never heard of him when I was older.. But, his music is a link to my past I will never forget..
Gilbert came along just as the groups scene was passing it was the songwriters time yeah he was huge every song Written by him was outstanding its 2023 and the songs have travelled through time to be heard and enjoyed again And again by young and old yeah that's why he's a real Superstar 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Lovely memories ! My Dad had a couple of 8-track cassettes of Gilbert O’Sullivan in the car and we listened to them relentlessly! All of these tracks were on them ❤
Himself was my first album, Nothing Rhymed my first single. I owe this man quite a bit. Thanks for posting this music document. What a voice.
Me too, both, 13 years old then, dad paid for them, bless him. Wonderful songs.
Me too , I was 16 and soooooo in love ❤❤❤

Fun fact: Gilbert was bigger than Elton John in 1971/1972, at least in the UK and Holland😍
I agree totally!! . Gilbert voice is hypnotic !🤩🎼. I am big fan of Gilbert from Chile 🇨🇱

I didn't know about his manager? Wow, what a piece of work. Love Gilbert O'Sullivan.
The first album is a work of sheer pop genius, especially the lyrics.
Agreed, Southpaw was also an underrated album too

Check out Ren; an incredible talent. Not quite the same as Gilbert but covers a wide range of genres.
I remember the first time I heard this
I am a young fan of Gilbert O'Sullivan and I honestly wish I was alive when he was performing at shows like these. I would kill to see him in concert!
I’m 76 and just only now learning and listening to Gilbert O’Sullivan’s music. He is a great song writer and talent.
WOW!!! How did you live through the 1970's and NOT know of Ray O'Sullivan? (Gilbert) That's astonishing to me!
I can still song along to all his big hits. A brilliant songwriter. My fav, alone again.... naturaly😊🤚🏼
HOW COULD SOMEBODY SO YOUNG WRITE SOMETHING SO GREAT

Jeez 'Nothing gained, nothing stillborn or lost', they must be the saddest lyrics that i have ever heard.
I have watched this concert several times now and it's just terrific! SO HAPPY someone filmed it AND put it out for all to see!
Marvellous TV concert by the great Gilbert OSullivan!

Brilliant
He's 25 here, so he had those hits already at that age..
Jag är född på Paulusdagen!
Pity he didn't play "independent air"..himself was his greatest album in my humble onion..
Its a marvellous album!
when all the girls say pardon.....well that art seems to have vanished
Not quite.. I say it and get weird looks.. Crazy.. 😊
tiene la voz muy parecida a Paul McCartney, claramente hay una influencia ahí en la manera de cantar.
I thought he sounded more like John Lennon, that nasal quality.
'Himself' and 'Back To Front' are both superb albums. I still know every word! Great orchestrations too.
