Without the battery on the remote can I start the car with the key without the battery?

Mine wouldn’t run properly without a new key fob battery. It struggled to start then wouldn’t rev then stalled and wouldn’t start again. I thought it was the immobiliser kicking in without its matching key working properly. But when I changed the key battery the car started first time and ran smoothly instantly and ever since.
